Chapter 19

CHAPTER NINETEEN

Luna

My eyes find Knight’s, and I know it’s his scent that hit me like a truck.

“You’re my scent match?” Knight asks, eyes flicking between me and Prescott. “Both of you?”

And this right here is why I require new clients to use scent blockers. The last thing I want or need in my life is a gods damned scent match, and an omega at that?

Knight’s scent is the only unknown scent assaulting my nose right now, so I’m fairly certain they’re still on scent blockers.

But I still refuse to look at them because I’m not using any, and I didn’t use the descenting spray before leaving the office.

What are the chances of Knight being my scent match and his alphas not?

Slim to none.

How fucking stupid can I be?

Prescott’s hand tightens on my shoulder, and I force myself to meet his gaze. The question is clear in his eyes.

You, too?

I incline my head, confirming what I wish wasn’t true.

I was already planning to take their case, but there’s no way I can change my mind now.

A fucking scent match?

Seriously, fate? What the hell did I ever do to you?

“I guess it’s good that we ran into you,” I say, avoiding Knight’s gaze. “It saves me from making a phone call.”

He frowns. “Seriously? You’re just going to ignore the fact that we’re scent—”

“Nope. We’re not doing this. Not here and not now.

” I suck in a breath as I feel panic building.

“Maybe not ever, in fact. But what we can talk about is your case. I thought about it, and I’m going to take it.

I can’t make any guarantees about the outcome, but I’ll do my damnedest to get her free of him.

No one deserves to be stuck with someone like him. ”

I do a terrible job of keeping the vehemence out of my voice, and I wonder where my ice queen persona has disappeared to. It would be ever so helpful right now.

“That’s great news.” Knight drops into the seat across from us, his eyes lingering on where Prescott’s hand rests on my shoulder. “So the two of you—”

“Another thing we’re not discussing,” I cut him off. “We were just finishing up lunch. Why don’t we leave you to yours, and when you’re done, you can call the office and Prescott will set up an appointment for tomorrow?”

I feel, more than see, Ven and Mack move closer, and I hold up my hand. Without looking at them, I tell them, “Stay over there. Please.”

Knight frowns as he watches me. “Our lunch can wait. We can totally have the meeting now.”

“Yeah, that’s not happening.” I clear my throat, lacing my hands together to hide the fact that they’re shaking.

“When we have our meeting, I need you to use descenting spray if you’re not going to take the blockers.

I don’t have a problem with that. I know how blockers can affect omegas.

But your alphas need to continue on the blockers.

If I catch even a hint of a scent off any of you, then I’ll drop your case. ”

Lies. All lies.

Okay, that’s definitely a lie, but they don’t know that.

Knight nods slowly, Prescott’s hand squeezing my shoulder again.

I glance up at him, seeing the questions in his eyes. The two of us are going to have to have a conversation, but we’re not having it here. Not with half the town watching our every move. Not with the three of them here.

Fuck. I need to get the hell out of here.

“We can agree to that. I have some spray in our room, so we can head there and meet you at your office.”

What doesn’t he understand about the fact that I don’t want him in my office today?

It’s not like I can just come out and say that I don’t want them anywhere near me now that I know what he smells like.

Thank fuck Ven and Mack are still using blockers.

If they’re also my scent matches—

No. No. No.

I can’t think about that.

Guilt roils in my stomach, and I lift a hand to press against the sudden bite of nausea.

I know I was thinking how Christian would want me to move on today, but scent matches? Really?

I’m not ready for this.

I’m barely ready to attempt dating Prescott, and I’ve known the man for six years.

“We have quite a bit of work that we need to do before we’re ready to meet,” I finally say with a tight smile. “We need to get more information on Fabian and your sister. I need to research cases that may set precedents for your sister’s case.”

He nods, a half-smile on his lips. “Well, who better to help you with research on Stacia than her twin?”

My stomach drops because he’s right. It would be helpful to question him about his sister, but I really need to get away from his scent.

“Fine,” I bite out. “You—and only you—may come to the office after you’ve used the descenting spray. But eat your lunch first. That’ll give Prescott and me a chance to get things set up.”

“Oh, do you have more people joining you?” Alyssa appears, holding our check. “I thought you might want this, but if you’re not ready—”

“We’re ready.” I reach over Prescott to snatch the check from her. I go to grab my purse so I can pay, but Prescott stops me as he pulls his card out and hands it to her.

