CHAPTER 12
The estate gates slammed shut before midnight.
One after another, the guards moved through the house, checking doors, windows, corridors, and servants' quarters. The sudden activity had stripped the Moretti residence of its usual quiet elegance. Even the portraits seemed to watch the people moving beneath them.
Elara stood in the entrance hall with her arms folded.
Alessandro approached.
"You should be upstairs."
She gave him a flat look.
"Someone has been following me upstairs."
He stopped.
For once, he had no answer.
Dante walked past them toward the security room.
"Everyone stays inside until we know who accessed the archive."
Luca followed with a tablet in hand.
"Nobody has left through the main gates."
"Then someone is still here," Dante said.
Elara followed.
Dante glanced back.
"Where are you going?"
"With you."
"This isn't a game."
"I know."
She kept walking.
Dante stared at her for a moment, then looked at Alessandro.
Alessandro simply said, "Let her come."
Inside the security room, the head of household security stood beside three guards. Luca pulled up the estate's access records.
"Start with the blackout," he said.
A guard pointed to the screen.
"Three minutes and forty-two seconds."
"Why?"
"We thought the system had been damaged."
Luca shook his head.
"It wasn't damaged."
He enlarged the record.
"The cameras were deliberately disabled."
Dante leaned over his shoulder.
"Can you tell who did it?"
"Not yet."
Alessandro turned to the household staff gathered near the door.
"Where were you?"
One servant stepped forward.
"I was in the kitchen."
"What time?"
"Just before midnight."
Luca checked the records.
"You left the kitchen at eleven fifty-seven."
The servant swallowed.
"I went for linens."
"At midnight?" Dante asked.
"They were needed upstairs."
"Which room?"
She hesitated.
Elara noticed.
"Which room?"
The woman looked at her.
"Miss Vesperi's."
Elara's expression hardened.
"I didn't ask for linens."
The servant's face paled.
Dante moved forward.
"Who sent you?"
"No one."
"Try again."
Alessandro raised a hand.
"Enough."
Dante turned.
"She's lying."
"Maybe."
Alessandro looked at the servant.
"Until we have proof, nobody is accused."
Elara studied him.
That was not the man who had first locked her away.
He was still commanding, but there was restraint now.
She stepped closer.
"You keep telling me to stay safe."
"I mean it."
"Then stop treating me like I can't help."
His eyes held hers.
"I don't think you're helpless."
"Then prove it."
A quiet moment passed.
Alessandro nodded.
"Stay beside me."
The words carried more weight than an order.
Elara followed him.
Luca suddenly straightened.
"Wait."
Everyone turned.
He pointed to the security record.
"The cameras weren't disabled to hide an escape."
Dante frowned.
"Then why?"
Luca looked toward the library.
"To hide someone searching for something."
Elara felt a chill move through her.
The intruder had not been trying to get out.
They had been looking for something inside the house.
Something important enough to risk being caught.
And she had a feeling she already knew what it was.
The hidden passage smelled of old stone and extinguished candles.
Luca led the way.
Alessandro stayed close to Elara, while Dante brought up the rear.
The small room beneath the library looked different now that they knew someone had been using it.
A desk stood against the wall.
Maps covered one side.
Old records filled another.
There were photographs of the three families, lists of names, dates, and handwritten notes.
Luca picked up a sheet.
"These aren't recent."
Elara moved beside him.
"How old?"
"Some are decades old."
She reached for another page.
Then she froze.
The handwriting was unmistakable.
Her father's.
"It was his."
Alessandro came closer.
"Are you certain?"
Elara looked at him.
"I'd know it anywhere."
She ran her fingers just above the page.
The words described the original agreement between the Morettis, Romanos, and De Santises.
But the Vesperi name appeared alongside theirs.
Again.
And again.
Elara looked up.
"My father wasn't investigating the families."
Luca read over her shoulder.
"No."
"He was working with them."
Alessandro's expression tightened.
"I knew he had connections. I didn't know this."
Elara studied him.
"Not even this?"
"No."
For the first time, she believed him.
Luca continued searching.
He found a narrow strip of paper tucked beneath the desk.
The ledger must never remain in the house.
Dante read it.
"Which ledger?"
Nobody answered.
They searched every drawer.
