Chapter 12
Romival
Holly was looking at him oddly. Like a student when they could understand the words of a question but had no idea what answer he wanted them to give.
“How do your males assure conception?” He asked, trying to make it simpler.
Holly just shrugged. A gesture he knew meant something like ‘I don’t know’, or, more accurately, any answer besides yes or no. She was looking at him oddly.
But surely her males had something. Though, it couldn’t be anything physical like a knot if she didn’t recognize it. A chemical component, maybe? Though why she wouldn’t know of it if there was, seemed strange to him.
It couldn’t be nothing. Not if humans were as fertile as he was understanding. Their population was enormous, and they bred easily. The males had to have some method to maximize the chances of fertilization.
But Holly just continued to look confused, her eyes roaming in her head as though searching for the answer somewhere in the back of her mind.
A lack of answer was often just as valid as anything that could be said. She didn’t know anything. There couldn’t be nothing. Not if her species was so prolific. He accepted the non-answer for now. He wouldn’t know for sure until a human male was scanned, and they had none available.
Not that it really mattered in his relationship with Holly, as the only pups she would be carrying and the only cock she’d need concern herself with was his. So, he allowed the subject to drop as he got to his feet, promising to see her again tomorrow.
She gave him an expectant look, but he didn’t know what she wanted. He looked back at her, waiting for her to ask for it, but when she didn’t, he had to leave.
He had been putting off his work too much to focus on her. He was having to stay up later, sacrificing his required marks of sleep, to get his work done. It was a sacrifice that he was eager to make to earn the extra time.
He knew he’d be by her side again later. He knew she was safe here. But it still felt wrong to leave her behind and not drag her away back to his den. A den that still wasn’t prepared for her. Most everything hadn’t been delivered, so he had to wait.
But his instincts were pressing down on him. Roiling in his gut, making him uneasy while something like claws dug at the back of his eyes, ordering him back. The longer he went without claiming his female, the stronger those urges would get.
However, Romival was nothing if not a patient male. He had never been afraid of shying away from working towards a goal. And his skittish female was a prize definitely worth his efforts.
He left her behind now, but the days were numbered that he would keep doing so.
