Chapter 17 #2

“Yeah I know but you’re uptight as fuck right now and I need you to relax. I thought for sure I was gonna have to be in there holding Ky’s hand when she woke up while Mel bailed your ass out on some real charges.”

“Fuck you. You better call Learah or Esha. Keep your hands free and clear of what’s mine.”

“Ol’ jealous ass.” Amir chuckled just as Mel walked up.

“I don’t know if he’ll press the issue, but considering that the judge threw the warrant out, I doubt it. How about you don’t do anything else for a while that has them looking at either one of you?”

“Damn, it’s like that?” Knowing that Ky was good allowed me the ability to unwind a little but Mel was not for the shits because she narrowed her eyes my way.

“It’s definitely like that. As much as I appreciate you funding my lifestyle, I’m no more willing to spend months sitting in a courtroom fighting a criminal case than you are.”

“Months? Shit, I thought you were better than that, Mel. Do we need to get a new attorney?”

I laughed right along with Amir when her eyes turned to slits, bouncing between the two of us. “Fuck you and you. Just remember that the next time some half ass detective tries to throw you in jail…” she moved closer, lowering her voice, “For a body I know has your name on it.”

“That’s fucked up. I’m pretty sure as my legal counsel, you should at the very least go with innocent until proven guilty. He didn’t prove a damn thing.” The look she delivered had me and Amir both throwing our hands up in surrender, laughing at the same time.

“Send my regards to Ky and try not to do anything illegal for the next forty-eight hours. I’m trying to spend the weekend with my man.” Mel turned on her heels to leave and Amir yelled behind her.

“Hold the fuck up, you have a man?” his dumb ass asked with a frown.

“Yes, I have a man, why?”

“Shit, the way you’re always trying to jump on one of our dicks as payment for your services, I didn’t think you had one.”

Mel grinned and shrugged. “I would never get serious about one of you. Ever, but there’s nothing wrong with sampling what you know is a life changer. Ain’t neither of y’all worth shit though.”

I couldn’t help but laugh, and hard. “Damn, so you really think I ain’t shit?” My brows lifted and she smirked.

“You might be now but your track record proves otherwise, so I’mma go with what I know. Have a good weekend and stay out of trouble.” She winked and walked away, with Amir grinning like a kid.

“We love you too with your fine, hoe ass.”

She shot him a bird without turning to our way again just before stepping onto the elevator.

“You better quit fucking with her before she blocks all our numbers,” I warned and Amir shrugged. “We got money, there’s ten more out there waiting in line to get their hands on it.”

“True but that doesn’t mean they’ll be willing to overlook a lot of the things Mel does.”

“Mr. Nour?” I looked up to find a nurse waiting and she continued when I gave her my attention, “If you’ll follow me, I’ll take you to Ms. Spencer’s room.”

Something in me settled at the thought of seeing Ky and knowing she was okay. This just further confirmed I was in this thing with her ten toes down. Had this gone any other way, my whole life would have been disrupted. She was my life and this only proved how serious that was.

“Bre, would you stop calling me every hour on the hour? I’m fine.”

“Sis, you almost died.”

Ky rolled her eyes and I chuckled, heading her way.

“I did not almost die. It wasn’t that serious. I mean it felt like it but I didn’t almost die. Stop saying that. You had our parents about to hop a flight talking crazy like that.”

“Because you could have. You can downplay it all you want but…”

I snatched Ky’s phone from her hand and responded, “But she didn’t and she’s in good hands. I’m taking great care of your sister, so you can talk to her tomorrow. Good night, Bre.”

“Asim, you better not hang up on…”

I did exactly that and ended the call, slipping Ky’s phone into my pocket.

It had been three days since her surgery and we hadn’t had a moment’s peace.

Her hospital room had a revolving door with visits from her sister, brother-in-law, and their kids and when they weren’t there, Amir and Learah were hanging out, followed by Kane and Esha.

Brielle even showed up with flowers, which I thought would be odd but her dude was there and he seemed cool.

Brielle didn’t pay me a bit of attention, which was that much better.

I was grateful we were able to share the same space with no issues.

Now that Ky was home, I shut down visits but couldn’t stop her sister from calling.

However, I understood. We shared the same sentiment.

The thought of losing Ky scared the shit out of both of us, so the hovering was necessary.

The only reason her parents didn’t catch a flight was because Ky begged them not to.

“She’s gonna punch you the next time she sees you. I wouldn’t be surprised if she was on her way here now.” Ky grinned, then I filled the space next to her, gently bringing her body into my side.

“If she wants to make that drive, it’s cool, but she isn’t getting in here.”

“Asim!” Ky raised her voice but wore a huge smile.

“What, man? Can I have some time alone with you? They act like I don’t know how to take care of you.”

“Well they’re wrong. You’re taking perfectly good care of me.”

“Yeah your ass is feeling better.”

Ky looked up at me with a pout. “Why you say that?”

“Because you’re back to stroking my ego, which means you want dick that you can’t have.” I winked at my baby who rolled her eyes. “Seriously though, how you feel?”

“I feel fine. Just a little sore but it’s not a big deal. You won’t let me do anything, like I’m going to break if I blink too hard.”

I chuckled at the thought and kissed her forehead.

“You might and I’m not taking that chance with the most important thing to me.

It’s my job to make sure you don’t. But I’m asking about all of you, not just physically.

” We shared a look that had her lowering her eyes.

We had yet to have a conversation about the fact that she had been pregnant outside of the medical complications that derived from it, and even then, that was with the doctor explaining how and why it happened.

“Can we not…”

I shifted enough to turn and face her, lifting her chin so our eyes leveled. “Ky, you were pregnant with our baby. One we weren’t expecting but that didn’t make it any less real. I think we need to at least talk it out.”

“There’s nothing to say; there is no baby.”

“But there was and it’s still a loss. I just want to see where your head is. It’s okay to feel something.”

“It’s not that I’m avoiding it or trying not to. I just…” She paused and inhaled a short breath before releasing it slowly.

“I don’t know how to feel. The possibility was there at the same time it was taken away. It’s hard to feel one way or another. I didn’t really get the chance to embrace the idea before I had to deal with it not happening. I just…”

“I know, me too. But either way, it has me thinking about what that means. I’m a little fucked up over it but I know we’ll get that chance again.”

The look she gave me expressed everything I knew she was thinking. “Hey, don’t do that. She said you’ll have a perfectly good chance in the future. We’ll start working on that in… shit, what they said, six weeks?”

Ky’s eyes rolled but she smiled. “Maybe not that soon.”

“Then we’ll just practice. I just don’t want you stressing over it, aight?”

“I won’t.”

“Yo, I’m serious. Don’t be in your head.”

“I’m not, damn. I thought you were supposed to be nice to me. This feels a little like badgering.”

I laughed under my breath but made sure she understood I was serious.

“I want you to feel comfortable dealing with however it makes you feel, today, tomorrow, or hell, even months from now and talk to me about it. It’s what I’m here for and I’m not doing my job if I allow you to get lost in this.

I want you to be okay, so if you are, then that’s straight too, but if you’re not, lean on me. That’s all I’m saying.”

Ky stared at me for a minute with her lip tucked between her teeth but she eventually smiled softly.

“I love you and thank you for loving me.”

“You’re welcome but that’s not something you have to thank me for, baby. That’s my responsibility and I don’t take that shit lightly.”
