Chapter 4

Right now

An Answer: Eve

“Saturday?” Eve says.

“Yeah,” Danny says. “I have two tickets to this outdoor show. I don’t suppose you know the band Snowy Owl?”

“I love Snowy Owl.”

“Oh, well, I mean, if you wanted to come. Could be fun.”

Danny seems to be blinking at about twice the frequency of normal.

Eve is charmed by his nervousness, but also, she is charmed by his familiarity.

This is not a stranger but Danny, her Danny.

And she is surprised how unbruised she feels post-Fletcher.

Like maybe no one can really hurt her. So you know?

What’s the harm? Eve is not the type to have her heart broken.

“I would love to,” she says. “Like a date?”

He is beautiful when he smiles. Like the sun. “Yeah,” he says. “Like a date.”
