Chapter Six
“You look much better this morning,” Siobhan said as Noah came downstairs.
“Love will do that.” He grinned. Last night he had been worried about losing everything. Now he had more than he’d ever dreamed possible.
He and Sophie had planned their wedding while in the bath.
It would be in London, and would happen as soon as he could hire the minister.
He would’ve married her here and now, but she didn’t want to rob his mother of the chance to see him wed, and he wanted her friends from the Lending Circle to be there.
They had also decided to purchase Middleton’s overland coach enterprise. Their experience had taught them the value of reliable transportation between railheads, though Sophie was insistent on improving the state of the roads.
“Your missus looks well rested, too,” Siobhan said as she watched Sophie descend the stairs.
“Last night was exactly what we needed.” Sophie blushed as she took his hand. She glowed like a woman in love. With him.
He had almost lost her, not just to his own fears, but to the road and the fog. One wrong turn and he would’ve never seen her again. He had an intrepid traveler to thank for that.
“Has the other driver already left?” he asked.
“Thomas and Nancy?” Siobhan asked as she went for the teapot. “They’ve left for the depot an hour ago. I think she’s eager for the village to see her on Thomas’s arm.”
Noah shook his head. “Last night there was another coach on the road. It led me here.” A chill ran down his spine. “I wanted to thank the driver.”
“No, lad.” Siobhan frowned. “No one arrived but you.”