Nothing.
Luca checked the shelves.
Nothing.
He crouched beside a cabinet.
Nothing.
Then he looked at the empty space beneath the desk.
"Someone already took it."
Dante frowned.
"Then why leave everything else?"
"Because they weren't finished."
Elara moved toward the wall.
A map had been pinned there.
One mark caught her attention.
"The library."
Luca joined her.
"What about it?"
She pointed.
"This symbol."
The same old design had appeared on the seal her father left behind.
Alessandro examined the stone beneath the bookshelf.
"There's a mechanism."
Dante pressed it.
Nothing.
Luca tried another section.
Nothing.
Elara stared at the symbol.
Then she removed the seal from around her neck.
"Move."
She pressed it against the carved stone.
A faint click sounded.
The bookshelf shifted.
Everyone went still.
Dante pushed it farther.
A narrow cavity appeared behind it.
But there was no ledger.
Only a dark smear across the stone.
Dante touched it.
He looked at his fingers.
Blood.
Fresh.
"Someone was hurt here."
Elara's stomach tightened.
The ledger might be missing.
But whoever took it had not left cleanly.
The blood trail disappeared beneath the edge of the hidden passage.
Luca followed it with a flashlight.
"It goes farther."
Dante crouched beside a torn piece of fabric.
He held it up.
"Security uniform."
Alessandro's expression hardened.
"Find the guard."
They returned upstairs.
The senior guard who had been questioned earlier was gone.
Dante's hand tightened around the fabric.
"He's our man."
Elara shook her head.
"We don't know that."
"He disappeared."
"After someone stole his access code."
"Convenient."
"Exactly."
Dante looked at her.
"You keep defending people."
"I'm not defending him. I'm reminding you that someone wants us to blame the wrong person."
Luca gave a small smile.
"She's right."
Dante glared at him.
"Don't encourage her."
Elara smiled.
"Too late."
They returned below.
The passage narrowed until they had to walk single file.
Elara's shoe caught on a loose stone.
She stumbled.
Alessandro caught her before she fell.
His arm tightened around her waist.
"You hurt?"
"No."
He didn't immediately let go.
Neither spoke.
His gray eyes searched her face.
Dante cleared his throat.
"We have a missing guard."
Luca added, "And a missing ledger."
Alessandro released her.
Elara looked up at him.
"Thank you."
His gaze lingered for another heartbeat.
Then he turned away.
Luca stopped beside an old metal cabinet.
"Found something."
Inside were dozens of records.
He spread the oldest documents across the stone table.
The first agreement was written in faded ink.
Three family names appeared at the top.
Moretti.
Romano.
De Santis.
Then another.
Vesperi.
Elara stared.
"My father was one of them."
Luca nodded.
"Not an outsider."
She touched the page.
"One of the founders."
Alessandro read the document in silence.
Dante's expression changed.
Everything they had been taught about Matteo Vesperi was beginning to collapse.
A metallic crash echoed through the passage.
Everyone turned.
Then came a scream.
Dante reached for his weapon.
Alessandro pulled Elara behind him.
Luca extinguished the flashlight.
Darkness swallowed the passage.
"Someone found us," he whispered.
A second sound followed.
Closer this time.
A footstep.
Then another.
Elara could hear her own breathing.
Alessandro's hand found hers in the darkness.
"Stay behind me."
She squeezed his fingers.
"Not this time."
He turned toward her.
Before he could answer, a shadow moved at the end of the passage.
Dante stepped forward.
The chase had begun.
The figure rushed toward the archive.
Dante intercepted him.
They collided hard enough to send a stack of papers flying.
Alessandro pushed Elara behind a stone pillar.
"Stay there."
The attacker swung at Dante.
Dante ducked and struck back.
Luca moved toward the opposite passage, searching for another exit.
The attacker broke away.
His eyes went straight toward the cabinet containing the old records.
Elara saw it.
"He isn't after us."
Alessandro looked at her.
"What?"
"He's looking for something."
She pointed.
"The ledger."
The attacker heard her.
His head turned.
Then he charged toward her.
"Elara!"
Alessandro reached him first.
They slammed against the wall.
Dante joined the struggle.
The attacker fought with desperate strength, but he was outnumbered.
