Chapter 6

CHAPTER

SIX

Payden

I can’t concentrate on work. All I keep doing is having flashbacks of Logan flipping me over and filling me with his giant cock.

Then there’s the shower scene. Man, I’m never going to be able to shower again without thinking about him bending me over and giving me another earth-shattering orgasm.

I don’t know what I’ve been doing with other men up until this point, but I’ve never had sex as great as that.

I want to text Luna, but she might rat me out when Logan goes to pick up Dozer, so I opt to text Willow instead.

Me

I know this is probably TMI bc you’re married to Haze but I have to get this off my chest

A few moments later, a message pings back.

Willow

Uh oh, what did you do?

Me

I slept with Logan

Willow

Oh my god

Me

I know. And it was good, really, really, really good

Willow

Ew. I mean, that’s great and all, but he’s still my brother-in-law

Me

I know, but I have to tell someone and Luna will blab the second she sees him

Willow

That’s true, but we have both been telling you for a while how you’d make a great couple

I snort. Great couple. Logan is great in bed.

Okay, he also looks hot in absolutely anything, and nothing at all, but he’s not the greatest at conversation.

I’ve tried to strike up idle chatter with him before and it’s like talking to a brick wall.

Granted, we had drinks last night, but neither of us were drunk. We were just tipsy.

Me

Hilarious. It’s just sex. I have no plans to order the wedding invitations just yet

Willow

Well that’s good bc I’m not convinced Logan will ever settle down. He’s always been a recluse, and a bachelor

Me

He made me a toasted turkey melt

A second later, my phone rings. I stand to shut my office door then pick up.

“Logan made you food?” Willow whisper-shouts.

Who’d have thought this would be such scandalous news?

“It was toasted bread,” I say. “He didn’t whip up a five-course meal.”

“Logan doesn’t cook for anyone, or toast bread for that matter. Maybe he likes you.”

“He liked me enough to have sex with me,”

“I meant, maybe he likes you more than that.” The unimplied duh is obvious.

“I seriously doubt it… though, he did ask for my number.”

I hear a clatter.

“Shit, sorry,” Willow says. “I just dropped my phone.”

“Is everything okay?”

“Where did you do it?”

“His, uh, bedroom.”

“Woah, woah, hold on a second. You mean to tell me he took you up to his place, made you a sandwich, and then asked for your number?”

“You’re missing a couple of hours of mindblowing sex in between, but in a nutshell, yes.”

I can just see her wincing at my words. “Ew, again. Look I don’t wanna imply anything because we both know Logan is Logan and he can’t commit to shit, but he’s never invited anyone up to his place, literally nobody except family.”

Huh.

Daddy is a dark horse after all.

“Well, we’d both had a few drinks, it was convenient,” I say, wondering if I’m reading more into this. “And it was just one night, Wills, don’t go getting all weird on me.”

“I’m not, it’s just I’ve never known him to let someone into his space.”

I stop tapping my pen on the pad in front of me. “Okay, well, we weren’t gonna say anything, but we’re eloping. Anything to get a vacation.”

She snorts. “How is the case going?”

A change of subject may be good because I’m still reeling from the aftershocks of being in Logan’s bed.

My firm has been working on a case involving multiple businesses downtown who laundered money through a bunch of different companies.

It’s messy, and there are several legal entities involved including Cini Media—one of the biggest advertising agencies in Louisiana.

There are whistleblowers who worked for Cini in protective custody and security is on high alert.

I don’t know for sure, but Cini Media has a bad reputation for being involved in the criminal underworld.

The club looked into it, but there are layers and layers of companies over companies.

I know Sawyer is still making it his mission in life to get to the bottom of it, but covering up to this degree with layers and layers of software protection can only mean they have something to hide.

That isn’t my area of expertise, but the office has been engaged in this one case for the better part of a month.

“Ugh, the usual. The representative for Cini Media buried us in bureaucratic red tape, just as we predicted they would. Once the DA’s office enlisted the firm, my boss threw the entire team on the case.”

Ah, my boss Jeremy Jones. He’s been a lawyer longer than I’ve been born. He’s been good to me, but he’s a bulldog. I guess you don’t get anywhere in this business being a pushover.

“Well, just be careful, we all know what happens when the criminal underworlds are under scrutiny. They’ll take out whoever they need to to survive.”

I don’t tell Willow that for the last few weeks I thought someone was following me. Turns out, I am actually getting paranoid in my old age.

I recently watched Luna and Nova go undercover for the MC in a bid to get information from one of the assholes who was running a criminal syndicate.

Maybe I’m just getting too in my head with all of it.

There was a time when Nova thought her ex, Bobby, was following her.

She swore she saw him a couple of times, but when Sawyer checked, he found out Bobby is in jail.

At least for a few more months. No way will the MC let him breathe the same air as her once he gets out.

One might think that for a lawyer I’d be on the right side of the law, and I am, for the most part.

But sometimes there’s only one way to deal with child rapists and human traffickers.

And that’s putting them six feet under. I’ve seen way too many criminals and dregs of society get let off and serve as little time as possible.

Sometimes it makes me wonder if I’m making any difference in the world.

I want to. I try to. But sometimes I don’t know if I’m fulfilling my life’s purpose.

I’m a lawyer because my dad is one. He always had high hopes for me—well, both my parents did.

