Chapter Twenty-Eight The Casino #3
Haruki stood at the upper security balcony.
For one second, Renji could not understand what he was seeing.
Haruki wore hospital trousers and an open black coat over bandages.
One arm remained in a sling. A portable chest drain hung beside him, carried by Akiko, who looked prepared to murder him herself.
Ken supported his weight from the other side.
Haruki held a pistol in his left hand. The shot had been accurate. Too accurate for someone who should not have been standing.
Renji's calm fractured at the edges.
"What are you doing?"
Haruki looked down at him.
"Fighting with you."
"You cannot be here."
"Later."
The word struck. A promise returned.
Isao stared upward, clutching his destroyed hand.
"You think this changes anything?" he shouted. "You protect the lie because it protects your power."
Haruki's face had gone pale. His voice remained steady.
"No."
He lowered the weapon slightly.
"I protect the right of people to choose without a gun at their head."
"The First Law denies choice."
"Yes."
The answer moved through the room. Even Mori looked up. Haruki continued.
"That does not give you the right to become it."
"You think reform will be given to you?"
"No."
"You think the Accord will confess?"
"No."
"Then you are delaying the inevitable."
Haruki looked towards Renji. Only briefly. Partners across the open floor.
"No," he said. "We are deciding what we refuse to become while changing it."
Isao lunged for the fallen knife. Renji closed the arteries supplying his arm. The limb failed. Mina kicked the weapon away. Ryota forced Isao to his knees. He could have killed him. His face said he wanted to. He did not.
The immediate battle shifted. Shibata fighters saw Isao captured. Two dropped weapons. A third attempted to reach the service exit.
Haruki spoke through the Casino speakers.
"The exits remain sealed. Surrender and receive medical treatment."
A vampire near the western tables laughed.
"You offer mercy from a balcony."
Haruki raised the gun.
"I offer it once."
The vampire aimed towards Riku. Renji stopped his heart. The body fell.
Silence entered around the death. Not complete — gunfire continued near the north side — but everyone close enough understood. Mercy had a boundary. Not punishment. Protection.
The remaining Shibata fighters surrendered in sequence. Weapons struck carpet. Hands lifted. Accord officers moved to restrain them.
Mori raised one hand.
"No executions."
His people obeyed. Renji looked towards him. The Commander met his gaze. A choice made differently. Perhaps only because the Takahara stood watching. Perhaps that was enough for tonight.
Then the lower level exploded. The floor moved beneath them. Glass fell from the chandeliers. Haruki disappeared behind the balcony rail.
Renji's body reacted before thought.
"Haruki."
"I'm here."
His voice came through the earpiece, strained. Akiko shouted something above. Ken dragged Haruki back into view. Alive.
Renji forced himself to listen beyond the room. The lower group had breached the old vault corridor. Not towards Riku. Towards the Archive materials brought from the estate. The first-layer tablets had been moved to the Casino under Accord guard.
Renji had not known. He turned towards Mori.
"You brought the records."
Mori's face hardened.
"For protection."
"You brought the target."
"We could not leave them at the estate."
Haruki's voice came through the speakers.
"Argument later. Lower vault access closes in ninety seconds."
Mori looked up.
"How?"
"I built the renovation."
Haruki leaned against the balcony rail. Blood had begun seeping through the bandage beneath his coat. Renji saw it. Felt it. His voice lowered.
"Sit down."
"No."
"You are bleeding."
"I know."
"Haruki."
"Lower vault."
Equal. Not protector and protected. The word remained unspoken.
Renji turned towards the service corridor.
"Mina, remain with Riku."
She nodded.
"Mori, secure the prisoners."
"And you?"
Renji looked up at Haruki. Haruki handed the pistol to Ken. Then spoke into the radio.
"I'll guide him."
Renji entered the lower passage.
The Casino below the public floor had never been beautiful — concrete, exposed pipes, reinforced doors. A building's honest anatomy hidden beneath carpets and gold. Renji moved through it at speed. Haruki's voice directed him.
"Second left."
Renji turned.
"Three ahead."
He felt them.
"Two human. One vampire."
"Armed."
"Yes."
The first man appeared. Renji disabled his legs. The second fired from behind a utility cart. Haruki said, "Pipe above him." Renji ruptured the sprinkler line with a thrown fragment of metal. Water struck the shooter. He flinched. Renji closed the muscles of his hand. The weapon fell.
The vampire came through the wall. Not the door. Concrete broke beneath the impact. She reached Renji with a blade raised. He caught her wrist.
