God it’s good to be able to relax. Classes have been dragging the past few weeks and if I have to hear one more motherfucking thing about the Krebs Cycle I might throw myself off the nearest bridge.

Me: My brain is mush

Nat: Same. Grey matter and mush.

I hit the call button and wait. “Hey Bays, what’s up?”

“Just checking in. I feel like there is so much information between my ears that I don’t even know how to function right now. How are you holding up? I can’t imagine med school is any better.”

“Fuck no it’s not. I literally couldn’t remember my social yesterday. I have the dumb. Acute on chronic dumb,” she laughs.

“No shit, me too. Liam said you’re coming to the thing this weekend? His buddy’s big get-together? Some social nightmare he has decided to drag us to?”

“Unfortunately,” she sighs. “I miss you guys and I’m hoping that if I can just hang out at home the next few days and catch up on sleep, I’ll be more excited about it than I am now.” I can hear her rolling her eyes. “How are things with Peyton? You guys good?”

“Yeah. We’re great, actually.” Besides the fact that she’s chronically upset with me because I can’t get it up?

“She’s been amazing and I think it helps that she understands how grueling school can be.

She’s ready for a break too. Apparently she and Liam have a professor that’s been giving them shit all term. ”

Nat laughs at that. “Well, I’m about to crash. I love you, tell Peyton I said hi and I’ll see you this weekend.”

“Love you too, Nat.” I hang up and drag myself to bed. I don’t even bother showering. I put my glasses in the drawer, pretending I don’t see the feather—pretending I don’t miss him.

I just flop over, face down, and let sleep wrap her arms around me, swirling images of brown eyes and a mischievous smile chasing me into the dark.
