Chapter Thirty-Six

Maggie

My car sputters to a halt as I park in front of the Pine Cove Chronicle.

The late afternoon sunlight dances across the sky, bathing the lot in golden hues, but I don’t have time to linger on how much the amber glow reminds me of the flecks in Liam’s deep, chocolatey eyes.

There’s too much to do. Too much riding on this.

I have to write the article and get it live before the end of the day.

It has to align perfectly with the release of Liam’s standard drug test results.

I have to do this—for him, for me, for the truth.

Each step toward the building feels heavier than the last. My mind buzzes with everything I need to piece together, every word I need to craft carefully.

The lights inside the newsroom blaze brightly, a beacon of controlled chaos.

It means Odie and the rest of the team are still hard at work, no doubt trying to salvage our credibility in the wake of the doping allegations.

Unlike the gossip rags that gleefully ran the story with a flimsy allegedly slapped on it, we chose integrity. The Chronicle held the line. For now.

“Well, well, well,” Odie’s familiar voice cuts through the noise as I push open the door. He leans back in his chair with a grin that doesn’t quite reach his eyes. “Look what the cat dragged in.”

I glance around the room. The staff is gathered in pockets, some of them focused on their screens, others whispering. A few glance up at me, their faces full of curiosity and barely concealed frustration. I swallow hard and push forward, trying not to let their judgmental stares rattle me.

“Hey, everyone,” I greet them as I make my way to my desk.

Odie swivels his chair toward me and lowers his voice to a harsh whisper. “Please tell me you’ve got a story,” he says, his tone equal parts urgency and desperation.

“I have a story,” I say, dropping my bag onto the desk. My words hang in the air, and for a moment, the tension seems to ripple through the room. “But it’s not the one we were chasing before.”

Odie’s brow furrows, and he leans closer, his voice barely audible now. “What do you mean?”

“I mean I’ve got the real story,” I say, sitting down and powering on my laptop. “Liam’s clean. I have his drug test results, and I have his blessing to write the truth. All of it.”

I hand him my notebook as he reads, the room growing stilly by the second.

Odie’s eyes widen. “You’re serious? You have his permission to go on record with all of this?”

I nod, the weight of the responsibility pressing on my chest. “This isn’t just about proving he’s clean,” I say, my fingers hovering over the keyboard. “He wants the world to know everything. His diagnosis, the struggles he’s been hiding, all of it.”

For a moment, Odie looks stunned. Then, a slow, determined smile spreads across his face. “Alright, Cooper. Let’s get to work. This one’s going to put us on the map.”

I nod, pulling in a steadying breath as I prepare to write the most important story of my career. This is for Liam.

***

By the time I finish, my fingers feel stiff, and my eyes sting from staring at the screen for so long.

The newsroom around me has quieted, the hum of conversation replaced by the rhythmic tapping of keys and the faint buzz of fluorescent lights.

I’ve written plenty of articles during my time at the Chronicle, but none of them have ever felt this important—this pivotal.

This wasn’t just a story; it was Liam’s story.

And for better or worse, it was in my hands.

I scan the article once, then twice, making sure every word feels right. The weight of what this piece means—both for Liam and for me—sits heavy on my chest as I stand and walk it over to Odie.

“Done,” I say softly, placing the printed copy on his desk.

He looks up at me, his sharp eyes momentarily softening. “I’ll edit it,” he says simply, pulling the paper toward him. There’s no fanfare, no immediate feedback, but the seriousness in his tone tells me he knows how much this matters. That’s enough for now.

I return to my desk and collapse into my chair, my body feeling like it’s been through the wringer.

I stare blankly at my phone sitting on the corner of the desk, the screen dark but its presence loud.

Liam’s number is right there, just a tap away.

I could call him, or even send a quick text.

Let him know the article is finished. That his story—the truth—is about to be out there.

But the thought of hearing his voice right now makes my chest ache.

I’m emotionally drained, and I know if I hear that familiar warmth in his tone, it might undo me.

And if he doesn’t answer? If his voice is clipped and distant?

That might be worse. I’m not sure I have the strength for either scenario right now.

Instead, I lean back and close my eyes for a moment as I let the tiredness take over.

The silence feels deafening, and my mind races with everything that’s happened—the good, the bad, and the in-between.

Liam trusted me to write this. Trusted me to do it justice.

And now, all I can do is wait and hope I’ve lived up to that trust.

The sound of Odie’s chair creaking breaks my thoughts.

I open my eyes to see him scanning the pages, his pen moving swiftly across the paper.

He’s already deep in the editing process, and I can only hope that what I’ve written resonates as much with him as it does with me.

I let out a shaky breath and glance at my phone again, my thumb hovering over the screen.

Liam’s publicist texted me saying the proof will be going live in forty-five minutes. I have until then to upload my article.

Odie returns with it in hand. “It was good. No, better than good. It was your best.”

“Thanks,” I say as I take it from his outstretched hand.

“Get it uploaded,” Odie smirks. “Janowicz is going to shit himself.”

I fix the edits, then press publish as my eyes start scanning the article one final time.

