Some time later, on his last day at Pattern, Danny makes a final change, and then he logs out, closes his laptop, and leaves his badge at the front desk.

He and Eve are going to eat breakfast for dinner with their friends, and then they’ll walk home in the lazy summer heat, and they’ll fall asleep on the couch because they stay up so late talking—about what’s next, about what might be.

It will be some time before anyone notices what Danny did.

It was a small thing; just one little manual override.

A user will only ever notice if they ask Bug to tell them a dad joke.
