“Ivy, I’m so sorry Ihaven’t been there in a few days,” Megan says on the phone. She called me today to check in and give me an update on Margaret. They still have her in the hospital. She has been hallucinating and calling out for her children. They are quite sure she is going to have to be admitted into the nursing home. Logan and I were going to visit them this morning, but Megan said they will not allow any more visitors since she is not in her right mind. They are also afraid she will get hostile if she’s overwhelmed too much.
“Megan, don’t worry. We have it under control. You just worry about your grandma.” I say into the phone as I pull open a box of journals I found in Margaret’s closet while I was putting laundry up.
I want to know more about who this Maggie is. Hopefully I can figure out where she is today and help bring her back for Margaret and Jefferey. Margaret told me the night she thought I was Maggie there were more journals in her closet. Sure enough, I found them as soon as I opened the door.
I hear Megan sigh on the other end of the line. “Well, how is everything? Are you and Logan getting along, okay?” she asks, and I laugh. “Better than okay.” I can hear the smile on the other end, “I knew y’all would find your way back to each other.” She pauses for a moment, “Once we get Grandma taken care of, I’ll be back, and we can start on the breeding program. I think our colt is going to be a star icon, if your plan works.” I smile at the thought of the plan succeeding and having Megan by my side.
“Love you, Ivy.” She says on the other end, “I’ll call as soon as I have another update.” As we end the call my heart rate finds an anxious rhythm as I go to open the box. I take the lid off slowly, and I am shocked at the number of notebooks containing Margaret’s letters; there must be fifty or more.
I scan through the books, searching for the start of them all. Once I make my way to the very bottom, I find it. I can tell it was put here long ago from the cover tearing at the corners. I note the date, 1999
Opening to the first page, the first thing I notice are smudges and smears, that I can only assume are from tears, throughout on various words. I can only imagine what Margaret was feeling as she started these letters. Were they simply to release her feelings, or was the intention for them to have Maggie actually read them, one day?
