Chapter Eight

R wakes up to an email that says she’s won two lottery tickets to see Hamilton. Not once in the nine months she’s entered the lottery has she won. R thinks about who to invite, but M has moved out of London, L has moved out of the country, and N… well, N has moved out emotionally.

R

Have you seen Hamilton?

S

I don’t really do musicals, but I’ve heard that’s one to see.

R

I won two tickets in the lottery for this evening’s show.

S

That lottery app works?

If you’re asking if I’d like to join you, then yes, I would.

R

Great!

Do you have any other plans today?

S

No, why?

R

The show starts at 5:30. Wanna meet at noon?

R&S proceed to spend the entire day together.

At Sketch for afternoon tea, R discovers that, despite S’s sweet tooth, she prefers floral blends and never adds sugar.

R wonders if she’s visited the tea shop in Leicester Square and makes a mental note to suggest going if not.

At the National Portrait Gallery, S notices R stop for longer at oil paintings and tilt her head to the right to consider a piece she likes, but to the left when not too interested.

In a bookshop R catches S heading straight for the tables with staff recommendations whereas S watches R pull books off shelves at random.

On Regent Street, S tries on a black cashmere jumper with a high turtleneck that brushes the tip of her chin.

R tries on a pair of corduroy trousers in a burnt-butter brown that come in at the waist and flare out at the ankles.

S picked it out for R to try and this alone convinced her to buy it.

Inside the theater, R feels S tap her foot during “Guns & Ships” and catches her sniffing quietly during “Burn.” At a late dinner S watches R eat her vegetables first and give a relieved sigh before moving on to her meat and carbs.

The childish simplicity of this likely subconscious practice makes S shake her head and smile.
