Chapter Fifteen
Chapter Fifteen
Dare
The address Adrienne gave us leads to an old, converted warehouse at the edge of downtown Chicago. The kind of place you don’t find unless you’re looking—dimly lit alleys, industrial buildings, and silence thick enough to drown in.
Fox parks our SUV along the curb, shutting off the headlights before leaning back in his seat.
He’s tense, watching the building like he expects it to explode.
Jex checks his weapon once, sliding it securely back into its holster beneath his jacket.
Romano cleared Adrienne, but we’ve learned caution the hard way.
Violet sits quietly between me and Fox, her small hand curled tightly around mine, thumb brushing softly over my knuckles.
Her presence grounds me, keeping the cold fury simmering in my veins from overtaking reason.
I glance at her, silently reassuring myself she’s okay.
She meets my gaze, eyes steady, silently telling me she trusts us. Trust me.
“Everyone ready?” Fox murmurs, scanning the empty street again.
I squeeze Violet’s hand gently before releasing her. “Let’s go.”
As we step out of the vehicle, the air is cool and damp, moving silently across the cracked pavement toward the side door Adrienne’s card indicated.
Fox knocks sharply, twice— precisely as instructed.
A moment later, the heavy steel door slides open, revealing Adrienne Hart, dressed in dark, tactical attire, her expression alert but composed.
“Inside,” she says simply, stepping back.
We file in quickly, senses sharp as Adrienne slides the door shut behind us with a heavy clang.
The inside is sparse but clearly designed for discretion.
A large metal table sits in the center beneath harsh fluorescent lights, surrounded by several chairs.
Stacks of paper and files are laid out neatly, obviously prepared ahead of our arrival.
Adrienne turns to face us, calm but wary, eyes scanning the four of us slowly. Her gaze settles last on Violet, expression softening just slightly, something protective flickering behind her eyes before she meets Fox’s stare again.
“Show me what you have,” Adrienne says, voice crisp, straightforward. “And then I’ll tell you what I can do.”
Fox pulls a small thumb drive from his pocket and hands it to her without a word. “Bank statements, purchase records, internal comms, and a full list of high-level personnel involved.”
Adrienne plugs the drive into a secure laptop, her fingers flying over the keyboard as the screen floods with incriminating evidence. Her jaw tightens incrementally as she reads, eyes blazing with fury and determination.
“I’ve suspected something like this,” she says quietly after several tense minutes, finally looking up again. “But I didn’t know how deep it went. You realize the danger you’ve put yourselves in just bringing this to me?”
“We were already in danger,” I respond evenly, watching her closely. “We’re here because it’s time to end it.”
Her gaze sharpens, assessing me with newfound respect.
She nods, pulling in a slow breath. “I have a trusted network—other alphas, betas, even a few omegas—in positions to make things move politically and publicly. But this,” she gestures to the screen, “this is dangerous. People will die for this kind of information.”
“People have already died,” Violet speaks up firmly, her voice strong despite the tension in the room. “They’ve been killing us slowly for years. It’s time someone fought back.”
Adrienne looks at Violet, a spark of admiration flaring in her eyes. “Then we fight. Together.”
Fox steps forward slightly. “How soon can you start making moves?”
Adrienne’s mouth quirks into a fierce, determined smile. “Immediately. But we’ll have to move quietly. I assume you’re prepared to do what’s necessary?”
“More than ready,” Jex answers instantly, calm and deadly certain. “We’ll take care of anything on the ground. You get this information to the right people.”
Adrienne nods, the weight of the decision clear in her eyes. “Then consider it done.”
She stands, extending a hand toward Fox first. He shakes it firmly. She moves down the line, meeting Jex’s eyes, then Violet’s, before stopping in front of me. I grasp her hand steadily, recognizing the resolve in her grip.
“You’re doing the right thing,” she says quietly, holding my gaze.
“We’re doing the only thing,” I answer calmly, feeling the certainty of Violet’s presence behind me. “And we’re going to finish it.”
Adrienne smiles briefly, a flash of respect and understanding passing between us.
“Good,” she says softly, releasing my hand. “Because this war’s just getting started.”

July 15th
9:42 P.M
The oppressive night presses down on us, humidity thickening with the promise of violence.
Fox crouches low at my side, eyes locked onto the heavily fortified facility.
I can feel his tension, coiled tight like a spring.
Beside him, Dare’s presence is a steadying force, cold fury emanating from him like a tangible thing.
Romano’s voice buzzes quietly in my ear over the comms, low and methodical. “Server room’s in the east wing. Alarms are wired through the control room—cut them fast, or expect trouble.”
