CHAPTER FORTY-NINE

Music Under the Stars

Summer had settled comfortably over the farmhouse.

The pasture was bright green.

The horses spent lazy afternoons grazing beneath the shade trees.

The flowers Emily had planted around the porch were in full bloom.

One evening, Luke looked over at Emily while they were eating dinner.

“You know what we haven’t done in a while?”

Emily smiled.

“What?”

“Go to a concert.”

She laughed.

“I was just thinking the same thing.”

Luke reached for his phone.

“There’s an outdoor country concert at the fairgrounds this Saturday.”

Emily grinned.

“I think we have plans.”

? ? ?

Saturday evening arrived with clear skies and warm temperatures.

Luke and Emily met Luke’s mother, Ryan, and a few close friends at the fairgrounds.

They spread out lawn chairs and blankets as the opening band took the stage.

“This is perfect,” Emily said.

Luke nodded.

“It reminds me of some of our first dates.”

She smiled.

“Except now we have to be home before Oscar convinces the neighbors we’ve abandoned him.”

Ryan laughed.

“And Winston probably won’t even notice you’re gone.”

“I think he’d sleep through the whole weekend,” Luke replied.

Everyone laughed.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, the headline band stepped onto the stage.

The crowd erupted in cheers.

Luke reached for Emily’s hand.

She squeezed it gently.

The music echoed across the fairgrounds as everyone sang along to familiar songs.

During a slower tune, Luke wrapped an arm around Emily.

She rested her head against his shoulder.

“This,” she whispered, “never gets old.”

“No,” Luke replied.

“It never does.”

During intermission, Ryan handed Luke a bottle of water.

“You know,” Ryan said, “you seem happier than I’ve ever seen you.”

Luke looked toward Emily, who was laughing with his mother a few feet away.

“I am.”

Ryan smiled.

“You’ve got a good life.”

Luke nodded.

“I really do.”

? ? ?

On the drive home, the windows were down and the warm summer air drifted through the truck.

Emily quietly hummed one of the songs they’d just heard.

Luke smiled.

“Still stuck in your head?”

She laughed.

“It’ll be there for a week.”

“I’ll probably be humming it at work Monday.”

“You definitely will.”

? ? ?

When they pulled into the driveway, Oscar greeted them with dramatic whining before they even opened the truck doors.

“There he is,” Luke laughed.

“Our welcome committee.”

Kira calmly wagged her tail beside the porch.

Winston slowly opened one eye, saw that everyone was home, and immediately went back to sleep.

Emily smiled.

“I think he’s relieved he didn’t have to get up.”

Luke laughed.

“I think Winston has mastered the art of doing as little as possible.”

? ? ?

Later that night, Luke and Emily sat together on the porch swing beneath a sky filled with stars.

The faint sound of crickets filled the warm night air.

The horses rested quietly in the pasture.

Oscar slept curled at Luke’s feet after finally wearing himself out.

Kira kept watch over the yard.

Winston snored softly nearby.

Emily looked at Luke.

“We’ve had a pretty amazing life so far.”

Luke smiled.

“We have.”

“And I don’t think the best years are behind us.”

Luke looked across the peaceful farm.

“I think they’re just getting started.”

Emily rested her head against his shoulder.

“I think you’re right.”

The music from the concert had faded.

The crowd was long gone.

But the feeling remained.

Life wasn’t measured by one big moment.

It was measured by evenings like this…

Music still echoing in their hearts…

A peaceful farm beneath the stars…

And the quiet certainty that they were exactly where they were meant to be.
