Set a Course

I couldn't help but chuckle at the mental image of this small being trying to touch my crew's work stations. "Alright, alright. You win." I turned to address my crew, who had been watching our exchange with a mix of concern and fascination. "Bring Captain Rodriguez up to speed on our current situation and efforts."

As Grixxa began briefing the human, I found myself reevaluating my opinion of him. Perhaps having an unpredictable element like Rodriguez on our side could work to our advantage. At the very least, his determination to save Nova matched my own, and right now, that counted for a lot.

"Captain," Lyra's melodic voice interrupted my thoughts. "I believe I've identified a pattern in the Crimson Claw's previous raids. There's a high probability they're heading for the Zenobia Nebula."

My hearts leaped. Finally, a lead. "Excellent work, Lyra. What do we know about this nebula?"

As Lyra began outlining the nebula's characteristics – a roiling mass of cosmic gases and newborn stars, notorious for wreaking havoc on sensors and navigation systems – I felt a small spark of hope igniting in my chest.

"It's the perfect place to lay low." Rodriguez scratched at the short, black filaments that grew on his jaw, proving he'd been paying attention to Lyra's briefing. "Lots of places to hide, hard to track someone once they're inside."

I nodded, impressed despite myself. "Exactly. Vex'kar's crew could hole up there for weeks, waiting for any pursuit to die down before moving on to sell..." I couldn't bring myself to finish the sentence.

Rodriguez's head snapped in my direction. "Sell? Sell what?"

I looked down and rubbed at my chest where an uncomfortable tightness grew. "Humans are unknown in this dimension, therefore, uh…" I couldn't bring myself to finish the thought.

"Nova," Jorixx picked up my train of thought without hesitation. "She'd bring a huge price at one of the slave markets. In fact," he added, much to my consternation. "That's what we were supposed to be doing with her when we came across you and the other human. We were supposed to be set for life."

My ridges flared orange and red in shame and anger. When I glanced up at the human captain, his face was red, his lips tight. Before I could explain he shot forward and smashed me in the mouth with one of his small fists. I reared back in surprise, my hand flying to the small cut he had managed to make in my tough hide. The dark purple blood on my fingers was a shock.

Jorixx and Grixxa closed in on the captain in a second but I held up my other hand to stop them. "No, I deserved it. Leave him be," I instructed and they reluctantly stood down, but hovered menacingly over him.

"I am ashamed to admit that this was the plan, at first," I stated. "But the more I got to know Nova, I knew I could not do it. She means more to me than all the credits in the world."

Manny filled his lungs several times before he crossed his arms over his chest and stared me dead in the eye. Searching for something. Finally, his chin dipped once and he spoke again. "Then let's get her back. What can I do?"

I nodded and turned to Jorixx. We would have words about his outburst later but for now, I needed his expertise. My voice was flat and cold, however, when I asked, "What's the status on our engines?"

My engineer's response was hesitant and his three eyes avoiding my hard gaze . "We've made some progress, Captain, but we're still looking at several clicks before we're capable of FTL travel."

My hands fisted in frustration. Every moment we delayed was another moment Nova spent in my enemies' clutches. Another moment for the trail to grow cold.

It was Rodriguez who spoke up, his brow furrowed in thought. "What about that nebula you mentioned? The Zenobia Nebula, right? You said it wreaks havoc on sensors and navigation. Could we use that to our advantage somehow?"

I blinked, taken aback by the human's unexpected suggestion. "It's... possible," I said slowly, my mind racing. "The nebula is treacherous, but if we could navigate it successfully..."

Rodriguez's eyes gleamed with determination. "Sometimes the most dangerous path is the one your enemy least expects. If we can't outrun the Crimson Claw, maybe we can outmaneuver them."

I stroked my chin thoughtfully, my tentacles writhing as I considered the possibilities. "Lyra," I called out. "What's your analysis of the Zenobia Nebula's composition?"

Our navigator's ethereal form pulsed as she accessed the data. "It's a complex mix of ionized gases, stellar remnants, and gravitational anomalies, Captain. Extremely hazardous to navigate, but... there are patterns to the chaos. With precise calculations, we might be able to plot a course through it."

