19. Nikolai
NIKOLAI
The industrial edge of the city is quiet at this hour. Long stretches of darkened warehouses and empty lots sit under sparse sodium lights that leave more shadow than illumination.
Nikolai watches the GPS count down the final distance, then speaks without raising his voice.
“Pull over here. One block short.”
“Got it,” Theo replies.
Theo eases the town car to the curb and keeps the engine running. The low idle is the only sound inside the cabin. Streetlight cuts across the dashboard and catches the edge of the platinum bracelet on his wrist. Nikolai turns in the seat to face the boy fully.
“If I go down,” Nikolai says, each word measured and final. “If I go down… you run. You do not look back. You do not try to help. You disappear exactly the way you were trained to, and you stay gone until it is safe.”
Theo’s jaw tightens. “That won’t happen.”
“Promise me,” Nikolai demands. “Promise me or I’ll have you spanking yourself red raw on the street right now.”
“Don’t tempt me,” Theo says, a knowing look in his eyes.
Theo holds Nikolai’s gaze for a long second, the defiance and the devotion warring visibly behind his eyes. Then he nods once.
“I promise. I would never disobey my Daddy.”
The words land with quiet force. Nikolai leans across the console and kisses him.
The contact is deep and unhurried despite the clock running against them.
Adrenaline sharpens every sensation until the taste of him, the soft sound he makes, the way Theo’s fingers curl into the front of his shirt all feel heightened and necessary.
When Nikolai finally breaks the kiss he rests his forehead against the boy for one additional breath.
“You keep Tracker talking,” Nikolai tells him. “Whatever they want to hear, whatever reassurance or detail they demand, you give them enough to hold their attention. You do not move until I send the signal that we are ready to strike.”
Theo’s voice is steady. “What will the signal be?”
“You’ll know it when it happens.”
Theo nods again, accepting the answer without further question. Nikolai reaches for the door handle, then pauses.
“Drive back one full block,” Nikolai instructs. “Then approach the warehouse from the opposite side. If Tracker or the Rossinis have people already in the area, the change of direction may throw their timing off long enough to matter.”
With that, Nikolai steps out onto the quiet pavement.
The night air is cool against his face. He closes the door with a soft, solid thunk and stands motionless while Theo executes the maneuver exactly as instructed: reversing, turning, disappearing around the far corner to begin the longer approach.
Only when the taillights vanish does Nikolai allow himself a single deep breath. The encrypted phone is already in his hand. He types the same short message to both Maxim and Xander.
NIKOLAI: Time. Move slowly. Use the shadows. Be ready to let hell break loose the moment the signal is given.
Nikolai sends the message, slips the phone away, and begins walking toward the warehouse from his own planned angle. The weight of the pistol under his jacket is familiar and comforting.
Somewhere ahead Theo is driving into the mouth of the trap they have deliberately chosen to spring. Somewhere in the surrounding dark Nikolai’s men and Maxim’s are already sliding into position like pieces on a board that has finally been set.
Nikolai keeps to the deepest shadows, every sense stretched tight, and advances.
The next few minutes will decide whether the boy he has claimed survives the night—and whether the Rossini threat is finally put down for good.
It’s all or nothing.
And that’s the only way Nikolai knows how to play it.
Nikolai and Xander are pressed into the deep shadow of a loading bay less than twenty meters from the warehouse’s side entrance.
The concrete is cold against Nikolai’s shoulder.
From this angle he has a clear line of sight to the open stretch of cracked asphalt where Theo stands alone, hands visible, posture carefully non-threatening.
The tiny pistol is still hidden in Theo’s sock, and Nikolai allows himself a private chuckle as he recalls his shock at how good he was at the gun range.
If he wasn’t my boy I’d hire him as an assassin…
Further back, Maxim and his chosen men occupy a second set of shadows, equally still, equally ready.
Xander’s voice is barely a breath. “Anything you need from me?”
Nikolai keeps his eyes on Theo. “If I go down, you take the family. You rule it with an iron fist. No hesitation, no soft edges.”
Xander is silent for a second. Then…
“I’ll do it. But I know it won’t come to that.”
They clasp hands once—brief, hard, the mutual respect of two men who have already buried too many of their own. The contact lasts only a heartbeat before both return their attention to the warehouse.
A dark sedan turns the corner and rolls to a stop directly beside Theo. The rear door opens. Before the boy can step back, two pairs of hands yank him inside. The door slams.
“Fuck!” Nikolai roars. “Go-go-go!”
Nikolai and Xander move at the same instant. Their first shots are precise and low—both front tires, then the rear. The sedan lurches and settles hard on its rims.
Maxim’s men materialize from the deeper dark, weapons up, forming a tightening ring around the disabled vehicle.
Nikolai’s voice cuts across the lot, cold and carrying. “Release the boy. Now.”
A man’s voice answers from inside the car, calm and almost conversational. “I want safe passage out of here. Guarantee it and he’s yours.”
“Agreed,” Nikolai calls back.
“Don’t fuck me around,” the voice hollers. “I’ll kill this motherfucking boy. I’ll do it. I’m just a damn accountant, just like him. I make moves. I take the money. That’s all. I didn’t ask for this shit. Take the boy. Let me fucking run.”
“I said I agreed,” Nikolai growls. “Release Theo!”
The rear door opens again. Theo is pushed out hard enough that he stumbles, a black suitcase tumbling after him. He hits the ground, rolls, and comes up in a low crouch just as a second wave of vehicles… Rossini cars, no question… screams into the lot from two directions at once.
The night explodes into gunfire.
Muzzle flashes strobe across the concrete. Nikolai drops behind the nearest cover and returns fire in controlled pairs.
