After a long flight from London, I arrived home just after midnight.
As I opened the front door of our house, a soft light welcomed me from the small lamp we kept lit on the kitchen counter, and I remember how comforting it felt, good to be home and back in familiar surroundings.
You kids were at your dad’s that night, and I couldn’t wait to see you the next morning.
I was nervous, knowing that everything in our lives was about to change.
But I was elated at the thought that Carter and I were finally going to have everything we’d wanted together.
For once, I didn’t mind saying goodbye to him.
“I’ll see you soon!” he’d called out when he dropped me off at Heathrow.
He had the purest smile on his face that day. I was asleep in minutes.
