30. Kaylani

Chapter 30

Kaylani

T he machines beep frantically and Bex's body convulses again, foam spilling from her mouth. The sight is horrifying, it’s something out of my worst nightmares.

"No!" I scream, my voice raw with desperation. "Stay with me. Stay with me."

"Fight Bex. Fight. Please. Please. Please!"

Hux places a reassuring hand on my shoulder, his grip firm yet gentle. It does little to soothe the guilt and despair crashing through me. A tidal wave of guilt.

If Bex doesn't make it, I'll never forgive myself. I'll never forgive Sabrina.

"Don't leave me. I need you. We all need you," I beg again, my voice barely a whisper.

The room feels suffocating, the air thick with tension and fear. I can hear the frantic whispers of the nurses, the urgent commands from Sabrina, but it's all a blur. My world has narrowed down to Bex, her pale face, her cold hand in mine.

"I love you, Bex," I whisper, my voice breaking.

I need her.

Minutes stretch on into eternity as Sabrina and the team work tirelessly. The convulsions slow, but Bex's condition remains critical. The room's atmosphere is thick with tension, every beep of the monitor like a ticking clock.

Finally, Sabrina steps back, her face drawn with exhaustion. "We've done all we can for now. I'm so sorry, Kay. For everything."

I can't respond, the betrayal still too raw. Instead, I focus on Bex, willing her to survive. My thoughts are spiraling out of control, but everything feels like it's happening in slow motion. I can't afford to fall apart now, not when Bex needs me.

The heart monitor over Bex's head suddenly flat lines, and my eyes shoot down to her form, my knees going weak.

Creed catches me before I hit the floor.

Hospital staff bustle around the room, and Sabrina's voice cuts through the chaos. "Get her out of here," she demands.

"No!" I scream, refusing to leave her side. I fight against whoever is holding me back, desperate to be with her.

"Charge to two hundred," Sabrina commands.

The nurses step back, "Clear!" they say in unison, before Sabrina administers a shock. The machine beeps once, twice, and then flatlines again. Tears blur my vision, but I angrily swipe them away.

"Fight, Bex, please!" I beg through big, heaving sobs. "Fight damn it!"

The flatline echoes in the now-silent room.

"I'm so sorry, Kay," Sabrina whispers.

"No!" I refuse to accept defeat. "Charge it again!" I demand, but the hospital staff look at me with nothing but sympathy.

"Did you not hear me? Charge it again!" I shout, frustration boiling over.

"Fine," I snap when nobody moves. "I'll do it myself." I grab the paddles roughly from Sabrina's grasp, charging them myself.

"Clear!" I say, hitting her chest. My entire body vibrates as if it were my own heart being shocked.

"Please," I beg repeatedly.

"Again!"

She continues to flatline.

"Clear!" I say again, and hit her with the paddles one more time. "Come on, Rebecca. Come on, please!"

"Kitten," Hux says, placing a hand on my shoulder. "I’m sorry."

But I can't stop staring at the screen, silently begging for any sign of life. I refuse to believe that she's gone. The steady beep of the flatline pierces the air and I'm drowning, the sound filling my head, making it impossible to think or feel anything else. Hux's hand on my shoulder is the only thing anchoring me to reality.

"No," I whisper, my voice barely audible. "This can't be happening."

Sabrina steps forward, her face etched with pain and exhaustion. "Kay, we have to let her go," she says softly, but I shake my head vehemently, refusing to accept her words.

"How could you?" I sob, turning to Sabrina. "She was your daughter. Your flesh and blood!" I cry out, my voice breaking with fury.

Sabrina flinches at my words, tears welling up in her eyes, and I feel nothing but rage.

"I know," she whispers, her voice barely audible. "But I was desperate. I thought I was protecting her. If I could take it all back I would."

I shake my head in disgust. "There's no going back now, no undoing the damage that you've done."

"She needed you," Hux interjects, his tone a mixture of anger and disappointment. "And you failed her."

Sabrina recoils at his accusation, her shoulders slumping in defeat. The realization of what she's done hitting her like a freight train. "I'm sorry," she whispers, her voice barely above a whisper. "I'm so sorry."

But her apology falls on deaf ears. There's nothing she can say or do to make this right, to undo the pain and suffering she's caused.

"You've betrayed us all," Hux growls, his voice laced with anger. "And for what? Money? Power?"

Sabrina flinches at his accusation, but she doesn't deny it. Instead, she bows her head in shame, unable to meet our gaze.

"It's over, Sabrina," I say, my voice cold and hollow. "There's nothing left for you here. Leave. I can't stand to look at you."

The words hang heavy in the air, a final decree marking the end of our once-close bond. Sabrina hesitates for a moment, her eyes filled with a mixture of remorse and resignation.

With those words, I turn away from her, unable to bear the sight of her any longer. She's taken too much from us already, and I won't let her hurt us anymore.

As Sabrina slinks away, her footsteps echoing through the silent hospital corridor, I feel as if my world is shattering into a thousand jagged pieces. Losing Bex like this changes something inside me, something irreparable. But amidst the pain and despair, a flicker of determination takes hold.

I won't rest until justice is served. I swear, with every breath in my body, that I will make those responsible for her death pay dearly for their crimes.

Hux pulls me into his arms, he embraces me and I cling to him, my body shaking with sobs. The room feels like it's closing in on me, the steady beep of the flatline a cruel reminder of our reality. I glance at Bex, lying so still, and a fresh wave of grief crashes over me.

"I'm sorry," I whisper, my voice breaking. "I'm so sorry."

But she's gone. And with her, a piece of me dies too.

Vaughn, Creed and Hux surround us. My pack. Their presence is a silent show of solidarity. But amidst the grief and despair, a fiery determination takes hold of me.

"This is knot over ," I growl. The words hang heavy in the air, a solemn vow forged from the depths of my anguish.

Bex's death will not be in vain. I'll make sure of it.

"They'll all pay for this Bex. I swear it."

I may have lost my best friend, but I refuse to let her death be in vain. She deserves justice, and by the devil himself, I will see it done.

I vow to hunt down those responsible and make them pay for what they've done. I vow to tear down the Breeder facility, brick by fucking brick if I have to, until not a single stone is left standing.

I look at my pack, a sense of calm rushing over me. Together, we'll bring those responsible to their knees. And together, we'll ensure that no one else suffers the same fate she did. For Bex, for my pack, for everyone who has ever been wronged by those in power—I will not rest until justice is served.

This is knot over. Not by a long shot.

KNOT THE END
