Chapter 10 Cracks in the Foundation #2

We had earned our place at the national championship.

Yet instead of leaving our fears behind, they had traveled there with us.

And whatever cracks had begun forming beneath the surface of our carefully balanced lives were only growing wider.

The First Complaint

The celebration lasted exactly one day.

On Sunday evening, the fellowship returned to Blackridge University carrying regional medals, congratulatory certificates, and the quiet confidence that months of hard work had finally been rewarded.

By Monday morning, campus had already moved on.

Students hurried between lectures with coffee in one hand and backpacks slung over the other.

Professors assigned new projects without acknowledging the regional competition.

The university newspaper published a short article praising Blackridge Honors for advancing to the national championship, complete with a team photograph taken after the awards ceremony.

Life resumed its familiar rhythm.

At least, it appeared to.

When our Monday evening fellowship meeting began, Professor Monroe seemed unusually distracted.

She arrived a few minutes late carrying a folder I had never seen before.

Normally she greeted everyone with a smile before asking about classes or exams.

This time, she placed the folder on the conference table without saying a word.

Eli noticed immediately.

“Everything okay, Professor?”

She looked around the room.

“I hope so.”

The answer immediately changed the atmosphere.

Liam frowned slightly.

“What’s happened?”

Professor Monroe rested one hand on the folder.

“I received an email from the Office of Academic Integrity this afternoon.”

No one spoke.

“The email informed me that an anonymous ethics complaint has been filed regarding the After Hours Honors Fellowship.”

A heavy silence settled over the room.

Kai leaned forward.

“What kind of complaint?”

Professor Monroe opened the folder.

“I’ll tell you exactly what I know.”

She adjusted her glasses before continuing.

“The complaint alleges that one fellowship member has received unfair academic advantages because of an inappropriate personal relationship with a graduate mentor.”

Every instinct in my body told me not to look at Liam.

I failed.

For only a fraction of a second, our eyes met.

His expression remained calm.

Only I noticed how tightly his jaw had become.

Professor Monroe continued reading.

“The complaint specifically questions the fairness of project evaluations, mentoring hours, leadership decisions, and access to fellowship resources.”

Mason broke the silence first.

“Do they mention names?”

Professor Monroe nodded once.

“They do.”

The room suddenly felt much smaller.

“The complaint identifies Liam Carter and Noah Bennett.”

No one moved.

No one spoke.

Even Eli had lost every joke.

Professor Monroe closed the folder.

“I want all of you to understand something before we continue.”

She looked directly at me.

“An anonymous complaint is not evidence.”

Then she looked toward Liam.

“It is simply an allegation.”

Her voice remained steady.

“The university has not reached any conclusions.”

“They have only begun asking questions.”

Owen finally found his voice.

“What happens now?”

“The Office of Academic Integrity will conduct a preliminary review.”

Professor Monroe answered honestly.

“They’ll examine fellowship records.”

“They may interview faculty.”

“They may interview students.”

Kai frowned.

“Are they investigating the entire fellowship?”

“They are.”

Another silence followed.

Eli looked completely bewildered.

“But we’ve all been together every evening.”

“We know how hard everyone worked.”

“I know.”

Professor Monroe nodded.

“Unfortunately, investigators don’t begin with personal opinions.”

“They begin with procedure.”

Liam spoke for the first time.

His voice remained calm, though quieter than usual.

“What exactly are they questioning?”

Professor Monroe reopened the folder.

“They’re questioning whether your position as graduate mentor created an unfair advantage for Noah during fellowship activities.”

Liam didn’t hesitate.

“It didn’t.”

“I know.”

She answered immediately.

“But we’ll need documentation proving that.”

She handed several printed schedules across the table.

“I’ve already begun gathering attendance records, evaluation forms, and project revisions.”

Mason scanned one of the pages.

“Everything’s documented.”

“It is.”

Professor Monroe nodded.

“And I’m grateful for that.”

She looked toward me.

“Noah.”

My throat suddenly felt dry.

“Yes?”

“I need you to answer one question.”

I nodded.

“Have you ever received academic opportunities, grades, project responsibilities, or evaluations because of your personal relationship with Liam?”

The room remained completely silent.

I met her eyes.

“No.”

The answer came without hesitation.

“Never.”

She looked toward Liam.

“The same question.”

“I have never shown Noah favoritism.”

His voice remained steady.

“Every decision involving fellowship work has been reviewed by you.”

Professor Monroe nodded.

“Exactly.”

She looked around the room again.

“Which is why I believe the complaint lacks merit.”

A little of the tension eased.

Only a little.

Kai folded his arms.

“Then why does this feel so serious?”

Professor Monroe sighed quietly.

“Because perception matters.”

She paused before continuing.

“If people begin questioning the integrity of this fellowship...”

She glanced toward the Blackridge Honors banner hanging proudly on the wall.

“...our reputation suffers.”

Owen looked thoughtful.

“What about nationals?”
