Chapter 28
Law didn’t chase me last night so I was curious to know what he was doing.
It wasn’t quite midnight and I could hear the television down in the den.
Standing in the doorway, I could see Law sleeping on the sofa with his hand resting at the rim of his brief.
Slowly walking closer to him, I looked down at him and emotions rushed to me.
Anger, hurt, and love filled the space where my heart was pumping.
“You ain’t got to stand there and stare at me,” he said without opening his eyes. “You crazy as fuck if you think I’ll be able to sleep peacefully when we ain’t on good terms.”
“Turn the television off and come get in the bed,” I said before walking off.
Call me what the fuck you want to call me but Law was my nigga and until I was ready to let him go, he belonged to me. All the fussing and fighting couldn’t make me stop loving him. There was a piece of Law growing on the inside of me and that was something no one could take from me.
Law came into the room and climbed in the bed behind me. It didn’t take him long to wrap his arm around me and pull me towards him. I missed his warm breath on the back of my neck and the way he smelled after he took a shower. My dumb ass will never tell his ass to leave again.
“I don’t know how many appointments you got set up, but you need to cancel them and sit your ass down somewhere.”
“Law I’m not canceling shit. I need money, and I’m damn sure not about to ask you for shit.”
“What the fuck you need? The bills paid, food in the house, and you got plenty of shit to put on. What’s the problem?”
“You not about to come back in here and tell me what to do.”
“You right! I bet I’ll stay ‘round this bitch tomorrow and turn every hoe around at the door. It’s up to you. Good night because we got an appointment in the morning and it better go good.”
My doctor’s appointment didn’t go as I expected. Instead of me going home, I was hospitalized for the remainder of my pregnancy. Just thinking of laying up in the hospital for the next twelve weeks was killing me.
“I told you to sit your ass down. Now look at you,” Law fussed as he watched me get comfortable in the small ass bed. “Now, I got to sit my ass up here with you.”
“I didn’t ask you to sit your ass up here with me. Go do what you do.”
“Not today, Summer. Arguing with me and stressing is what got you in here. Can we agree not to argue for the rest of this pregnancy because honestly, I’m tired.”
I didn’t say shit else to him. Grabbing the remote, I flipped the television on and ignored him until his mama popped in a few hours later. From the way she looked at both of us, she knew something was up.
“What the hell y’all mad about now?”
“I’m not mad, that’s her stubborn ass.”
I waved him off and made room on the bed for Ms. Mae to sit down. This was about to turn into a lecture and I wasn’t in the mood right now. All I wanted was to be left alone for a few hours so I could wrap my mind around this whole situation.
“Summer you need to focus on carrying this baby. Whatever you mad at Law about, needs to be put on the back burner until she’s here.” She rubbed on my stomach. “I don’t want to hear shit else about y’all not getting along. Am I understood?”
“I hear you,” Law replied.
“When she gets here. Y’all can do what the hell y’all want to do then. Until then, shut up and get along.”
While they talked, I grabbed my phone to cancel all my remaining appointments until further notice.
The only reason I took on clients was to keep my mind off of Law while he was gone.
I realized that shit like that got Law’s attention.
He sent a threatening text right before he showed his ass up to the house.
He preached about me making money, so that’s what I did.
Ms. Mae left and Law left shortly after.
That gave me time to take a shower and get nestled up in the bed.
The alone time did me some good. My blood pressure was down since my last check and my headache was gone.
As I laid here alone, I promised my daughter that I would let nothing else bother me that would put both of our health in danger.
Pinkie was pushed to the back of my mind and Law was too.
I wasn’t going to force happiness in my relationship.
If Law wanted to be with me, then he’ll have to do more than say it.
The door popped open and I rolled my eyes.
“I brought you something to eat because the food here is horrible and I don’t want you feeding that shit to my baby.”
“All my favorites…egg drop soup, fried chicken wings, lo mein, and a large Pepsi with a lot of ice.”
“Yea, and don’t forget I went to a lot of damn places to get that shit too.”
“Thank you, baby daddy.”
“Don’t call me that.”
“What’s wrong with that?”
“I never wanted a baby with a woman that couldn’t be my wife.
I’ll never call you my baby mama because you’re about to be my wife.
Now I’m tired of going back and forth with you.
You are the only woman that will birth my kids and the only woman that will wear my ring and last name.
I’m done with bullshit from the past. My daughter is my number one concern right now. ”
“I’m done with it. All I ask is that you respect me and never cheat on me again. If it happens again, I don’t know what I would do.”
“It won’t happen again. I promise.”
