Chapter 9 #2

“Cheerful,” I observed.

“It’s nighttime.”

“Isn’t that that sun?” I pointed at the orb in the sky.

“An eclipse.”

“Of course.”

I read shipping reports on the sofa while she worked near my feet. Every so often, her shoulder brushed my shin. Accidental at first. Later, not.

When she completed a page, she held it up without looking at me.

I understood.

“Well done, little one.”

Her shoulders eased. The change was immediate enough to frighten me.

Praise settled her nervous system as surely as slow breathing did. Not empty praise. She rejected that. If I called something beautiful merely because she had made it, she narrowed her eyes and asked for reasons. So I gave them.

Good choice of contrast. Patient work. Clever detail. You stayed with it when you became frustrated.

She listened as if storing each word somewhere private. Then she tried to seduce me.

Relentlessly.

The tiny pajamas appeared on the second night.

Pale silk shorts. A sleeveless top with narrow straps. Too much bare leg. Too much warm skin. Her hair loose down her back.

She walked into the kitchen while I was drinking water and reached past me for a glass.

Her breast brushed my arm.

“Sorry,” she said. “What a terrible accident.”

She was not sorry.

“You’re going to bed.”

“I’m thirsty.”

“Then drink.”

“Not for this drink. For a different drink. A drink only you can give me.”

She took one sip while looking directly at me.

“Bed.”

“Yes, Daddy.”

The sweetness was false. The effect was not.

On the next evening she sat beside me on the sofa though there were three empty seats. Her thigh pressed along mine. She leaned over my papers and let her hair trail across my hand.

“What are you reading?”

“A report.”

“Is it erotic? A sex report?”

“No.”

“Then why are you breathing like that?”

“Because you’re sitting on my coat.”

“I don’t think that’s it. I think it’s something else, Daddy.”

By the third attempt, she abandoned subtlety. I sat in the office reviewing a dispatch ledger. She came in without knocking, shut the door, and lowered herself onto my lap.

One knee on either side of my hips.

My body reacted before my discipline did. My cock hardened against her through two layers of clothing. She felt it. Her mouth curved.

“Does Daddy intend to remain celibate forever?”

Her hands settled on my shoulders.

She was warm. Soft. Her weight fit over me with cruel precision.

I wanted to put both hands on her ass and pull her down harder. Wanted to feel her grind until that smug mouth opened.

Instead, I closed my hands around her waist and lifted.

She made an offended noise when I put her on her feet.

“Sal.”

“No.”

“We have an agreement.”

“Yes.”

“It includes sex.”

“It includes the possibility of sex. It does not require it.”

“I’m consenting.”

“I know.”

“Then what is the problem?”

I stayed seated because standing would have put us too close.

“You’re learning whether I’ll feed you when you don’t offer me your body afterward.”

Her expression sharpened.

“If I let you use Little space as the road to my bed now, you may never believe the care was free.”

“I didn’t say I owed you.”

“No. But somebody taught you everything comes with a price.”

She looked away.

I kept my voice low.

“I want you. That isn’t in question,” I said, calmly.

“It feels questionable from here.”

“My cock was under you thirty seconds ago. Hard as a fucking rock. Do not insult both of us.”

Her mouth twitched despite herself.

“I need you to know I can tuck you into bed, praise you, feed you, hold you while you cry, and never collect.”

“Collect,” she repeated. “Daddy, I’m begging you to collect.”

“That is how men have treated care around you. As credit.”

She folded her arms.

“You make refusing me sound righteous.”

“It’s not righteous. It’s torture.”

“Good.”

“Yes. You’ve mentioned your position.”

She looked at me for a long moment.

Then some of the sharpness left her shoulders.

“Will you read to me tonight?” she asked.

“Yes.”

“The firebird?”

“If you get ready for bed without further attempts on my virtue.”

“You don’t have any virtue—you’re a gangster.”

“Then stop attempting whatever remains.”

This time her laugh came quickly.

She walked to the door, paused, and glanced back.

“Daddy?”

“Yes, little one?”

“You drive me crazy but . . . thank you for being you.”

Then she left before I could answer.

I sat alone with an erection and the certainty that restraint had bought me something desire could not.

A little more trust.

On the third evening, Pietro called at ten-forty while Yelena and I sat at the dining table reviewing dispatch records. His camera stayed off. Behind his voice I heard a door alarm chirping and Tonio swearing in Italian.

“We’re inside,” Pietro said. “Two guards subdued. Alive.”

“Regrettably,” Tonio added.

“You were told no deaths,” I said.

“This is why I said regrettably.”

Angela’s voice came next. “I have the central account. Tracker deletion has started. There are more endpoints than expected.”

A live directory appeared on our screen. Vehicle numbers. Phones. Aircraft. Commercial property accounts.

Yelena leaned closer. Angela scrolled.

“Stop,” Yelena said.

