Introduction

“It would not do for you to pull away like that when we are out in public together. So, I ask again. Are you afraid of me?”

“No.” She lifted her chin and took a step toward him. “Do you need me to prove it to you?”

Something gleamed in the depths of his eyes then, something dark and hungry, that sent a hot, electric pulse straight through her. She’d seen that gleam before, when his interest had been caught with a deal or he’d been issued a business challenge he wanted to meet. He’d never looked at her that way though, not until now, and it stole all the breath from her lungs.

That was a mistake. You’ve caught the attention of a predator.

She couldn’t let him believe she was afraid of him, even though that might have been the safest course of action. She just couldn’t. She wasn’t anyone’s victim.

She had caught his interest, and some long-forgotten part of her, a lost, lonely part, liked that. Liked that a lot.
