Chapter Six
chapter six
LACHLAN
I feel each step she takes away from me. Excruciatingly.
With more effort than it’s ever taken, I shift back to my human form. It dulls the pain, barely. Unfortunately, it doesn’t do anything to quell the nausea that crashes over me every step I take back toward the throne. Away from her.
So, bonds are real.
That’s complicated.
I’m shaking all over with a thin sheen of cold sweat clinging to my skin by the time I sink into the glorified chair. Images of her sprawled out on it for me earlier flash against the backs of my eyelids, a small comfort.
Otherwise, I feel violently ill.
A small price to pay to maintain my freedom, though, and hers. There’s too much at stake to let my dick do the thinking here.
I wait out the distinct feeling of discomfort until I confirm that while it’s not dissipating, it’s also not getting worse. Standing still seems like a tall order, so instead I slide out of the seat until I’m on the ground, my back braced against the front of the throne.
I’m sure I set my phone down here when I was between her thighs. It was tight enough in my slacks without the added pressure in my pocket.
When my fingertips connect with the metal rectangle, I feel my shoulders sag with relief.
That’s one herculean feat down.
Aedan answers on the second ring.
“Long time. Was hoping for longer.”
As charming as ever, my cousin.
“Look, I need to know about being bonded-”
“Human?” The ice in his tone is immediate.
“Yes.”
“Has it been satisfied?”
I take a deep breath.
“No. Nearly. I was able to keep myself under control.”
His laugh is ugly.
“There is no keeping yourself under control. All they need to do to satisfy it is issue you a command.”
That seems unlikely.
“Are you sure? I had this uncontrollable urge to be with her. Physically. I resisted it.”
He scoffs.
“Bonds have nothing to do with sex or love. Only control. If you wanted to fuck the human before letting yourself get tricked into a soul bond those feelings might be amplified but don’t try and romanticize this.
Kill her or kill yourself. That’s all you need to know. That’s what Adra should have done.”
I don’t need to check the phone to know he’s hung up.
