24. Epilogue
Jimmy
The late June sun warms my back as Eve, and I wander through the strawberry field. Red-ripened berries peek out from their leafy green veils. The Cherokee Legend of the First Strawberry echoes in my mind—a story of forgiveness and perseverance that has become our own.
Eve reaches down, plucking a plump berry. She rolls it between her fingers before offering it to me. As I take it, our fingers brush, sending a familiar spark through me. Her touch still excites me, even after all these years.
"Sweet," she says as she takes a bite of a berry she picked for herself.
"Like Maggie Rose," I reply, savoring the burst of flavor and the smoothness of our granddaughter's name on my tongue.
"Named after my mother," Eve adds, her eyes misting. "She would have adored her."
"Your mother would have been proud of you, Eve. For everything you've done for us."
"Us," she repeats, a smile blooming like the wildflowers that border the field. "It's so sweet to be 'us' again, isn't it?"
"It is, indeed," I agree, my heart swelling with contentment.
As we near the edge of the strawberry field, the path ahead leads back towards Strawberry Falls. I can see the town in the distance, Monarch Bakery standing proud among the other buildings.
"Can you believe it, Eve? Monarch Bakery is buzzing with life these days. It seems as though the entire town has embraced it as their second home."
She nods, her face lighting up at the sight. "It's like watching a sapling grow into a mighty oak overnight. The way everyone has rallied around us, it's nothing short of miraculous."
"And to think it all started with Ella's dream," I say, my chest swelling with pride. "She's really come into her own as head baker."
Eve's smile widens. "She has. And Drew's been amazing. Taking care of little Maggie along with his work at the bakery so Ella can focus on her passion. They make quite the team."
"Just like us," I add, giving Eve's hand a gentle squeeze.
"Remember the morning of the grand opening?" I chuckle. "The line stretched around the block. I thought we'd run out of goods before sunrise."
Eve laughs, a musical sound that stirs something deep within me. "And yet, we managed. You and Drew out front, charming the regulars, while Ella and I were covered in flour, trying to keep up with the orders."
"Charming? I was sweating bullets!" I confess. "But watching everyone enjoying the goodies, their smiles... It made every second worth it."
"We've all poured our hearts into it. And it's not just a bakery, but a symbol of resilience, of coming back stronger.
We pause for a moment, looking out over the town. The sight of Evergreen Inn in the distance brings a smile to both our faces.
"Can you believe Holly and Hank's wedding is just around the corner?" Eve asks, her voice tinged with excitement.
"Seems like yesterday we were doing the same," I reply, picturing the couple exchanging vows.
"Only it took us a couple of tries to get it right," Eve says, a teasing lilt in her voice.
"More than a couple," I chuckle. The memory of our vow renewal on New Year's Eve warms my heart.
"And then there's Audrey and Bobby," I add. "Who would've thought our mess would help those two find each other?"
"Love sure works in mysterious ways." Eve winks at me.
"You're so right." I kiss her on the cheek.
She ruffles her fingers through my hair. "I have high hopes for them."
"Yes. Me too."
A comfortable silence falls between us as we continue our walk. The gentle breeze carries the sweet scent of strawberries, mingling with the earthy aroma of the surrounding woods. It's a perfect moment, one I want to savor forever.
"You know," I begin, breaking the silence, "I've been thinking a lot about how far we've come."
Eve turns to me, her eyes soft with understanding. "We've certainly been through our share of trials, haven't we?"
I nod as my chest tightens. "Ella's health scare... that was a wake-up call for me. I realized how much I'd missed. How close I came to losing everything that matters."
"But you stepped up, Jimmy." Eve reaches up, cupping my face in her hands. "You were there for Ella, Drew, all of us."
I lean into her touch, marveling at the forgiveness and love I see in her eyes. "Thanks to you." I pull her close. "You gave me a second chance. You believed in me when I couldn't believe in myself."
"We believed in each other," Eve corrects gently. "And look where it's brought us."
"You know, the most important thing I've learned in therapy is about forgiveness. Not just forgiving others but forgiving myself. For years, I carried the anger towards my father for leaving. But I realized I was just as angry at myself. For the bakery fire, for running away, for nearly destroying our family."
"Jimmy," Eve starts, but I gently squeeze her hand.
"Let me finish, please," I say softly. "The thing is, I couldn't truly forgive my father or receive your forgiveness until I learned to forgive myself."
Eve's eyes glisten with unshed tears. "Oh, Jimmy."
"It was like a chain reaction," I explain, my voice thick with emotion. "Once I stopped judging myself so harshly, I could stop judging others—including my father. I realized he was probably fighting his own battles, just like I was."
"That's a powerful realization."
"It's changed everything. I'm not saying it's easy, but I've decided to quit being a judge—of myself and others. It's not my place, and it only holds me back."
"I'm so proud of you, Jimmy. That's not an easy thing to do."
"It's a daily choice. But it's worth it. It's allowed me to focus on what's truly important—our family, our love, the life we're rebuilding together."
Eve smiles, her eyes shining. "We've both learned that lesson, haven't we? It's not about being perfect or never making mistakes. It's about learning from them, growing together, and remembering what truly matters."
The setting sun paints Eve’s face in a warm, golden glow. Overcome by the moment and the intensity of my feelings, I gently cup her face in my hands.
Our lips meet in a tender and passionate kiss, a perfect blend of our long history and renewed love. Eve's arms wrap around my neck, pulling me closer as she deepens the kiss. Everything fades, leaving just us.
When we finally part, both breathless, I rest my forehead against hers. "I love you, Evelyn Callahan. More than I ever thought possible."
"I love you too, James Callahan. Always have. Always will."
We've weathered storms, faced our demons, and emerged stronger on the other side. As we walk hand in hand back towards Strawberry Falls, I feel a sense of peace and excitement for the future we'll build together. Whatever challenges lie ahead, I know we'll face them together, with love, forgiveness, and family as our guiding stars.
