Chapter 58

Chapter Fifty-Eight

ROMAN

“Action!” Arnold calls, and I snap into character.

It’s been two weeks in New York City, and now we’re capturing the final exterior shot for the film. Coincidentally, it is the last shot for the film in general.

Working quickly to capture what we need in the dusky light after the sun has just set, everyone is on their A-game.

The lighting techs run around with their equipment, and we waste no time, having spent what feels like forever running through the blocking and all the shots we need.

There are multiple cameras filming this scene from different angles, so hopefully we capture everything.

If not, we’ll have to try again tomorrow.

Clover’s in character, staring from the building rooftop at the sparkling city lights beyond, coming to life as darkness steals the color from the sky. The wind blows gently, tossing strands of copper around her shoulders.

After a beat or two, she turns and notices my character standing before her.

“You made it,” she breathes, eyes alight with surprise and longing.

It makes something in my chest feel tight. I need to remind myself that we’re acting right now. Fuck, get your head in the game, Everett...

“I told you I would.” My voice is gravelly, bearing in mind that the scene before this one my character was in a fight with the villain and his voice would be hoarse.

“But I thought...” she trails off and I close the distance between us, cradling her face and bringing her in for a kiss.

“I will always find you. No matter what comes. As darkness rises, we’ll face it together.

” Our foreheads rest together, and even though it’s not scripted, I pull her back in for another kiss.

Pressing her body tightly to mine and kissing her with all the intensity my character’s feeling in this moment.

Relief at being reunited with her, and fear over what the future holds.

The camera pans forward, as if it’s allowing the viewer to jump off the building past us. The rest of that shot will be completed via drone footage, to give the illusion of flying through the buildings and up toward the sky.

Even though the camera’s no longer on us, I don’t break the kiss.

“And cut!” Arnold yells. The crew breaks into clapping and cheering.

Breaking away from her lips, I press our foreheads together and smile down at my beautiful, brilliant girl. We did it. We finished filming our movie.

The sound of someone popping a champagne bottle pulls our attention sideways.

“That’s a wrap on filming for Darkness Rising!” someone shouts.

I pull Arnold into a tight hug, and he messes up my hair. We fucking did it. We filmed Starlight’s first superhero movie, and I can tell it’s going to be good.