Angela stopped immediately.

A coded entry sat halfway down the page.

AS-4911. PROBABLE. VISUAL PENDING.

The service stair code. The Astor Street building. They had found us.

Cold moved through me.

“What is it?” Angela asked.

“This building,” Yelena said. “Astor Street. Four-nine-one-one is the service access code Sal gave me the first night. They know where I am?”

I was already on my feet.

“Pietro, copy every record attached to that entry before deletion.”

“Working.”

“Tonio, how long until you can leave?”

“Eight minutes.”

“Make it four.”

I called security.

Staff relocation first. Every civilian employee moved out through separate exits and told there was an electrical fault. Guards reassigned. Building vehicles abandoned in place and replaced from three unrelated garages. No one returned home by a regular route.

Then Kiryl.

His location had not been connected to Astor Street, but Gianni was not stupid enough to search one target at a time. If he could find us here, he could find Kiryl, too.

“Move him before dawn,” I told Pietro.

“I’ll arrange it.”

Yelena stood across the table, arms folded tight.

“Where?”

“You don’t need the location.”

Her expression hardened.

“For security,” I added. “Not because I don’t trust you. I don’t want it shared, I don’t want it spoken, I don’t want anyone to know.”

“I know his habits.”

“Yes.”

“He’ll panic if strangers wake him.”

“Then record a message. You coddle him too much, he’s not a baby.”

“He is a baby. My baby brother.”

“You’re almost the same age.”

“It doesn’t matter. Ugh, you don’t get it, do you? I’ll help plan the route.”

“No.”

“Sal.”

“Yelena.”

The room tightened.

Then I changed my answer.

“You may help until eleven-thirty.”

She blinked. “Excuse me?”

“The rule you negotiated. Bedtime.”

“This is an emergency.”

“And I’ve extended your involvement to the deadline you chose. After that, Pietro and I handle it.”

“I know Gianni.”

“You’ll still know him tomorrow.”

She stared at me. I held the line.

“Fine,” she said.

For the next fifty minutes, she was brilliant.

She found three likely routes Gianni would monitor and designed a fourth around his assumptions.

She recorded a message for Kiryl explaining that the move was precautionary.

She warned Pietro that Kiryl asked too many questions when frightened and should be given a task to occupy him.

At eleven-thirty I closed the file in front of her.

“Bedtime.”

“I need ten minutes.”

“No.”

Her eyes narrowed.

“You said until eleven-thirty.”

“It is eleven-thirty.”

“I’m in the middle of—”

“Pietro has it. Trust us. He’s competent.”

She looked toward the secure display.

Pietro said, “I don’t know about competent, but I have this.”

Yelena stood with dignity, gathered her notes, and left.

I expected an argument. That should have warned me.

At midnight, she returned in soft pajamas with a novel under one arm.

No tiny silk this time. Loose cotton trousers. Long sleeves. Bare feet.

She took the chair directly opposite mine, curled into it, and opened the book.

I looked at the clock.

Then at her.

“Bed.”

“I’m not working.”

“That was not the rule.”

“I’m relaxing.”

“In the wrong room. The rule was bed at 11:30.”

She turned a page.

“Yelena.”

“I’m at a very important part.”

I watched her eyes.

They had not moved across a single line.

“Bed, little one.”

“In a minute.”

I returned to the report. At twelve-five, I reminded her again. At twelve-ten, once more.

Each time, my voice stayed calm. Each time, she gave me a different excuse.

The chapter was nearly finished.

She was not tired.

Olimpo needed company, though Olimpo was asleep under my desk.

At twelve-fifteen, she turned another unread page and stretched both legs out.

Her bare feet came to rest across my lap.

I looked down at them.

Then up at her.

She held my gaze over the top of the book. The challenge was quiet. Clean. Deliberate.

She wanted to know whether Daddy existed only in ink.

Whether I would remain steady when obedience stopped being easy and praise stopped being enough.

Desire entered me hard and immediate.

I put the report aside.

“Close the book,” I said.

She closed the book slowly and left her feet where they were.

“Sit up.”

She did. The book went onto the table. Her feet remained in my lap, but her posture changed. Alert now. Her pupils were wide.

“Did you forget bedtime?”

“No.”

“Were my instructions unclear?”

“No, Daddy.”

“Did you deliberately stay up because you wanted to test whether I would enforce the rule?”

Her breathing quickened.

“Yes, Daddy.”

The answer heated every part of me that needed to remain controlled. I closed one hand lightly around her ankle. Her pulse moved fast beneath my thumb.

“What consequence did we agree could follow deliberate, low-stakes disobedience?”

“Corner time.”

“What else?”

“A spanking.”

“Which do you want?”

She looked at my hand around her ankle. Then at my face.

“The spanking.”

“Say it fully.”

“I want you to spank me, Daddy, so I learn my lesson.”
