CHAPTER 34
Kaya
Sophia is all over me, brushing my hair aside, rubbing my arm, and hugging me. Lexi is pissed, while Deirdre is studying my monitor, adjusting the blanket, and offering me drinks. I quickly explain what happened and that I’m pretty sure the guy was either dead or very close to it.
Lexi suddenly looks around, takes a step back and opens the curtain to glance out into the main emergency room area. “Where’s Maverick?”
I look around too. Weird. He was just here. He wouldn’t have just left. My heart sinks. He asked if I was with him because of the baby. If he really believes that then he probably did leave. Nothing like having your worst fear confirmed right after a traumatic event. But to just take off?
Lexi storms out, likely to go search for him, but I know he’s already gone. I feel it. It’s what I assumed would happen. He doesn’t want a kid or maybe it’s the ball and chain that comes with it—me. I shake my head. No. The man that he’s shown me this past week wouldn’t just abandon me.
“Oh, sweety.” Sophia coos. “Maybe he just needs some time.”
Deirdre smiles. “Don’t worry kid. I’ve been around men like him for decades.
While I don’t know Maverick personally, he’s probably no different.
They freak out when presented with life changing domestic responsibilities.
Maybe he never thought he would be a father.
Today he saw you get attacked, found out he was going to be a dad, and probably killed a guy. He’ll be back.”
I sigh. “Maybe, but he thinks I’m only with him because of the baby.”
Deirdre cocks her head to the side. “What do you mean?”
“I’ve been fighting us being together for months.
I only just decided to accept the fact that I have feelings for him, even though I have for a while.
I’m sure the timing looks bad, but it’s not why.
I swear. The reason I didn’t tell him sooner is because I was scared he’d run. ” I shrug. “And here we are.”
Deirdre gives my hand a squeeze. “It’ll all work out, sugar.”
“If it doesn’t, I’ll freaking kill him!” Sophia’s jaw is tight, her face red in anger.
I give her a small grin. I appreciate the camaraderie, but I brought this on myself. I lay back on the pillow and turn my head away from them.
A few minutes later Lexi returns. “Well, he left. He went back to the clubhouse and talked to Ace before taking off on his bike.”
Deirdre’s eyes shift from me to Lexi. “Remember when Deuce found out about Leo and for that matter, Lucy too? He freaked out both times. He had already been a dad for fourteen or fifteen years when Marcy got pregnant with Lucy and he still lost his shit.”
Lexi huffs a laugh. “Oh, I remember and then he lost it again when he found out Lu was a girl.”
The two share in a laugh as Sophia and I watch. Deuce isn’t with either of his kid’s moms so this isn’t the same. Maverick doesn’t trust me and that’s a different thing entirely.
Nurses stop in to check on me multiple times and after we hang out for another hour the doctor returns to check me one more time before finally telling me I was good to go and that a nurse would be back with my discharge papers.
Which means I’ll likely sit here for another hour until I can get out of here.
My head injuries are superficial. My ribs are slightly bruised, but not broken or cracked.
Besides some brick rash on my face and having my arm stitches fixed up, I’m not too worse for the wear, except for imagining that bastard succeeding in raping me.
That’s the part that will stick. Maverick destroying his face was a satisfying ending to the episode.
I hope he doesn’t survive and I don’t care what kind of person that makes me.
