CHAPTER THIRTY-THREE

Hoofbeats Home

It didn’t take long for the farmhouse to begin feeling lived in.

Boxes slowly disappeared.

Pictures found their places on the walls.

The kitchen smelled like fresh coffee every morning.

And every evening ended the same way.

Luke and Emily sat on the porch, watching the sunset over their pasture.

One evening, Emily looked across the empty field.

“It still feels like something’s missing.”

Luke smiled.

“I’ve been thinking the same thing.”

She looked at him.

“Horses?”

“Horses.”

? ? ?

The following Saturday, they drove to a nearby horse ranch.

Luke tried to act calm.

Emily knew better.

“You’ve been smiling since breakfast.”

“I have not.”

“You absolutely have.”

“I may be a little excited.”

“A little?”

Luke laughed.

“Okay… a lot.”

? ? ?

The ranch owner greeted them with a warm smile.

“You must be Luke and Emily.”

“That’s us,” Luke replied.

“I’ve got a couple I think you’ll really like.”

She led them toward a quiet pasture.

The first horse was a beautiful bay Quarter Horse gelding with gentle eyes and a calm personality.

Luke slowly reached out his hand.

The horse stepped forward and softly nudged his shoulder.

Luke smiled immediately.

“I think he just picked me.”

The ranch owner laughed.

“I think you’re right.”

? ? ?

Emily wandered toward another pasture.

Standing near the fence was a gorgeous sorrel mare with a long flaxen mane.

The mare calmly walked over and lowered her head.

Emily gently stroked her neck.

“She’s beautiful.”

The ranch owner smiled.

“She’s sweet as can be.”

Emily looked over at Luke.

“I think I found mine.”

Luke grinned.

“I think she found you.”

? ? ?

An hour later, paperwork was finished.

Luke and Emily stood beside the horse trailer.

Emily looked at Luke.

“We’re really doing this.”

Luke smiled.

“We are.”

The drive home felt different than any drive before.

Every few minutes Luke looked in the mirrors to check on the horses.

Emily laughed.

“They’re still back there.”

“I know.”

“I’ve checked three times.”

“I’m going to keep checking.”

? ? ?

As they pulled through the gate of the farmhouse, both of them grew quiet.

Luke parked beside the barn.

Together they carefully led the horses into their new home.

The gelding stepped into his stall without hesitation.

The mare curiously sniffed every corner before settling down.

Emily smiled.

“They already look like they belong here.”

Luke nodded.

“They do.”

? ? ?

Later that afternoon, they opened the pasture gate.

The two horses cautiously stepped outside.

For a moment they simply stood together.

Then, almost at the same time, they broke into an easy run across the green field.

Emily watched with tears in her eyes.

Luke slipped an arm around her shoulders.

“This…”

He smiled.

“…is exactly what I dreamed about.”

Emily leaned against him.

“Me too.”

The horses galloped through the pasture before slowing to graze beneath the afternoon sun.

The empty field no longer looked empty.

It looked alive.

Luke looked toward the barn.

“We still have one thing left.”

Emily smiled.

“The dogs.”

Luke laughed.

“I have a feeling they’re going to turn this peaceful place upside down.”

Emily grinned.

“I certainly hope so.”

They stood together on the fence line, watching the horses settle into their new home.

The farmhouse had become more than a house.

The pasture had become more than grass.

And the dream they had shared for so many years had finally found its heartbeat in the sound of hooves echoing across the land.
