Chapter 16
Adler
My poor kitten must feel terrible. I jumped out of the tub and called Dylan, the youngest man in my unit. He ran to the store and brought me everything Violet could need.
Dylan brought her tampons, pads, underwear, some medicine, and a heaping pile of snacks.
When I snuck back into the bathroom to check on Violet, she was sound asleep, only being comforted by the steaming water and the bubbles of the soap.
I had helped her out, wrapped her up in a thick towel, and helped get her situated in some of the underwear Dylan had brought and a pad. “Go lay down in the living room, I'll join you shortly, okay?” I ask.
Violet nods and a confused look spreads across her face when I unhook her leash and take it from her. I don't comment, she just won't need it if she's not feeling well. “Go on.” I insist, patting her ass as she walks away from me.
Violet heads into the living room while I head into my office, I need to think of a plan to deal with Morse and this damn company experimenting on people.
They can't continue to operate in my town.
I'd prefer they didn't exist at all, but I doubt I can do anything about that, this feels like it's bigger than just a handful of sadistic scientists in a small town making unkillable mutants.
I spent the better part of the morning on a group call with most of my unit, discussing what we were going to do and how.
Sebastian is going to find the building they're operating from and try to find the layout of the place, Brice is going to try to find out who the scientists are, and Nico is going to run our company like all this isn't happening.
We have to be discreet about all of this, if Morse finds out or even suspects that something is happening it'll be a goddamn mess. At the very minimum, it will expose myself and my whole unit as what we are, at the most, it could cost all of us and the few mated women their lives.
Violet wanders into my office after a few hours, her arms tightly around her chest as if she's holding onto herself. “Hold on for a minute, Brice.” I insist. I sit the phone down and open my arms for her to join me, which she does.
She climbs up onto my lap and hugs onto me as soon as she's close enough. “Feeling okay, kitten?” I ask once my arms have banded around her.
She nods into my neck and lays what might be the coldest hands I've ever felt on my arm. “Cold.” She mumbles against me.
I grab my phone with my free hand, still holding onto Violet with the other. “Let me call you back, just find out what you can about the scientists.” I say before hanging up and focusing on her.
“Come on, I'll get you covered up and turn the heat up a little more.” I promise her. I don't get hot or cold, so I have to use her cues to figure out how to set the thermostat, otherwise, I just keep it warm enough that the pipes won't freeze, and I can't see my breath.
Violet hops up off of my lap, letting me follow her back into the living room. She sits down on the floor on her dog bed and curls herself into as small of a ball as she can. “Why are you on the floor?” I ask.
She picks her head up, an adorable face full of confusion staring back at me. “I'm not allowed on the furniture without you.” She reminds me.
Shit. I forgot to tell her that I didn't expect her to follow that rule when she's not feeling well.
I pat the couch, shaking out a throw blanket while she climbs up. “I'm sorry, kitten, that's my fault. If you're not feeling well, I want you to be comfortable.” I insist.
Violet mumbles something about her little dog bed is fine, but I don't care. I tuck her into the blanket and lay a pillow under her head while she curls in on herself to warm up. “I'll turn the heat up and we can sit here for a while, okay?” I ask.
Most of our afternoon is spent with Violet resting or flipping through the channels on the TV. She's always either lying with her head on my lap or clinging to me.
I like how calm and how peaceful this feels, I like just existing with her. I'm not used to this. I'm always working or with my unit, this feels different. This feels better.
I just can't let myself get too comfortable having my little pet, she's not staying.
