Mini Bonus Chapter Three
Riggs is Ready
Back in June
Monday night at The Amber Howl, Riggs stared down at the new burger of the week and tried very hard not to feel personally attacked.
It was a great burger.
A fresh baked bun thanks to The Howl’s new baker – and his friend Luke’s mate, Valley – a thick burger patty, melty co-jack, and the best freaking honey bacon jam he’d ever had.
Riggs took another bite and sighed.
“You okay?” Luke asked across the table.
The den had gone to The Howl that night to celebrate Valley and Luke being official mates, meaning he’d marked her. Which meant that now Riggs and Colt were the only unmated males in their small den.
“I’m fine.”
“You look like someone took your favorite hammer,” Valley said.
“The burger’s good.”
“Why are you mad about that?” Tyler asked.
“I’m not mad, I’m just disappointed.” He looked at the bar and saw Sigh, the cook, with his mate Juliette. He whistled and Sigh walked over. “I thought I called dibs on the next burger, man.”
“Crap, I’m sorry, man,” Sigh said. “Luke met Valley during Audrey’s burger of the week, and then I was inspired to give one to them to congratulate them on their mating. I completely forgot I was going to make one in your honor.”
Juliette joined them. “Clearly the burgers are magic whether they’re named for someone or not.”
“True,” Valley said.
“It’s cool,” Riggs said.
“How about I name next week’s burger for you?” Sigh said. “What’s your favorite?”
Riggs opened his mouth to answer but stopped. He had plenty of favorites. Anything with cheese. Or fried onions. Or steak sauce.
Any burger Sigh made that needed two hands and lots of napkins? Riggs was in heaven.
But suddenly his favorite didn’t really seem like the point.
He looked down at the burger, and the bun that Valley had made earlier that day, and the honey bacon jam that dripped onto the plate. Sigh had made the burger to celebrate Luke and Valley.
Riggs had wanted a burger to get in on that burger mate magic, and he still did.
“You know what? I like everything you do. I’m just ready to find my mate. I’m not sure how things work here, maybe it’s the burgers, or the tavern, or the town changing. Whatever it is, I’m ready to find my mate.”
Sigh nodded. “I get that. I’ll do a great one for you next week.”
They walked away and Colt said, “You could have asked for a burger for me first. I’m alpha.”
“I called dibs, you snooze you lose.” He grinned at his friend. “Hopefully we’ll both find our mates soon.”
He took another bite of the Oh Honey. Sonofabitch, it was good.
He smiled.
Maybe this time next week, he’d be holding his mate.
He could hope.
The End.
For real this time! At least until Riggs’s book comes out… because the next bear is closer to his happily ever after than he thinks!
