Chapter 15

It was the day of the summer bash, and from the moment I woke up, I was on go.

The day started with Kairo and me taking the dogs for a walk.

Then I had to get dressed for the day. After dropping Cashmere off at the doggy day care, I headed to the park to make sure everything was set up the way it was supposed to be.

Kairo had been there as well, but we hadn’t seen each other.

We worked so hard on everything, so we wanted it to be perfect.

Most of the town had come out for the event. Mayor Wilson as well as council members from city hall were there. I was introduced to the mayor, and I knew I had to be careful around him. He had the capability of reprimanding Kairo if he ever found out we were together.

Firefighters, doctors, business owners, and other prominent figures came out as well. It was a big deal, and I felt proud that I had been a part of it. I tried to get my parents to come, but they already had plans. Chanel had to work, so she couldn’t make it either.

“What’s up, Cousin?” Elias approached me and put his arm around my shoulder.

“You move to my town then act like you don’t know me.” He put me in a headlock. If he thought I wouldn’t punch him in his ribs, he would have rubbed his knuckles over my head.

My mother would get so mad when Elias and I played rough. Since Elias was my favorite cousin, we spent a lot of time together, and it turned me into a tomboy for a short time period.

“It’s not even like that. I’ve been busy.”

Elias tilted his head to the side. “Busy doing what? You still fucking with the chief?” He whispered that last part.

I shared the news of the situation with Elias one day when he called to check on me. I told him I had to go because of another call, and he made sure to ask about it when we talked again.

“Yup.”

“Good. Where he at anyway?”

I looked around, but there were so many people around, it was hard to spot Kairo.

“Somewhere around here. I do know he’s supposed to be running one of the games at some point.”

We had volunteers, but Kairo and I agreed that we would work two of the activities. My job was to run the water gun race game because it had always been one of my favorites. I wasn’t sure if Kairo decided on the dunk tank or ring toss game.

“I’m sure I’ll run into him at some point.”

“I’m sure you will. I’m surprised you are even here.”

Elias worked a lot and wasn’t big on being around a lot of people, so to see him at this event shocked me.

“Only because I had to come lay eyes on you and talk to Kairo.”

“About what?” I crossed my arms over my chest.

Multiple women walked past, gawking at Elias. They didn’t know the relationship between us, but that didn’t stop them from ogling him. Some even went as far as licking their lips and winking at him.

At damn near seven feet and swollen with muscles, it was hard for women not to look. Kairo wasn’t a little guy, but Elias was huge as hell. That was one of the reasons why I was glad that he never got hold of Brian because he would have really hurt him.

“Don’t worry about that.” He hugged me from the side and kissed the top of my head. “I’m going to walk around for a little while. If I don’t see you again, let me know when you make it home.”

“Will do.”

Elias walked away, and I walked over to the game I was stationed at. There was a teenage girl manning it, but she was happy to go find her friends. There were a few teenagers floating to specifically relieve people for their breaks.

Kairo emphasized how important it was for me to take advantage of them to take breaks, but I hadn’t.

He checked to make sure I ate three meals a day, every day.

We’d been spending almost every day, all day together.

I still hadn’t found anything wrong with him, and sometimes that made me nervous.

I wasn’t sure if he was pretending or not.

Sex with him had been even better since the first time.

He even made do on his promise and fucked me from the back with my hands handcuffed behind me.

Things got freaky that night, and I loved every bit of it.

I liked when Kairo took charge and gave me directions.

Brian thought he was being dominant, but all it did was turn me off.

I’d met a lot of people throughout the day, including Kairo’s siblings. They both were very nice to me, and the looks they gave me made me think they knew about the secret Kairo and I shared. Neither of them said anything, so I wasn’t sure.

I spent the better part of my day running the game and talking to people who lived in the town.

I’d come across couples that had lived there since the early forties.

I heard stories about different things and places, some that didn’t exist anymore.

I talked to families who said they really enjoyed the event, and they wondered if I did private events.

I never thought about it, and I didn’t plan on it.

The turnout was better than I expected. Since it was so warm out, I wore shorts, a shirt, and a baseball cap with sneakers. I was cute and comfortable.

I wanted to take a break because I hadn’t seen Kairo, and I wanted some cotton candy, so I had one of the teens come over to relieve me.

I told her I would be gone for at least an hour. I stopped at the cotton candy station and grabbed some blue and pink cotton candy.

As I walked around, I looked at the different game stations and other stuff Kairo and I put together. Kairo was even able to secure a few music artists to perform.

I had just shoved some of the pink confection in my mouth when I spotted Kairo talking to a woman.

It wasn’t illegal for him to talk to another woman, but she was too handsy in my opinion.

I couldn’t hear what he said, but whatever it was made her laugh so hard, she tossed her head back.

Her hand rubbed over his muscular arms way too many times within the seconds of me spotting them.

She clearly didn’t know the definition of personal space, or she had been in his space enough times to feel that comfortable.

A burning sensation filled my belly because Kairo didn’t even bother setting a boundary.

I had to remind myself that he wasn’t my man, and he could do what he wanted.

But we established that we didn’t like to share.

My inner thoughts reminded me of the conversation Kairo and I had, so I wasn’t wrong for feeling what I felt.

The old me would have left him alone for good, but I wasn’t the same. He showed me that he was a good dude so far, so I decided I needed to talk to him before I made any conclusions.

For a minute, the scene reminded me of what I went through with Brian.

He had a coworker who conveniently liked to touch on him all the time.

At first, I thought maybe she was just one of those types of people, but then I found out he used to fuck her in a supply closet.

I didn’t want to think Kairo was on some bullshit, so I decided to go the other way before I caused a scene.

I turned to walk away, but Kairo’s voice stopped me.

“Mycah.”

I rolled my eyes but forced a smile when I turned around.

“Oh, hey, Kairo.”

His eyebrows bunched as he looked at me.

“Hey. You good?”

“I am. I was just taking a little break.” My tone came out with more of a bite than I planned.

Kairo’s head jerked back, but before he could respond, his friend came over and stood right next to him.

“Hi, I’m Angela.” She stuck her hand out, and I almost ignored it, but there was no need for me to be rude.

She didn’t know anything about me or the tightness I felt in my chest when I saw how friendly she and Kairo were. It wasn’t her fault that Kairo hadn’t said anything about her being all over him.

“Hi, I’m Mycah. It was nice to meet you. I have to get back to my post.” I smiled.

Before I turned to leave, I noticed the look on Kairo’s face. I could tell he felt some type of way about our quick interaction, but he couldn’t say anything about it with Angela standing so close. She acted like she was staking her claim, and I was sure Kairo knew that I didn’t like what I saw.

On the inside, I was seething, but I plastered on a smile as I made my way back to my post. I wasn’t sure if I was overreacting or not, and I didn’t have time to process it because I had work to do. I couldn’t wait for this thing to be over so Kairo and I could have a conversation.
