Chapter thirty-five

Spawn

Absolute heathen, that one. Her barbaric behavior, while effective, is ruining everything. Our appearance, clothing, the body we have taken over—she's going to cost us greatly and I pray I'm the one who’s allowed to punish her.

What was done to her in the past evidently has not thwarted her berserk state of play. The choice to frolic in filth and eschew a simple douse is abhorrent. Over and over, I shall ask why I befriended such an unpleasant being.

In her brackish ways, she's sullied the girl—much like herself—in and out.

Complete unapologetic putridity.

The girl's body is no longer the flawless thing it was when we entered years ago. It’s damaged beyond repair and on the verge of spoilage.

Every time we return to Earth and play this game—cycle after cycle—the hedonist practically wastes our chance to walk free once more. We overpower a beautiful maiden, revel in the spoils her frame offers, then once we’ve used up every bit of her, she's cast aside to make way for the next devotee.

Finally, we have the chance to roam with how strong Sadie is. Former converts we've come to own never lasted this long. By eighteen years of age, they're falling apart. Rotting from the inside out from famine, disease, and infirmities.

Her resilience is most meritorious. More so when she attends the Medicus to gather poison specifically designed to silence us—admirable but ignorant. She may have found a temporary reprieve, but every time her poison fails, Kate becomes far more aggressive and punishes her.

Though Kate has yet to stop batting the poor thing around, I've not quite had my feel of her. I want to play still—smear her cruor over my youthful skin and lie about her essence.

The animal needs to share her before I lose my patience.

I am but a noble woman, after all, and I want more.

"We'll be young and beautiful forever, sweet thing," I murmur into her ear as her trapped mind screams for a mortal man to save her.

Kate's in control of the body, but I have my fingers threading through her sanity as she watches a stranger's life fade from their eyes. Then, she's on the move once more, stalking the night.

"I...I can't d...do this anymore." The broken words are pitiful.

Too bad.

"You'll survive, girl. It's part of the plan.

You'll be part of us, and will not feel any more pain or sadness," I say uncharacteristically. Compared to my typical brutish nature; I’d rather slit her throat and hang her over my bath.

Instead, I draw her close to my bosom when she falls unbecomingly into hysterics.

One stroke after another, I pet the pathetic thing as snot and tears soil the front of my bodice. Her feeble arms brace around my narrow waist where she trembles with the force of her cries.

Obscene.

"Calm thyself, girl. We only wish to wean you from your poison. The others and I, we have come to release you from the collar and leash that muddy your mind and force you into silence."

Grime works its way off her filthy skin into the priceless fabric of my dress. What a waste of silk. Oil is practically impossible to remove and she's smearing her flesh secretion all over the place. What's next, relieving herself on the carpet like a common scoundrel?

At my limit of rendering comfort, I shove her away with disgust—I can only take so much. Sadie staggers several feet, barely able to catch herself from falling onto her pretty face.

Confusion brings tears to her washed out irises, tears I have no intention of entertaining. And the dejection? Move on. Life’s unfair as it is; she just happened to have drawn the shortest straw of them all. She's lucky she drew one at all.

I loathe her existence but, a tender-hearted thing doesn't need to know all of that. She has enough to hate herself for, such as being the reason she’s alone and why no one wants to come close.

At birth, her parents gifted her to people who cared not for the tramp.

Even as a child she begged for the attention of others—longing to be noticed though never accepted.

Cognizant, I grimace when her hands began their loutish floundering.

I can no longer attend to her under these piteous conditions.

Someone, please, take this miserable being away from me!

The heel of my shoe groans as I spin to march away.

Perhaps if I don't see her or hear her my mood will improve.

"Follow my voice, girl. There is much for you to see, and we are almost there."

"Wh...where are we going?" Her naked feet carry her a short distance behind me, through the dimly lit crevices of her mental prison.

I spoke too soon.

"To a place where you will be shown what you're truly capable of and why you need not worry what happens next."

She sniffles and I roll my eyes. Shall we milk emotions for everything they're worth, or pull on our most impressive undergarments and press on?

Like ladies should, I gather my over-skirt and lift to make way for my shoes. It would be nonsensical to scuff the fabric when the floor transitions from bottomless black to mud and water.

"Can't I just go home? Why did Kate take over? What do you all want with me? You've taken my life away, what more is there to have?"

Sadie pads along behind me, determined to keep up when the soft slaps increase and slow. It amuses me, makes me think of a lost pup.

"I was only asleep, is that wrong of me?"

I scoff over my shoulder.

"Do you not want to be normal, girl? In time you will understand. As of yet, you must follow and trust in me."
