Chapter 38 Carter

Tiffany’s words and Jason’s lies bounced around inside my head, sparking pain and fury.

I didn’t need to look at Susan to know she wore an ‘I told you so’ expression.

Because she had told me. She’d told me how bad an idea it was to keep Jason alive in the first place.

She said if I want to torture him, I should’ve done it in an isolated cell without involving Tiffany.

I couldn’t stand that form of kindness at the time.

I wanted him to be there, impotent near his victims, frustrated sexually, castrated in all but the literal sense.

I also hoped that Tiffany would tell Jason the part she took on his torture.

He would snap, lunge at her. We would shock him from afar and she’d see him as the piece of shit he was. I was wrong. I was so fucking wrong.

“Well… That’s that, then,” Susan said, “Your little experiment didn’t pay off, Carter. I tell security to wait for Tiffany to leave and bring him back.”

“No,” I said. “Dr. Yan, leave, please.”

She huffed. Clearly, what started as a scientific curiosity for Jason’s mutation had become more of an exciting human drama unfolding. It didn’t matter, of course. This was not for her. She left, and I turned to Susan, with resolve. I knew what to do and I needed her to see it.

“No. Let them do it,” I said darkly.

“What?” She stared at me like I was insane, then continued, “You’re going to let your little prize calf run away?”

“No. Of course not. Jason is dangerous. Stuns won’t take him down and if we shoot him, we could hit Tiffany.”

“That’s why I said we should wait for her to leave. Then we can safely subdue him or kill him. I still stand by that.”

“I want them to think they can escape. I want to face them myself,” I growled.

“That’s absurd! I cannot stress what a bad idea this is!” Susan sighed, standing up. “Do you need me to list all the ways this could go wrong?”

“No,” I said, deadpan.

“Because you already thought of them or because it won’t change your mind?”

“More the latter,” I said honestly.

Susan nodded, displeased. She knew how stubborn I was. She knew she wouldn’t talk me out of this. She’d seen this play out well and play out poorly, but right now, she knew watching was her only option.

“I’d like nothing more than to put a bullet in that guy’s brain for what he did to Wren. But this is about your business with Tiffany,” Susan said.

“It is.”

“I won’t stand in the way.”

“I know you won’t. You’d do whatever for Wren to make her happy and safe, too, wouldn’t you? Because you love her as much as I love Tiffany.”

“Whatever it takes,” Susan said. “Please be careful with whatever you’re planning.”

“I will,” I said, not fully knowing if I would be able to honor that promise.

I watched Tiff walk away from the mutated monster that was her former friend.

His massive cock swung as he turned to walk towards the stable he would use as a bed.

My bull. I was disgusted by who he was, but I felt a certain pride in the glory of his punishment.

It didn’t matter. What was the advice they gave writers?

‘Kill your darlings,’ that was it. Time to get the axe.

“Tell security to stand down. Place a few guards on the way, minimal stuff. Just to sell it. Direct their path to,” I paused. “Never mind, I’ll tell you the whole plan tomorrow. Just make sure-”

“It will be executed,” Susan assured me. “For better or worse.”

“Thanks, Susan,” I relaxed. “I don’t know what I would do without you.”

“Probably be in jail for killing your dad or worse. You’d be at the bottom of the sea somewhere in East Asia. After all the-”

“Let’s not talk about that right now,” I cut her off.

I didn’t need to be reminded of the deal I’d made with a devil.

Not when I was almost done with the contract.

It was too late to save my soul, but there were other things I could save.

I just couldn’t bring myself to dwell on them right now.

My battle now was not against the devil who hooked his claws in Tiffany’s heart.

This wasn’t a fight. This was a lesson and I had to be her teacher.

“I did not fuck Jen,” I told Susan angrily.

“I know,” Susan said, heading towards the door. “Send me your plan. I’ll do what I can so it goes smoothly, but it will be on you in the end.”

“I know,” I said, between gritted teeth. Then I closed my eyes. “As it should be.”

Susan left. And I typed my password into the security terminal to access the door controls. Then, I got to work.