Liam Thompson: The Real Story Behind the Snowboarding Legend's Next Chapter

For over a decade, Liam Thompson has been synonymous with greatness in the snowboarding world.

Known for his daring tricks, charismatic personality, and unwavering dedication, the 31-year-old athlete has been a force to reckon with on the slopes.

Fans have celebrated his victories, and aspiring snowboarders have looked up to him as a role model.

But behind the medals and the awe-inspiring runs lies a story few knew—until now.

Liam Thompson is finally ready to open up about the diagnosis that has reshaped his life, his decision to retire from competitive snowboarding, and the truth behind the doping allegations that recently rocked his career.

Just days ago, Thompson found himself at the center of a media storm when a gossip site published allegations that he had been using performance-enhancing drugs.

The article, citing an unnamed source, claimed that Thompson’s recent performances were “too good to be true” and alleged that he had been using substances to maintain his competitive edge.

The rumors spread quickly, tarnishing the reputation of an athlete who has built his career on hard work and integrity.

“When I saw the article, I was devastated,” Thompson admits. “Not because I was guilty—I’ve never touched anything illegal—but because it called into question everything I’ve worked so hard for. Snowboarding isn’t just a job for me; it’s my passion, my identity.”

But there was another reason the allegations hit so close to home.

Three weeks ago, Thompson received a diagnosis that would change his life forever: multiple sclerosis (MS).

MS is a chronic condition that affects the central nervous system, disrupting the flow of information between the brain and the body.

Symptoms vary from person to person, but they can include fatigue, muscle weakness, vision problems, and coordination issues.

“I started noticing symptoms during training about six months ago,” Thompson says.

“My legs would feel heavy, and I’d get this weird tingling in my hands.

At first, I thought it was just stress or overtraining, but it didn’t go away.

When I finally saw a doctor, they ran a bunch of tests and confirmed it was MS.”

For Thompson, the diagnosis was a blow. “It felt like my world was crumbling,” he begins. “Snowboarding has been my life since I was a kid. I couldn’t imagine a future where I wasn’t doing it.”

Despite the challenges, Thompson pushed through the season, determined to prove to himself and his fans that he could still compete. But as the symptoms worsened and the stress of hiding his condition mounted, he realized it was time to make a change.

“I’ve had an incredible career,” Thompson says. “Fifteen years of doing what I love at the highest level. But my body has given me all it can, and now it’s time to take care of it.”

Thompson’s decision to retire wasn’t easy, but he sees it as an opportunity to focus on his health and pursue new dreams. “I’m leaving on a high note,” he acknowledges, referencing his recent win at the Winter Summit.

“And I’m okay with that. I’d rather step away while I’m still proud of what I’ve accomplished than risk pushing myself to the point where I resent the sport I love. ”

As if grappling with a life-changing diagnosis and the decision to retire wasn’t enough, Thompson also had to face the false doping allegations. But instead of letting the rumors define him, he took immediate action to clear his name.

“I knew the truth would come out,” he says confidently. “I took a drug test as soon as the allegations surfaced, and the results speak for themselves.”

The test results, released to the public earlier today, confirmed that there were no performance-enhancing substances in Thompson’s system. The athlete also provided documentation from his doctors detailing his MS diagnosis, which further debunks the claims of drug use.

“MS has affected my performance, no doubt about it,” Thompson explains. “But it’s not because of anything illegal. It’s because my body is fighting a battle I can’t control. And that’s something I want people to understand—just because someone is struggling doesn’t mean they’re cheating.”

The rumors took a toll not only on Thompson but also on his family, friends, and team. “It was hard,” he admits. “Seeing the people I care about defending me while they were trying to make sense of the diagnosis I only recently shared with them.”

Thompson also acknowledges the support he’s received from fans. “The messages of encouragement have been incredible,” he says. “Knowing that people believe in me, even when others are trying to tear me down, means everything.”

As Thompson prepares to step away from competitive snowboarding, he’s focusing on the future.

“Retirement doesn’t mean I’m done with the sport.

I want to give back. Maybe I’ll coach or work with young athletes who are just starting out.

I want to help the next generation of snowboarders chase their dreams.”

He’s also planning to use his platform to raise awareness about MS. “It’s a condition that affects so many people, but there’s still a lot of misunderstanding about it,” he explains. “If sharing my story can help even one person feel less alone, then it’s worth it.”

Before wrapping up our interview, Thompson has one final message for his fans.

“Thank you. Thank you for supporting me, for believing in me, and for sticking with me through everything. I’ve always said that snowboarding isn’t just about the competitions or the medals—it’s about the community.

And I’m so grateful to be part of such an amazing one. ”

As he steps into this new chapter of his life, Thompson is determined to face whatever comes next with the same courage and determination that made him a legend on the slopes. “Life is unpredictable,” he says. “But it’s also beautiful. And I’m ready to embrace it.”

Liam Thompson’s journey may be taking a new direction, but his story is far from over. With his integrity intact and his spirit unshaken, he’s proving that even in the face of adversity, it’s possible to rise above the noise and carve out a path that’s uniquely your own.