In the chaos he sees Theo move with sudden, lethal clarity…
Nikolai watches as the tiny pistol is already in Theo’s hand. He puts two rounds through the open rear window of the sedan; the man who had spoken—Tracker, or whoever wore the name—jerks as blood splatters onto the windscreen and windows.
Then Theos seizes the suitcase, drags it with him, and takes cover behind a concrete barrier. For one fractured second Nikolai wonders if Theo will simply run—money in hand, every reason to disappear.
Nikolai would not entirely blame Theo.
But his boy does not run.
Instead Theo rises just high enough to brace the little pistol and begins firing on the Rossini gunmen with the same clean speed and accuracy he showed at the range.
Each shot is deliberate.
One attacker drops.
Another spins and falls.
Nikolai feels a fierce, unexpected surge of pride cut through the battle haze. The combined weight of Nikolai’s men and Maxim’s gradually turns the fight. The Rossini shooters are better equipped for an ambush than for a sustained, two-sided engagement.
Within minutes the lot falls silent except for the ringing in every ear and the low groans of the wounded.
The remaining Rossini vehicles sit empty or burning.
Nikolai crosses the open ground in five long strides and pulls Theo into his arms. He is breathing hard, the suitcase still locked in one hand, the tiny pistol in the other.
For a moment neither of them speaks.
Maxim’s voice cuts in, urgent and already moving.
“No time to waste,” Maxim barks. “I have a full squad waiting outside the Rossini stronghold. We finish this tonight. Full assault. End them for good.”
Nikolai keeps one arm around Theo and looks down at him.
“Go home,” Nikolai says. “Wait for me there.”
Theo shakes his head once, eyes clear and certain. “I’ve come this far. I’m not turning back now.” He releases the suitcase, reaches for the nearest fallen automatic rifle, checks the magazine with practiced hands, and locks and loads it in a single clean motion.
The weapon looks too large for Theo’s frame, yet he holds it as if it has always belonged there.
Nikolai studies Theo for one additional second: his boy, his Little, the person who just killed the man who hired him and is now ready to walk into a full-scale assault at his side, then gives a single nod.
“Stay close to me,” Nikolai says.
Together they turn toward the waiting vehicles.
This night is far from over yet.
The storming of the Rossini residence unfolds in controlled, brutal waves.
Nikolai moves room by room beside Theo, the automatic rifle steady in his hands, his own weapon covering the angles Theo cannot.
Maxim’s men and Nikolai’s soldiers clear the corridors with practiced efficiency: short bursts of fire, shouted commands, the heavy thud of bodies hitting marble and hardwood.
The once-opulent house is being dismantled from the inside out.
Paintings are shattered, chandeliers crash down, and the remaining Rossini resistance collapses under the sheer weight of the assault.
There is no turning back for them now. The clan that has bled his territory for months is being erased in a single night.
Theo’s voice cuts through the gunfire, sharp and focused.
“Three senior-looking enemy targets. Back exit!” Theo points, his eyes laser focused.
Nikolai sees them at the same moment: three older men in expensive coats, moving fast through the rear French doors toward the dark expanse of the formal garden.
Nikolai signals with two fingers. Theo stays glued to his side as they pursue, Maxim close behind, the three of them cutting through the chaos with singular purpose.
Outside, the night air is thick with the smell of cordite and torn earth. A helicopter sits on the rear lawn, rotors already spinning up, its side door open and waiting.
The three Rossini bosses sprint across the grass, desperation giving them speed. Nikolai does not waste breath on orders...
“One each,” Nikolai says. He raises his rifle and fires. The first man drops mid-stride.
Theo’s shot follows a fraction of a second later—clean, center mass—and the second boss crumples.
Maxim’s bullet takes the third just as the man reaches for the helicopter skid. The aircraft lifts a meter off the ground, then the pilot sees the bodies and aborts, swinging away into the dark rather than wait for the same fate.
Nikolai, Theo, and Maxim walk forward together across the ruined lawn. The three fallen men are still breathing, barely.
There is no speech, no final exchange of threats.
Each of them delivers the finishing shot with cold precision.
The war against the Rossini leadership ends in the space of three heartbeats. Silence settles over the garden, broken only by the distant crackle of remaining pockets of resistance inside the house being extinguished.
Maxim lowers his weapon and turns to Nikolai. He extends a hand…
“I’m looking forward to carving up the Rossini territory between us.”
Nikolai takes the offered hand, grip firm. “I’m looking forward to a long and prosperous arrangement.”
The alliance is sealed in the simplest possible currency: mutual victory and mutual interest.
Nikolai turns to Theo. The automatic rifle hangs at the boy’s side. There is blood spatter on his cheek and a fierce, living light in his eyes. Nikolai pulls his darling boy into his arms, heedless of the weapons and the carnage around them.
Theo rises onto his toes to meet his Daddy.
“I love you,” Nikolai tells him, the words raw and certain in the aftermath. “I want this. I want us. Forever.”
“I love you too,” Theo answers, voice steady against his chest. “Forever.”
Xander appears at the edge of the garden, phone in hand, expression urgent.
“Time to leave,” Xander urges. “My source at the city cops says he can’t postpone their dispatch any longer. Five minutes, maybe less.”
No one argues.
The remaining men are already melting back toward the waiting vehicles, weapons secured, the house left burning behind them.
Nikolai keeps Theo’s hand locked in his as they move. The black night air feels cleaner somehow.
Tracker is dead. The Rossini clan is finished. The boy who once came to destroy Nikolai walks at his side as his equal and his own.
Nikolai has everything he needs to ensure that his reign will continue long into the night and for many more years to come.