She smiled.
"Takahara."
"Shibata?"
"No."
Her blood carried another line. Old. One of the seven. Not Shibata. A surviving house aligned to the original coalition. The conspiracy was broader than one name.
She twisted free. Fast enough that the blade entered Renji's side. Silver burned. He held her close before she could withdraw it.
"Who commands you?"
She laughed against his shoulder.
"You still think there is one commander."
Renji felt Haruki's breathing through the open radio. Too shallow. Akiko ordering him to return to bed. Haruki ignoring her.
"Renji," he said.
The woman heard. Her smile changed.
"The human."
Renji's calm became absolute. She tried to turn the blade. He stopped her heart. Not violent. Not prolonged. One precise closure. He caught her body before it fell. Lowered it. Removed the knife. Closed his own wound enough to continue.
"Are you injured?" Haruki asked.
"Yes."
"How badly?"
"Later."
Despite everything, Haruki laughed once. Pain ended it. The sound was enough.
Renji continued towards the vault. The lower attackers had reached the final door.
Five remained. Two placed charges around the frame.
One held a case designed to carry blood tablets.
Their leader stood back. Human. Older than Isao.
Renji recognised him from the financial records Sōta had provided.
A director of one of the shell organisations.
A man whose name connected the murdered historians, Accord transfers and Shibata money.
Toru Hayashi. The immediate face of the conspiracy.
Not architect. Administrator. The kind of man who made atrocities durable through paperwork.
Hayashi looked towards Renji.
"You should have remained dead with the others."
Haruki heard through the radio.
"Record everything."
The corridor cameras turned. Hayashi glanced upward. Too late.
Renji stopped several metres away.
"You ordered the historians killed."
"They found material they did not understand."
"You altered the transfers."
"To prevent panic."
The phrase belonged to the Accord. To Sōta. To every faction certain consequences justified control.
"You attacked the hospital."
"We attempted to retrieve stolen property."
"The child?"
"Lineage assets do not belong to individuals."
Renji felt Haruki's anger through silence. Hayashi continued.
"The Takahara experiment failed because it confused affection with governance."
"It worked."
"For a time."
"You destroyed it."
"We corrected it."
The words removed the final uncertainty. Not remorse. Not necessity. Belief. Hayashi did not consider the massacre tragic. He considered it maintenance.
Renji looked towards the charges.
"You will not destroy the records."
"No."
Hayashi smiled.
"You will."
One of his people opened a case. Inside lay glass vials. Blood. Seven labels. Seven descendant lines. Not complete. Enough to contaminate the Archive seals. Enough perhaps to corrupt or trigger them.
"The first chamber responded to willing blood," Renji said.
"The deeper one may respond to ancestry alone."
"You do not know."
"Neither do you."
Hayashi lifted a detonator. Haruki spoke quietly into Renji's ear.
"His thumb."
Renji felt it. Pulse in the hand. Tendon movement beginning. He closed the artery before the button depressed. Hayashi's thumb stopped. Confusion entered his face.
The other attackers moved. Renji did not rage.
He performed. One shooter lost vision. Another lost balance.
A third attempted to detonate the charges manually.
Renji stopped his heart. The fourth dropped his weapon immediately.
Alive. The fifth ran towards the vault with the blood case.
Renji ruptured no vessel. He increased pressure behind the man's eyes until pain forced him to fall.
Mercy where possible. Death where necessary.
Hayashi remained standing. His disabled hand hanging at his side. He looked at the bodies around him.
"At last," he said. "You prove them right."
Renji approached.
"No."
"You decide who lives."
"Yes."
"Like every tyrant."
"Like every surgeon."
Hayashi's face tightened.
"You believe precision makes killing moral."
"No."
Renji stopped in front of him.
"Necessity makes it necessary. Nothing makes it clean."
Haruki's voice came through the radio.
"Renji."
A warning. Not because Renji was losing himself. Because Haruki knew how easy certainty could become execution.
Renji looked at Hayashi. The man had ordered deaths. Attacked civilians. Tried to erase the Archive again. He remained unarmed now. Defeated. Killing him would be simple. Perhaps satisfying. Not necessary.
Renji closed the blood flow to both legs. Hayashi collapsed. Renji caught him by the coat and lowered him against the wall.
"You will live," he said.
Hayashi laughed weakly.
"Mercy?"
"No."
Renji looked towards the camera.
"Testimony."
Haruki exhaled in his ear.