"A course that could cut significant time off our journey," I finished, the beginnings of a plan forming in my mind. It was audacious, potentially catastrophic even. But as I looked around at my loyal crew and the determined face of this human who had no real stake in our mission beyond his own sense of honor, I knew we had to try.

"Alright, people, listen up," I said, my voice ringing with newfound purpose. "Here's what we're going to do. Lyra, I need you to map out the safest possible route through the Zenobia Nebula. We're going to use the nebula's disruptive properties to mask our approach and potentially shave clicks off our pursuit time."

Grixxa's eyes widened. "Captain, the risks involved in such a maneuver are-"

"Immense, I know," I cut her off. "But it's our only shot at reaching Nova before the Claw can disappear with her into deeper space."

Rodriguez clapped his small, five fingered hands together. "High risk, high reward. I like it. What do you need me to do?"

I studied the human for a moment, weighing my options. "Your experience with unpredictable situations could be valuable. I want you working with Lyra on navigational calculations. Your... unique perspective might see possibilities we'd miss."

As my crew sprang into action, I felt a change come over the bridge. The despair that had gripped us all began to lift, replaced by a steely resolve. We faced seemingly impossible odds, but we had something Vex'kar's leftover crew didn't – determination born of loyalty, friendship, and perhaps something even deeper.

"Jorixx," I called out, "what can we do to reinforce our shields against the nebula's effects?"

Our crystalline engineer's voice crackled with thoughtful static. "I might be able to reconfigure our deflector array to create a bubble of stable space around the ship. It won't be perfect, but it should help us weather the worst of the nebula's turbulence."

I nodded approvingly. "Do it. Grixxa, I want you coordinating with Jorixx. If we're going to pull this off, we'll need every system operating at peak efficiency."

As the preparations continued, Lyra and Rodriguez huddled over the navigation console, a storm of calculations and trajectory projections swirling around them.

"We've identified a potential route," Lyra reported, her form pulsing with a mix of excitement and trepidation. "It's incredibly risky, Captain. We'll be skirting the edge of several gravitational anomalies and passing through areas of intense radiation. But if we can thread the needle..."

Rodriguez looked up, a mix of awe and determination on his face. "I've got to say, Tentacles, this is one hell of a crazy plan. But if it works..."

My brow ridges raised at the annoying nickname, but then my lips twitched fighting a grin. "If it works, we'll cut our pursuit time nearly in half," I finished. "And that might be all we need to save Nova."

As the final preparations were made, I allowed myself a moment of quiet reflection. I thought of Nova – her infectious curiosity, her unwavering kindness, the way her presence had slowly but surely changed something fundamental within me.

"Hold on, Nova," I whispered, staring at the swirling, colorful mass of the Zenobia Nebula looming on our viewscreen. "We're coming for you. All of us. And this time, I won't let you down. I promise."

With that silent vow, I turned my attention to the task at hand. "All hands, brace for nebula entry. Lyra, plot our course. Jorixx, divert all available power to shields and navigation. This is going to be one hell of a ride."

I took a deep breath, surveying my crew one last time. Their faces were a mix of grim resolve and fear, but not one of them showed any sign of backing down. Even Rodriguez, so out of his element, stood ready at his station.

"For Nova," I said quietly, then raised my voice. "Grixxa, Let's go!"

As my crew and Rodriguez sprang into action, preparing for the dangerous mission ahead, I allowed myself a moment of quiet reflection. I thought of Nova – her infectious curiosity, her unwavering kindness, the way her presence had slowly but surely changed something fundamental within me.

" Hold on, my little zixxit. " I stared out at the star-strewn void. "I'm coming for you. And this time, I won't let you down. I promise."

For the first time since Nova's capture, I allowed myself to believe that we might just pull this off. And when we did, the entire universe would learn the hard way what happened to those who dared to harm me and mine.

The hunt was on. And may the astral powers have mercy on anyone who stood in my way.
