CHAPTER FORTY-FIVE
The Night Before
The farmhouse felt unusually quiet.
For the first time since they had moved in, Luke was there alone.
Emily had gone to stay with her parents for the night, following the old wedding tradition.
Oscar wandered from room to room, whining softly as if he couldn’t understand why Emily wasn’t home.
Luke smiled and scratched the little dachshund behind the ears.
“I know, buddy. I miss her too.”
Kira sat faithfully by the front window, watching the driveway.
Winston stretched out in his favorite spot by the fireplace, snored once, and fell into another deep sleep.
Luke chuckled.
“At least one of us can relax.”

Outside, the horses grazed peacefully beneath the fading evening sky.
Luke walked to the pasture carrying two apples.
The gelding nickered softly as he approached.
“You’ve been with me through a lot already.”
He rubbed the horse’s neck.
“Tomorrow’s a big day.”
The horse accepted the apple without complaint.
Luke laughed.
“I’ll take that as encouragement.”

Across town, Emily sat on the porch of her parents’ home.
Her mother handed her a cup of hot tea.
“Nervous?”
Emily smiled.
“A little.”
“That’s normal.”
“I’ve dreamed about tomorrow for so long.”
Her mother squeezed her hand.
“And now it’s finally here.”
Emily looked down at the engagement ring sparkling on her finger.
“It still feels like a dream.”
Her mother smiled.
“The best dreams usually do.”

Later that evening, Ryan stopped by the farmhouse.
Luke opened the door.
“I figured you’d still be awake,” Ryan said.
Luke smiled.
“I don’t think sleep is happening tonight.”
Ryan laughed.
“I figured.”
The brothers carried two glasses of iced tea onto the porch and sat in silence for a while.
Finally, Ryan spoke.
“You remember when we were kids?”
Luke nodded.
“We talked about growing up.”
“Having families.”
“Owning land.”
Luke smiled.
“I remember.”
Ryan looked across the pasture.
“You actually did it.”
Luke shook his head.
“We did it.”
Ryan grinned.
“You always were stubborn enough to chase your dreams.”
Luke laughed.
“I’ll take that as a compliment.”
“It was.”
Ryan grew quiet.
“I’m really proud of you, Luke.”
Luke looked over.
“Thanks.”
“And tomorrow…”
Ryan smiled.
“…I’m honored to stand beside you.”
Luke reached over and gave his brother’s shoulder a firm squeeze.
“I wouldn’t have anyone else.”
? ? ?
As midnight approached, Luke stepped onto the porch one last time.
The stars stretched across the Oregon sky.
The farmhouse stood peaceful and still.
He thought about everything that had brought him here.
The long hours at work.
The financial struggles.
The short road trips.
The concerts.
The county fair.
The fireworks.
The unforgettable vacation to Snoqualmie Falls.
The horses.
The dogs.
The dream house.
Every mile.
Every challenge.
Every laugh.
Every blessing.
Each one had led him to tomorrow.
? ? ?
Across town, Emily looked out her bedroom window at the same sky.
She whispered a quiet prayer of gratitude.
Tomorrow she would walk down the aisle.
Tomorrow she would marry her best friend.
Tomorrow they would begin the next chapter of the life they had already started building together.
She smiled as she turned off the light.
Neither of them knew exactly what the future would hold.
There would be more adventures.
More challenges.
More laughter.
More ordinary days that would someday become treasured memories.
But one thing was certain.
No matter where the road led…
They would travel it together.
And that was more than enough.
