Chapter 30 #2
“Paddy, get into the computer system and download everything that you can,” Ronan ordered as he glanced at his watch. “We’re going to have to take this girl out of here under the cover of darkness, so it’ll need to be soon. Michaela, do you think she’s going to stay asleep a bit longer?”
“She looks like she’s still in a deep sleep,” Michaela said. “I don’t want to give her anything extra. I’ll need to run some blood tests. I think it’s best that I come with you and watch over her.”
Ronan nodded. “Right, I’m going to make arrangements to move her. Paddy, you get started on security. And Harvey, don’t do anything stupid.”
Harvey barely acknowledged him as they all started to move around him. Instead, he moved to the empty room and sat on the bed for a long moment, staring at the cameras before he lay down.
This is what Lily had experienced, what she’d lived through. It didn’t matter that she couldn’t remember it.
Although that had turned out to be quite the blessing, considering what must have gone on in here.
What the hell was he going to do? How was he going to tell her about what had happened? He couldn’t do it until he had all the answers, and even then, he just didn’t know what to tell her.
He was devastated.
A few hours later, he found himself back home.
But he couldn’t go up upstairs and crawl into bed beside her.
Not yet.
Paddy was going to go through all of the information he had, but it would take him a while. Until then, Ronan had told him to go home to check on Lily. To try and act normal until they knew the full story.
Everything had been cleaned up at the doctor’s house. They’d left his body for someone to discover and they’d also installed some cameras at the clinic to keep watch over the other two nurses employed by the doctor, the receptionist and security guard.
If they went into the private area, then they’d know they were part of it. Ronan wanted to see if anyone else went into that area.
Once Paddy had gone through everything, they’d leak some information to the cops and remove the cameras before they could be found.
Instead of going upstairs, he moved into his office and sat on the chair. He just stared at the computer screen, unsure of what to do. It felt like he should be doing something. Instead, he was just sitting here, aimless.
Should he tell her that they found the doctor? Should he tell her about her mother?
The other woman had seemed to have gone completely cuckoo. She was being held in the basement of Ronan’s house. Michaela had to give her something to calm her down.
All of her screeching and crying had been doing everyone’s head in.
He hated this. He didn’t want to lie to Lily, but at the same time, he should probably wait till he had more information.
Maybe the doctor had just been filming her for his own entertainment.
But he had a feeling the money the doctor was using to run the clinic had come from a different sort of revenue stream.
“Harvey?”
He glanced up to see her standing in the doorway. Her hair was all mussed. She rubbed at her eyes, and it drew up the bottom of the T-shirt she was wearing, so we could see her smooth and sexy upper thighs.
Fuck. He still couldn’t believe he’d eaten her out. That had been fucking amazing.
“Is everything okay?” she asked. “I woke up and you were gone.”
He couldn’t believe the way she’d been treated by her own mother and the doctor. Anger rose inside him, and he felt the urge to punch something. Or vomit. But he couldn’t do either because he had to keep this to himself. At least for a little bit longer.
Once he told her, her life wasn’t going to be the same again.
“Harvey, what’s wrong? You look so worried.”
She stepped forward, shivering slightly, and that’s when he realized that his T-shirt was the only thing she was wearing.
She had bare feet, and the floors were cold this morning.
In fact, the cabin wasn’t really that warm.
He needed to turn the heating up. The last thing he wanted was her getting sick.
“Baby, you shoudn’t be walking around without any socks on. You should have a dressing gown on too. Is there a dressing gown in your closet?”
Picking her up, he carried her out of the room and into the living room.
Setting her down, he grabbed a blanket and wrapped it around her, then sat on the sofa with her on his lap.
Should he be holding her like this when he knew the truth?
Harvey hated keeping things from her.
“Well, I woke up and you weren’t there, so I thought I’d come find you. How come you’re up so early?”
He had to tell her some of it.
“I got a phone call soon after you fell asleep,” he told her. “From the guy I had watching Dr. Wallace, he said he raced home and was acting strangely. So I thought I’d go over to the doctor’s house and see what was going on.”
“Did you talk to him?” she asked.
“When I went inside, he was dead.”
“Oh my God. Was it a heart attack or something?” She gave him a shocked look.
“No, baby. His throat was slit. Somebody must have been waiting in this house for him to get home. They murdered him, and then snuck out while we entered the house.”
She gasped. “He’s really dead?”
“Yeah, he’s really dead.” He swallowed. Should he tell her the next part?
“And your mother was there. In the house.”