“Thank you, Alyssa. We’ll meet you at the hostess stand,” he says briskly. “We’re in a bit of a hurry.”

Alyssa nods rapidly, reminding me of a bobblehead. “Of course. I’ll be right there.”

As soon as she steps back, Prescott stands and helps me out of the booth. I keep my attention on Knight. “Give us at least an hour, okay?”

“Sure, Luna. I’ll see you in an hour.” He looks as if he wants to say more, but he snaps his mouth shut.

I practically shove Prescott to the front of the diner, hiding behind him so I don’t have to look at Ven or Mack. We only stop long enough for him to sign the credit card slip before I’m pushing him out the door.

“Luna?”

“Not here.” I shake my head, hand finding his as I start back toward the office. “Not until we’re at the office.”

Holding his hand calms me, and by the time we make it to the office, my hands have finally stopped shaking. Neither of us says anything as I unlock the door. As soon as we’re inside, I close and lock the door behind us.

I lay my head on it and suck in a deep breath before releasing it.

“Luna?”

I spin around slowly, keeping my back against the door as I meet his gaze. “I’m sorry I rushed you out. You might have wanted to talk to your scent match.”

“Our scent match,” he corrects with a sigh. “But that’s not important. You’re upset.”

“How is he even my scent match? We’re both omegas?” I slam my palms against the door. “I didn’t need this right now. Not on top of this Fabian bullshit. Not on top of realizing how I feel about you. It’s too damn much.”

He hums. “You’re panicking.”

“Of course I’m fucking panicking. Why aren’t you? We’re scent-matched to the same omega. If his alphas are his scent matches, then we’re probably scent-matched to them too. I don’t want scent matches, Pres. I don’t even want alphas.”

“Why not?”

“Why not? Are you serious right now? I told you what happened to the last alpha I was involved with! Being with another alpha would feel like I’m replacing him.

” I step away from the door, throwing my hands in the air.

“Not to mention, who the hell knows what my brother will do when he finds out I’m alive and have scent matches. For all I know, he’ll kill all of you.”

Prescott clears his throat. “I can tell you’re upset, Luna, but I’m going to need you to try that again in English.”

I spin on him with a frown before sighing.

I must’ve switched to Spanish somewhere in there. It doesn’t happen often, but if I get worked up enough, I don’t even realize I’ve changed languages.

Taking a deep breath, I sink onto the couch in the waiting room and lay my head in my hands. When Prescott joins me, I repeat my concerns calmly and most definitely in English.

“Is that what was running through your head the entire time we were sitting there?”

“That and how fucking delicious Knight smelled. It took a hell of a lot of self-restraint not to crawl under the table and pull his cock out to see if he tastes as good as he smells.”

Prescott chokes. “I’m glad I wasn’t the only one.”

I glance up at him, and the second our eyes meet, we both burst out laughing.

“I’m sorry for freaking out,” I say when we finally stop.

“Don’t apologize for that. I’m always here for you—especially when you’re freaking out.” He wraps his arm around my shoulders and tugs me against his side before pressing a kiss to my head. “So, we share a scent match.”

“We do. Possibly more than one. We know I’m freaking out, but how are you?”

He hums. “Surprised. Confused. Hard as fuck. Knight smelled amazing, but the two of you together? Holy shit, Luna. I thought I was going to come in my pants.”

“Stop it.” I slap his chest as I smile. “Be serious.”

“I am being serious. It’s a lot—especially since we don’t know about Ven and Mack. How did we end up with a biker scent match?”

“Fuck if I know. Apparently fate hates me.”

He snickers. “Or loves you. We’ll figure this out, Lu. No matter what, it’s you and me.”

“Lu?” I ask, cocking my eyebrows.

“Do you hate it?”

I shake my head. “Not at all. I just haven’t had anyone shorten my new name. I like it.”

“Good.” He leans in to kiss me. “Why don’t I grab the descenting spray for both of us? Knight’s already scented us, but there’s no reason to distract each other.”

“Yeah, that’s a good idea. I’m just going to splash some water on my face, then fix my makeup since that’s going to wreck it.”

He nods. “And I’ll make you a latte.”

“You’re a fucking godsend, Pres.” I give him another kiss before pushing to my feet. “I’ll be right back.”

“I’ll be waiting.”

A smile blooms as I stare at him for a moment before heading for the bathroom.

Damn this man, but he sure does make me smile.
