Chapter 13

Chapter Thirteen

Evie

Four months postpartum

The rain comes down hard as I sit in my loft with the boys. I planned a few weeks ago to take the boys on a Saturday for the afternoon so Monty and Josie can go on a date.

I had ulterior motives. I wanted to take the boys to a cute outdoor spot I found so I can take some photos for a Mother’s Day gift for Josie.

I should have known better than to rely on an outdoor venue in the spring. I sigh as I stare out the window and contemplate what I’m going to do. I’m not one to give up so I just have to get creative.

With Hayes down for a nap in the pack n play in my bedroom, I look over at Shiloh.

“Do you wanna do something super cool before Hayes wakes up from his nap?” I ask. I already know he’s in before he says anything as I take in the excited gleam in his eyes.

“Only really bad.” He says, as he jumps out of his spot on the couch and comes closer to me.

I lean forward, like I’m going to share a secret with him. He copies my movements and leans in too. “How about we build a blanket fort in the living room and then we can have snacks and watch a movie?”

“A blanket fort! But no momma’s or daddy’s allowed." The seriousness in his face leaves no room for arguments.

I sit up straight and nod my head, “absolutely. We will make a sign and put it on Evie’s door, okay?”

Then about half an hour later, after many blankets and a couple of string lights I had but never got around to using. We built the best blanket fort I could have imagined.

I pushed the couches together to be the base of the structure and we put the blankets over top. I managed to get the string lights to hang from the opening.

I now have Shiloh sitting there with Hayes in between his legs. Hayes’s back to Shiloh’s front, and I’m making the goofiest faces to get them both to smile as I snap picture after picture.

It may only be from my phone, and won’t be anywhere as good as if I was using a real camera. That doesn’t matter though, because these two are the cutest ever. Shiloh has been a real helper when it came to taking these pictures.

I don’t think he was just in it for the snacks. I mean he’s five so of course snacks were a high motivator.

Once I have Hayes set up in his bouncer, and Shiloh comfy with his snacks and the newest movie about trolls, I sit in the blanket fort and look through the photos. These photos are so precious. I open up my phone and shoot off a few pictures to Harper.

Evie: Okay, look at these two. My ovaries are screaming

Evie: two attachments

Harper: Oh my god *cry emoji* stop it.

Evie: These turned out so much better than I expected. Now I just need to print them off.

Evie: Thank you same day printing options.

Harper: They’re going to turn out so good. Josie is going to be so blown away with this gift.

After putting in my order online for pick up later today, I sit back and think of the look on Josie’s face when she goes to open this gift. I hope she loves it as much as I’m hoping she does, or maybe it’s too much.

Mother’s Day

The house is quiet as I try to get the coffee pot ready to start. Usually when I come over here during the week, Monty and Josie are already up and having coffee while Shiloh eats his breakfast.

Today is Mother’s Day though, and I thought it would be nice to get started on coffee and breakfast. My mother and I agreed to have lunch so I don’t have to go and see her until later today.

The coffee pot starts to make its gurgling noises as it percolates. The sound not only jump started the caffeine for the day, but the momentum in my tasks. I pull out all the ingredients needed to make waffles. I know they have a waffle maker here somewhere. I just need to find it.

“Well good morning,” a deep voice comes from behind me.

I squeal, placing my hand over my heart as Monty saunters his way over to me from the back hall. He appears sheepish as he realizes he scared the shit out of me.

“Fuck a duck. Monty you nearly gave me a heart attack.” I blow out a deep breath before grimacing. “I’m sorry, this is your house and I just helped myself here. I just wanted to get started on some breakfast stuff for Josie.”

“It’s okay, here let me help you out.” He walks over to join me in the kitchen and brings out the waffle maker. We work together in silence, as I mix the batter, Monty takes out eggs and bacon.

Shiloh comes out at some point in his pajamas and offers his help, and when Hayes starts making a fuss, we hear Josie get up and grab him before either of us could beat her to it. Fifteen minutes later, Josie comes out with Hayes on her hip.

Her mouth opens in surprise as she looks at the breakfast spread. Monty gets her to sit at the bar and plates up her breakfast and a cup of coffee. I give Shiloh his plate and go to grab a plate of my own but Monty stops me.

“Go grab a seat, I’ll bring you your plate” He tilts his chin toward the seats and moves to where all the food is.

He places the plate before me, and when I look down my brain freezes. On my plate is an omelet. My mind rewinds as I remember the phone call that started this all.

“I’m barely awake, I don’t do mornings unless you’re bringing omelets or orgasms.”

A snort leaves me, before I grab my fork and cut out a slice. Picking up the egg and cheesy goodness, I look up and make eye contact with Monty. His deep eyes are already on me as I connect to his.

Slowly I bring the food to my mouth and close my lips around the prongs. I let out a slow moan as I pull the fork from my mouth. Once I swallow, I lick my lips and respond. “These omelets are just perfect.”

Monty clears his throat as he takes a sip of his coffee.
