Chapter Twenty-Six The First Olive Branch
“My mama said God fixes everything.”
The house was quiet again.
Dinner dishes were done, the kitchen lights dimmed. Sunni was in her room, humming softly as she folded laundry with gospel music playing low in the background.
Kane laid across her bed, phone in hand, staring at the same text thread she hadn’t opened since everything fell apart.
Minnie Girl ??
There were unread messages.
Apologies.
Check-ins.
“I miss you.”
“You were like peace for me.”
But Kane hadn’t replied.
Until now.
She tapped the screen slowly, fingers unsure at first… then steady.
Kane:
My mama said God fixes everything.
She stared at it for a few seconds.
Then typed again.
Kane:
Can you come to church with me on Sunday?
Three dots appeared.
Then stopped.
Then came back.
Minnie Girl ??:
Yes. I’d like that.
Kane let out a breath she didn’t know she was holding.
She didn’t tell anyone about the text. Not yet. This was hers.
For the first time in a long time, she felt… something soft.
Not forgiveness.
Not peace.
But maybe… the beginning of both.
