Chapter 20
Chapter Twenty
WYATT
I wake up to sunlight streaming through the crack in the hotel curtains and something perpetually buzzing.
Nash’s slender leg is thrown haphazardly over my thigh.
She must have rolled around during the night because she fell asleep facing away from me.
It felt like a defensive measure—from what, I’m not sure.
Maybe last night was more than she could take.
Maybe being with me in public like that was harder than she thought it would be.
I hope that isn’t the case, but she was unreadable last night.
She starts to move in her sleep, and I freeze, not wanting to disturb her.
Her leg starts moving farther up my thigh and I have to bite down on my lip to keep from making any noise as she just barely grazes my junk with her knee.
Oh fuck. I’m being split in two. Half of me is a little worried she’s going to knee me in the balls, and the other half is ready to go to war to earn more of her touch.
I don’t want it to be an accident. I want it to be purposeful.
The noise starts up again, startling me out of my lustful thoughts.
For a second I think it’s a fly whizzing by my ear, but when I look at the nightstand for something to swing at it with, I realize it’s my phone.
I think about ignoring it and trying to go back to sleep, but as I watch, ten new texts come in, so I give in to my curiosity.
What could everyone possibly be talking about this early on a Sunday.
Oh, fuck. It’s me.
The group text with me and my Hurricanes teammates seems to be the most persistent, so I start there.
Colin
GIRLFRIEND?
Jaden
WTF IS GOING ON?
Mack
Why is everyone screaming?
Colin
Wyatt just called Nash his girlfriend at the NFL Honors.
Mack
OH SHIT
Jaden
Exactly!
Colin
Wyatt, you little bitch, you better respond.
Mack
No need for name calling, man. You’re going to scare him off, and then we’ll never know.
Okay, maybe I should have been less heavy handed with the drop on this—given them a heads up somehow—but how could I when I know this whole thing is fake? Honestly, it was easiest for me to just say it to everyone, and no one, at the same time.
Another text comes through.
Colin
We’re waiting
Mack
Are we really that surprised?
When did these guys, who I didn’t even want as my teammates, get so in my business? As a matter of fact, when did this group chat even start? When did we become…friends.
I start to type back.
It just sort of…happened
I mean, true.
Colin
And why didn’t you say anything?
It’s really new. I didn’t want to jinx anything.
Also true.
She’s with me right now and we have a long drive home, so chill out.
Jaden
You can explain at the gym.
I will.
I collapse back onto the overly stuffed hotel pillow, letting the phone fall to my chest. At least I was able to buy myself some time to think and make a plan before I see them on Thursday.
It seems like an oversight on my part that I never thought about what this agreement would mean when it came to them.
My parents are going to be easy; hence my mother’s joy over the phone.
My brother might be suspicious, but he’s so busy, he probably doesn’t care.
They’re also many states away, so they’re not going to be able to get up in my face about it until June when I bring Nash to Henry’s wedding.
Colin, Jaden, and Mack will be the only ones in the near future to get a good whack at me at Ironsides during our workout in just a couple days.
Great, I can’t wait.