My younger brother, Declan, wasn’t the academic type, so all the pressure was put on my shoulders.

My parents are rich, and my mom hasn’t worked a day in her life.

She likes to hobnob with the socialites and dedicate all her time and energy into her charity work.

We used to live in Pittsburgh, but my dad got a job in New Orleans shortly after I graduated.

My brother didn’t make the move but he keeps in touch.

We text all the time and for the last few years he’s been working in Mississippi as a tow truck driver.

Declan has always been good with his hands.

He’s smart too, but one of those people who just finds trouble wherever they go. I miss him.

“I’ll be careful,” I say to Willow. “I gotta go.”

“We’ll catch up this week, okay?”

“It’s a date.”

We hang up and I get back to work. My boss has us working overtime this week, and I know by the end of the day, I’m going to need a bubble bath and a glass of wine.

I don’t have any more time to think about Logan and what he’s been doing since we hooked up.

I also haven’t heard from him, so when I’m one glass of wine in, and sinking into the hot suds with time on my hands, I shoot him a message.

Look, I’ve never been one to shy away from making the first move.

I’ve always been a risk taker, but since this is about his new foster dog, I feel like it’s safe territory.

Me

How did it go with Dozer?

I also remember Logan complaining about texting and how much he hates technology.

I snort a laugh then sober when I think about him naked.

His hot, pierced cock jutting out. Wow. I’ve never seen anything so beautiful in all my life.

And yeah, maybe secretly I am wondering when I’ll get to see it again. I want that.

I rest my head back on the inflatable pillow and close my eyes. This is nice. My apartment is in a gated community, and while I like it, I have thought about moving somewhere bigger.

I have a few investments in my portfolio, and renting was only a short-term gig.

I’ve been so busy with work, I just haven’t had time to seek out my own apartment.

Now that Nova, my roommate, is practically living over at Sawyer’s, I feel like it could be the right time.

I have no issue if she wants to move out.

I like having company, and Nova is easy to live with, but I’m not gonna lie and say I’m not envious that she has Sawyer to go home to every night.

I’ve been by myself for a while now, and I’ve done a lot in my career.

I never wanted the kid thing, but I do enjoy older kids.

My friend Bella, who is also Priest’s—the club’s spiritual adviser’s ol’ lady—has a creative studio called Amara’s Place.

It started off as a rec center for underprivileged women where they can learn how to get new skills and offer low rental spaces for art classes and yoga.

It’s fun, and we recently had a game night for one of the high schools to help raise money for camp.

I really enjoyed interacting with all the teenagers who took an interest in career day, and wanted to know what I did and how they could become a lawyer, too.

One of my passions is giving back. My mom may have been a trophy wife her entire life, but she donates a lot of time and money.

She doesn’t just use her wealth for Hermes bags and European vacations.

All the profits from Amara’s Place go to help women and children in need.

The club is also heavily involved with the Soup Kitchen; a drop-in cafe for the homeless that Priest and Bella run, with the help of Manny, the club chef, and other members of the MC and the public. We all do our bit when we can.

It makes me realize what a privileged life I have led when some of the kids don’t have parents, and can’t afford school books.

I have given my own money several times when donations were super low.

The joy on the kids’ faces when they got a new pair of sneakers, or books and pencils, was enough to make me teary.

And I don’t cry for just anybody. Maybe I should be doing more things like that? To help people in a different way.

My phone dinging with a message pulls me out of my thoughts.

Logan.

I smirk. It only took him ten minutes to reply.

Logan

He’s great. Full of energy. Three legs hasn’t deterred his spirit

I stare at the message. For a bartender/biker, Logan is a lot more well-versed than I give him credit for. I don’t know if he went to college, nor does it matter, but he’s no dummy.

Me

That’s good. I’m glad he has you running around after him

Logan

Yeah, he seems to know all the ways to get me to feed him treats

I smirk. Now I’ve got him on the hop, I send him another text.

Me

Awww, see, small dogs can be super sweet

Logan

Lucky for him he’s cute… he’s a chewer

Me

Oh, no. He needs some chew toys

Logan

Unfortunately for me, I’m all out

I get online and start researching. DoorDash can deliver. I don’t know if I’m going a little crazy, or interfering, but I enter Logan’s address and then hit the payment button.

Me

I have some on the way

A few minutes goes by.

Logan

What do you mean by that?

Me

I just ordered a bunch. If you’ve got food, you can hide it in some of the toys to make it a fun game for him. It’ll keep him distracted for hours

Logan

Is it any wonder you rule the world?

I laugh out loud.

Me

I don’t know about that. I rule my own universe, that’s about it

The gray bubble appears, then disappears.

I don’t know why disappointment fills me when he doesn’t reply.

It’s only when I’m getting out of the bath that I hear my phone again almost forty minutes later.

I smile when I see the photo of Dozer with a Konga ball in his mouth—the one you hide treats in—and his new toy by his side.

Logan

Dozer thanks you. He also loves his new penguin

Logan

You didn’t have to do that

Logan

But thanks

Me

Any time

The gray dots do their thing again and I sigh when I read his next text:

Logan

Goodnight, Payden

I tap out a reply, wishing I didn’t feel so damn lonely. I need to snap out of this.

Me

Goodnight, Loges

He doesn’t even chastise me for the jab, and I go to bed wishing I could snuggle up next to them both.