He broke free and disappeared into the narrow passage.
Dante ran after him.
"Stop!"
The footsteps faded.
Then silence.
Elara turned toward the archive entrance.
A security employee lay against the wall, injured.
She hurried to him.
"Can you hear me?"
His eyes opened.
"He knew..."
"Who?"
"The house."
Elara leaned closer.
"Who was he?"
"I couldn't see his face."
He struggled for breath.
"He knew the old passage."
Alessandro crouched beside Elara.
"Can you identify him?"
The man shook his head.
"No."
Elara looked at Alessandro.
"You could have been killed."
She rose.
"So could you."
"You shouldn't have moved toward him."
"He was going for the records."
"You could have let us handle it."
"I did let you handle it."
Her eyes flashed.
"Until I realized what he wanted."
Alessandro's jaw tightened.
"You can't keep doing this."
"And you can't keep ordering me to stand still."
For a moment, neither moved.
The fear beneath their anger was obvious.
Dante looked between them.
Luca did the same.
Elara was no longer merely someone they protected.
She was becoming part of the fight.
A low grinding sound interrupted them.
The old library floor shifted overhead.
Luca looked up.
"That wasn't caused by the fight."
Alessandro turned.
"Then what opened it?"
Elara looked down.
Her fingers still held the family seal.
"The seal."
They rushed upstairs.
The floor beneath the library had moved.
A narrow section of stone had dropped several inches.
Luca crouched beside it.
"There's something underneath."
Dante removed the loose stone.
A dark cavity appeared.
Cold air rose from below.
Elara stared into it.
Her father's secrets had just opened another door.
The hidden chamber was barely large enough for the four of them.
At its center sat a black leather ledger.
It rested inside a shallow stone compartment.
No dust covered its surface.
Someone had handled it recently.
Elara reached toward it.
Alessandro caught her wrist.
"Wait."
She looked at him.
"Why?"
"We don't know what's inside."
"I do."
His eyes narrowed.
"How?"
She looked at the ledger.
"My father wanted me to find it."
Luca examined the cover.
"There are no markings."
Dante ran his fingers over the edge.
"It's locked."
Elara removed the family seal from her neck.
She placed it against the small indentation.
A click sounded.
The lock released.
The ledger opened.
The first pages contained names, dates, agreements, and signatures.
Moretti.
Romano.
De Santis.
Then one name appeared alone.
Vesperi.
Elara stopped breathing for a moment.
"My father."
Luca turned the page.
A handwritten entry filled the center.
Matteo Vesperi — Keeper of the original agreement.
Alessandro stared.
"He wasn't the traitor."
"No," Elara whispered.
Dante turned another page.
The following section had been torn away.
Luca touched the ragged edge.
"Recently."
Elara looked at the three men.
"Someone found this before us."
Alessandro nodded.
"And they knew exactly what they wanted."
A folded note slipped from between the pages.
Elara caught it.
She opened it.
One sentence.
If Elara finds this ledger, the families have already begun to fall.
Her eyes lifted.
"Who wrote this?"
No one answered.
Footsteps sounded above them.
Slow.
Measured.
Someone was walking through the library.
Dante reached for his weapon.
Alessandro stepped in front of Elara.
Luca closed the ledger.
The footsteps stopped.
Silence.
Then the library door opened.
Someone had entered the room above.
Elara gripped Alessandro's arm.
The black ledger remained open between them.
Luca suddenly noticed another entry beneath Matteo's name.
He turned the page toward the light.
A name appeared.
Vittorio Malaspina.
Beside it, written in Matteo's hand:
The man who knows where the truth is buried.
Elara stared at the words.
Vittorio.
A man none of them had expected to find there.
A man who had spent years moving among Bellacorte's most powerful families.
Alessandro's face hardened.
"That name shouldn't be here."
"Why?" Elara asked.
He didn't answer.
Dante looked toward the hidden stairs.
"Because if Matteo wrote that..."
Luca finished the thought.
"...then Vittorio knew what happened."
Another sound came from the library above.
A drawer opening.
Someone was searching the room.
Elara looked at the ledger.
Then at the three men.
Her father's secret had never been only about the families.
It led to someone who had been standing behind them all along.
And now that person knew they had found the ledger.
