Sorimah #3

Next, I went to open the fridge and was in shock that they had absolutely nothing in there other than beverages. Slamming the door shut, I put their house key on my key ring and proceeded to leave. I locked up typing in their alarm code first before turning the key.

I read what Aviana put down on the list that Akeera liked, and it was a bunch of crap.

So many snacks and juices that I wasn’t sure if I recalled seeing anything healthy on the list. Chicken nuggets and tenders were the only thing that consisted of the meal.

It really pissed me off with how she allowed her child to endure.

Hopping in my ride, I headed for the nearest Krogers.

I knew I would have to shop as if I was shopping for my own household.

The day had just gotten started, and I was aggravated by how little effort they were putting in as parents.

It wasn’t that much shit to handle to where you had no time for those that mattered.

What I really wanted to do was call it quits before even meeting the child, but it was clear that the child needed some genuine love that she wasn’t receiving from her parents. I knew how it felt to be overlooked so I was going to change that for her.

By the time I made it to the store and back to their place with everything, it was a little after ten.

I planned on making dinner for the house to bring in my welcome, so I got started on it.

The menu was mapped out with curry oxtails, rice and peas, fried cabbage, and coco bread.

My father wasn’t as loving, but he taught me his culture and cooking style.

As the day progressed, I found things to do around the house. I told her I wasn’t a maid, but they needed one. As a woman, she did absolutely nothing, and that wasn’t me judging her either. The proof was in the pudding that she didn’t get her hands dirty.

I ended up washing clothes and cleaning the entire house, which took me hours on end. I wasn’t pleased with it, but I felt more comfortable now that I wasn’t standing in filth. Just as I took a seat on the couch, my phone rang with Aviana paying me a check in call.

“Hello.”

“Hi Sorimah. I was seeing how you’re making out. Is everything alright?”

“So far it is. I just finished cleaning and got dinner started. It should be done by the time you return.”

“Oh, that’s good. My family should be home within an hour or two. My sister wasn’t able to pick up Akeera today, so my man is going to. Usually, when he does it, they go on a date and then straight home.”

That was sweet. Maybe I was being judgmental too early on. Whoever he was had time for their daughter when she didn’t. I swear the more she revealed the worse she made herself look in my eyes.

“Alrighty. Does he know that I’ve been hired?” Everything in me said he was clueless.

“Ugh, yeah. Call me back if there’s an issue. I have to finish up here and then I’ll be there right behind them.”

Releasing a deep breath, I said, “Sure. I’ll see you later.”

I hung up and called EJ directly after. Aviana and her man weren’t on the same page, and I wanted no parts of the chaos that lay ahead.

“Yo!”

“He doesn’t know that I was hired, EJ. I’m all up in this man house cooking and shit and he has no knowledge of what’s going on.”

“Why didn’t you look into all of this before you took the job Ri? We don’t do shit like this and now there’s no telling what that man will do. I think you should call her and tell her you can’t accept it and sorry for the inconvenience.”

“The contract is signed, and dinner is halfway done. I couldn’t leave if I wanted to.”

“Damn it Ri.” I could hear the frustration in her voice. “Just wait it out. However he ends up feeling about you, is an argument he’ll have with his woman, not you. If he put you out, leave gracefully and cancel her as a client.”

I heard the front door open, and nervousness sat in. I didn’t know what was about to happen, but I knew I had come aboard trying to help. That was all that mattered. EJ was right about it not being my fight. Whatever he said, I was going to abide by it.

“I think he’s here. Stay on the phone with me.”

All you could hear was the love a little girl had for her father.

Since the front door opened, I heard her say his name at least five times and his responses didn’t hold a single ounce of aggravation.

He called her princess in return, and I smiled off that alone.

When I heard them mention the smell of food, my nervousness went up a notch.

Her little self-came flying around the corner and instantly stopped when her eyes landed on me. She stood at the doorway and waited patiently for her protector. She was a gorgeous little girl too. She mirrored Aviana’s looks to the T.

“’Bout time you cooked din…”

Him.

“This has to be a joke… right?” I questioned in shock. My eyes weren’t playing a trick on me. I’d been fine all day. There was no need for them to fuck up now.

“What Ri? What’s happening? Say something!” EJ yelled in my ear.

“Uhm, let me call you back.”
