Love is for Family (New Adventures in Love #5)

Chapter 1

Kyle

“You know, it’s never too early to start a family,” Louisa said to Jon on the FaceTime call. Louisa was Jon’s mom; she lived in Phoenix with Jon’s sister, Bernadette.

Kyle saw Jon roll his eyes, and he smiled. Louisa certainly knew how to push her son’s buttons. “I know, Mama, but Kyle and I are just getting used to living together here in DC. We haven’t had much time to talk about when or even if we want to start a family.”

“Of course, you’re going to start a family, hijo! And you need to do it soon. You’re not getting any younger, Jon. And neither am I.” Louisa was adamant.

“Fine, Mama,” Jon relented, obviously not wishing to argue with his mom. “I promise I’ll talk to Kyle about it.”

“You tell that handsome boyfriend of yours that I want some more nietos, okay?” Bernie had two children, but Louisa was always pushing for more.

“I’ll be sure to tell him, Mama.” Jon laughed and shook his head. “Okay, I gotta go, but I’ll call you next week. Love you, Mama.”

“I love you too, hijo.” Jon ended the call and put his iPad on the coffee table.

“Your mom thinks I’m handsome,” Kyle said, batting his eyes.

“That’s because you are.” Jon chuckled. He rose from the sofa and planted a kiss firmly on Kyle’s lips. “You heard that Mom wants more grandchildren?”

“Yeah. I guess maybe we’re not trying hard enough,” Kyle deadpanned. “Maybe we just need to work on that.”

“I promise to start tonight.” Jon leered at him.

“Sounds like a plan,” Kyle said, trying hard not to roll his eyes at their little joke.

True to his word, Jon had tried hard the night before to make a baby, so Kyle sat gingerly at his desk that morning.

He was having a difficult time focusing, not only because his ass was sore—in the best way possible—but because he and Jon had just returned from a two-week Mediterranean cruise, and he wasn’t really happy to be back at work.

He worked as a senior financial analyst at a leading investment firm in Washington, DC, and normally he enjoyed his job, but part of his brain was still in the Med, celebrating the recent marriage of his dad to Rob Asher.

They had decided to turn their honeymoon into a family-and-friends celebration that included, among others, Kyle’s cousin Mike, his wife Becky, and their eighteen-month-old son, Wyatt.

Louisa’s comment the day before about starting a family had reminded Kyle of a conversation that took place on the ship with Mike and Becky.

“So things are going well between you and Jon?” Mike asked as he bounced Wyatt on his knee. They were sitting in the nearly empty suite lounge aboard the Ocean Explorer.

“They are. Frankly, since neither Jon nor I had ever lived with someone else before, I wasn’t sure how smoothly things were going to go when we moved in together, but we mesh really well. I’m convinced that he’s the one for me.”

“That’s great!” Becky effused. “Have you guys talked yet about starting a family?”

“No,” Kyle admitted. “But I know it’s on Jon’s mind. His mom is always telling him that he needs to give her more grandchildren!”

“Wow, talk about pressure,” Mike said. “Do you actually want kids?”

“Yeah, I guess I do,” Kyle said. “Honestly, I wasn’t completely sure before this cruise, but hanging out with you guys has kind of convinced me.

Wyatt’s a great kid, and I’ve really enjoyed spending time with him.

I can definitely see Jon and I being dads at some point.

But since we’ve only been together for a short time, I guess it’s something we’re gonna have to talk about and plan for. ”

“It’s never too early to talk about it even if you don’t want to have kids for a few years,” Mike said. “After all, there are options to discuss. Like adoption versus surrogacy, for example. And remember, Jon is several years older than you, so don’t wait too long.”

“Yeah,” Kyle concurred. “I’ll definitely talk to Jon about it once we get home.”

Kyle sighed. It was definitely time for him and Jon to talk about when they thought they’d be ready to start a family.

As Mike had pointed out, Jon was older than him by almost thirteen years, so they couldn’t wait too long if they were gonna do this.

Okay, enough woolgathering—time to get to work.

But before he had a chance to open the account file he needed to update, his cell phone rang, Jon’s face appearing on the screen.

After speaking with his boyfriend for a few minutes and learning that they’d been invited to a Halloween party that they couldn’t say no to, he hung up and sighed.

Great. Now I have to spend my lunch hour trying to find costumes.

Kyle walked into the condo he shared with Jon and called out, “Jon? I’m home.” He walked up to the main level, carrying two garment bags and a shopping bag.

Jon met him at the top of the stairs, gave him a kiss, and took the garment bags, draping them over one of the chairs in the living room. Jon’s manager had invited them both to a Halloween party in Virginia on Friday night, and Kyle had picked up their costumes on the way home from work.

“I picked up some vegetable lasagna for dinner at the place around the corner. It’s keeping warm in the oven,” Jon told him.

“Excellent. Lemme go upstairs and change before we eat.”

When Kyle returned a few minutes later, Jon had set the table and was plating the lasagna. Over dinner, they caught each other up on their first day back to work.

“All in all, it was a good day but pretty hectic,” Jon said, wrapping up his summary.

“Yeah, same for me although it took me a while to get into the swing of things at work. Part of my brain was still in the Med.”

“I know what you mean,” Jon agreed. “That vacation was perfect.”

“But all good things must come to an end,” Kyle said, picking up his and Jon’s plates and loading the dishwasher. “Thanks again for getting dinner. That was delicious.”

“You’re very welcome. It was the least I could do since you picked up the costumes for this coming weekend.” Jon stared at him, lust in his eyes. “I was thinking we could go to bed early tonight.”

“Oh, really?” Kyle stared back, smiling. “Does this have anything to do with our baby-making plans for your mom?” How long would they be able to keep this silly joke going?

“Of course.” Jon chuckled. “After all, I tried to put a baby in you last night; it’s only fair that you get to try tonight.”

“Well, fair is fair. Let me toss some laundry in the washer, and then I’ll meet you upstairs. I expect you to be naked and waiting when I get there,” Kyle said as an evil grin spread across his lips.

“Yes, sir.”
