Chapter 9
CHAPTER NINE
Knight
Ican feel Ven and Mack tensing behind me with each passing second, but I just keep my eyes locked on the sheriff.
We knew we’d be stopped coming into Widows Peak—everyone is. This isn’t somewhere you can wander into by accident.
The sheriff—Syrus, I think he said his name was—doesn’t turn his back to us, but he makes sure his lips aren’t facing us as he speaks into the phone.
Smart man.
I’m a damn excellent lip reader. Most people don’t think about hiding their lips when they’re far enough away that they can’t be overheard.
He didn’t look too happy when we rode up on our bikes, and I’m sure only part of that is due to our size.
The three of us are big dudes, definitely what everyone would assume are alphas. In Ven’s and Mack’s cases, they’d be right.
We expected me to be an alpha, too, so when I designated as an omega, we’d all been shocked.
We were less shocked by the fact that they’re my scent matches. Even if they hadn’t been, we still would’ve been a pack. We grew up together in the Sinner’s Pride MC.
My dad is the president, while both of Ven’s and Mack’s dads are enforcers. As soon as I was of age and the spot was available, my dad offered me the VP spot. He doesn’t care that I’m an omega, and he expects me to be president one day.
I’m not against the idea, but I’m not sure if I want to make the MC my entire life like our dads did. The reason we were raised in the MC is that all three of our moms are out of the picture. We stopped asking about them when we were young. I’m not sure our dads even remember much about them.
That should be a little sad, but it’s the only life I’ve ever known. I know it’s been harder on my sister than me. She could’ve done with having a mom around.
Maybe then we wouldn’t be in this situation, driving halfway across the country to meet with a lawyer who specializes in sticky omega legal cases.
Dad hadn’t wanted me to involve a civilian, but what he’s doing isn’t working. We need help.
This is a last-ditch effort. If Luna Salazar doesn’t take our case, I don’t know what we’ll do.
What I’ll do.
She’s already been in his grasp for far too long.
“What’s taking so long?” Vengeance hisses from beneath his helmet. I don’t even have to look at him to know his nearly black eyes are glaring at the sheriff.
“Calm down. I told you they don’t let just anyone into Widows Peak. We’re lucky we got an appointment with her.” I chuckle. “She doesn’t take just any case. Not that she’s officially taken ours.”
Mack grunts. “Don’t remind me, omega. I can’t believe we drove for days to meet with a lawyer you haven’t even spoken to. Her assistant set up the appointment. For all we know, she’s going to send us packing the minute we walk in there.”
He’s not wrong. It’s completely possible that she won’t take the case, but from everything I’ve heard about her, she doesn’t like to turn down an omega in trouble.
And Stacia is in some serious trouble—the life or death kind.
Syrus hangs up his phone, tossing it into his vehicle before strolling back toward us. “It seems you are on Ms. Salazar’s schedule.”
“Excellent. Does that mean we can be on our way?” Ven asks. I know he’s uncomfortable coming into a town where he isn’t exactly welcome because of his designation, but I need my hotheaded alpha to hold it together for a little bit longer.
“Not so fast.” Syrus shakes his head, handing me back our IDs.
Rather than hand them back to the guys, I slip them into my cut.
“I need you to understand that you’re only being allowed into Widows Peak because you have an appointment with Luna.
We don’t want or need any trouble in this town.
This is a safe haven for omegas and betas, who need a place to escape.
We take care of our own, which means there will be eyes on you the entire time you’re in town.
If you’re planning to cause any trouble, I’d suggest you turn your bikes around and head right back the way you came. ”
Ven growls, and I can feel Mack stiffening behind me. I lift my hand, warning them to chill out.
“We understand, Sheriff. We’re only here because my sister is in trouble, and Luna Salazar is our last hope.” There’s no reason to hide the truth from him. With how small this place is, I’m sure he’d find out shortly, anyway. “We’re not here to cause problems for anyone.”
He purses his lips, clearly not believing me, but I don’t really think I have a chance of convincing him otherwise.
And I get it, the town’s safety is this beta’s priority. It’s no different from how we are about the compound back home in Orlando.
“Fine. She’s waiting for you at her office. It’s the first building you’ll come to—you can’t miss it.” I can tell he doesn’t want to let us into his town, but he begrudgingly steps back to allow us access.
I nod at my guys and pull back onto the road.
It doesn’t take us long to reach her office, and we park outside. I can already feel eyes on us, and I don’t think it’s just the sheriff, who followed us into town.
We’re new to town, and that makes them suspicious. We just need to not give them a reason to fear us—easier said than done, sometimes.
I climb off my bike and pull my helmet off, shaking out my red hair. We stopped in the next town over last night, so at least we’re clean. I run a hand through my hair as Ven and Mack join me.
The three of us make an imposing picture—all three of us over six feet tall.
I’m the shortest at six foot one, but my wide shoulders and muscled physique hide my omega designation well.
Vengeance is two inches taller than me, but his build is slimmer.
He’s all lithe muscle and speed. Mack is the biggest of us at six foot six and built like a Mack truck—hence his road name being Mack.
Well, that and the fact that his real name is Mackenzie.
“Can we get this over with?” Ven asks, pulling his shoulder-length black hair out of its ponytail and shaking it out. Within seconds, he has it tied up again—a nervous tic of his.
I lay my hand on his shoulder, squeezing lightly. “I know it’s asking a lot, but do you think you can relax? Even just a little?”
He rolls his eyes. “Yeah, sure. I’ll just relax when I can feel every eye in town on us. Easy peasy.”
“Don’t be a dick, Ven.” Mack smacks the back of his head.
“But he’s so good at it, Mack.” I shoot him a grin that disappears almost as fast as it appeared.
I shouldn’t be smiling when my sister is trapped at that asshole’s compound.
How can I enjoy my life when I have no idea the hell she’s going through right now?
Feeling my mood shift, my alphas surround me, holding me between them as their purrs kick up.
As much as I’d love to stand here and allow them to calm my turmoil, we don’t have time for this.
“I love you both, but we need to get inside.”
Ven presses a kiss to the side of my head. “I’m sorry for being a dick, baby boy.”
“It’s fine. We’re fine. I’m just stressed out.”
Mack chuckles. “Don’t we know it? We are too. Let’s see what the lawyer has to say and go from there, okay?”
“Yeah, okay.” What the hell else am I going to say as I allow them to lead me into her building.