“Copy,” Fox answers quietly, checking his weapon one last time.
Dare gives a sharp nod, looking back briefly to check on Violet. She’s pressed tight between Fallon and Kingston, her small frame wired with anticipation. Her blue eyes gleam fiercely beneath her dark curls. She catches my gaze, nodding once—resolute, brave, and utterly unafraid.
Kingston speaks calmly from the back of the formation, steady and commanding. “Fallon, Voss—you’re with Violet and me. We’ll cover your extraction point. Fox, Jex, Dare—go in hot, get the intel. Romano and Jace have perimeter control.”
We all acknowledge silently, splitting smoothly into our teams. Fallon squeezes Violet’s shoulder firmly, whispering something encouraging in her ear. Voss shifts restlessly, eyes glinting in anticipation of violence.
Fox moves first, Dare and I flanking him. We cut swiftly through the shadows, heartbeats hammering in steady rhythm. Dare disables the outer cameras with an EMP burst; darkness swallows the compound’s rear perimeter instantly.
We slip through the fence like ghosts, moving quietly, relentlessly toward the looming gray concrete structure. A sudden flash from the right signals that Romano and Jace have engaged perimeter guards silently, dropping them before they can sound any alarm.
Inside is sterile white hallways lit too harshly, a maze of danger and deception. Fox’s fist goes up, signaling silence. We hold position, waiting as footsteps pass, our breathing controlled but sharp.
“Server room ahead,” Fox murmurs. “Romano, guide us.”
“Straight ahead, then left,” Romano instructs calmly. “I’m tracking guard movement—move now.”
We surge forward, quick and precise. Fox silently takes down a guard ahead of us, catching the limp body before it hits the ground. Dare nods approvingly, gaze sharp and watchful as we push onward.
We enter the server room smoothly, Romano’s voice steady. “Plug it in. Get it done fast.”
Fox attaches the drive, and the data transfer begins, agonizingly slow. Each second stretches painfully.
A sudden sharp curse from Romano sends adrenaline spiking down my spine. “Shit! Alarms triggered—guards incoming!”
Red lights flare, blinding and pulsing violently. Fox rips the drive free just as the door crashes open. Gunfire erupts, deafening in the enclosed space. We dive for cover, returning fire swiftly. A bullet grazes my shoulder, searing pain briefly acknowledged then ruthlessly ignored.
“Jex! Fox!” Dare bellows, laying down suppressing fire, sharp and brutal. “Move now!”
We retreat swiftly, firing as we sprint down the corridor toward the exit. My comm crackles, Kingston’s voice cutting sharply through chaos. “We’ve got company outside! Voss and Fallon holding perimeter—move your asses!”
We burst into the open air, immediately diving for cover as bullets ricochet off concrete. Kingston and Fallon provide cover fire, faces grim and determined. Violet is crouched beside Voss, eyes blazing fiercely as she reloads her weapon with practiced ease.
“Jace, extraction point now!” Kingston barks urgently. “We’re boxed in!”
“Already on it,” Jace snaps back, voice tight with tension. “Thirty seconds, hold tight!”
The fight grows deafening, sharp pops of gunfire mixing with adrenaline-soaked curses. Fallon snarls beside Kingston, firing in precise bursts, her body poised and lethal.
Violet pivots suddenly, eyes widening. “On your left!”
I spin sharply, dropping another enemy who’d nearly flanked us. Violet nods once, eyes bright and unafraid despite the chaos.
A vehicle roars up behind us—Jace, sleek black SUV skidding sideways, door flung open urgently. “Get in!”
We sprint for the SUV, bullets snapping past us. I push Violet ahead of me, protective instinct flaring fiercely as Dare and Fox cover our backs. Fallon slides inside, pulling Violet with her; Voss shoves in after them, grunting sharply as a bullet grazes his leg.
We tumble in quickly, hearts hammering, ears ringing. Romano leaps into the front, fingers flying over his laptop as Jace punches the gas, tires squealing. The facility fades rapidly behind us, sirens wailing into the darkening distance.
“You got the data?” Kingston demands harshly, breathing ragged.
“Got it,” Fox confirms, voice gritty with adrenaline. “Everything.”
A tense silence follows, punctuated only by our harsh breathing.
Violet’s hand curls tightly around mine, fingers trembling slightly from adrenaline but fierce and resolute. I glance at her, absorbing the quiet bravery etched deeply into her features.
“We did it,” she breathes softly, eyes glowing. “We’re gonna take them down.”
