CHAPTER 20
The Reckoning
POV: Julia ? Logan ? Julia
Julia
The sun hasn’t even cracked the horizon when I pull into the empty parking lot outside the municipal building. I kill the engine and sit in silence, gripping the steering wheel like it’s the only thing tethering me to this world.
I’ve done a lot of waiting these last few days—by phones, in hospital rooms, outside interrogation doors. But this feels different.
This feels final.
Inside that building, Tonya’s contact is planting a recorder in a room where Richard Cane and a man tied to Congressman Jameson are about to meet.
And if things go the way we hope, they’ll hang themselves with their own damn words.
My phone feels like a live wire in my palm.
I check it again. Still nothing.
Then again. Still no message.
My chest tightens. I’ve never felt this kind of ache before—like rage and fear braided together in a tight rope that coils around my ribs.
I want to scream. I want to storm the damn place myself. But I can’t. Not yet.
I force myself to sit on the curb, elbows resting on my knees, and close my eyes.
Logan’s face flashes behind my lids—stone-eyed and unyielding as the agents took him away. His voice, low and steady as he told me to stay calm. Stay with Lily.
Even then, he was protecting me.
Even cuffed. Even bruised. Even betrayed by the system he spent his life upholding.
The memory of him standing tall, surrounded by suits trying to strip him of everything, hits me like a fist.
And the way Lily had cried, clutching my hand, begging for her daddy—
No. I can’t let myself unravel now.
That moment didn’t break him.
It won’t break me either.
If anything, it’s what’s fueling me.
Because this isn’t just about clearing his name.
It’s about giving him back the life they tried to take. Giving our daughter the future she deserves.
Giving us a shot at something real.
My phone buzzes. A text from Tonya.
TONYA: Recorder’s live. They’re talking.
I hold my breath and open the app.
Let the bastards hang themselves.
Static. Then voices.Cane: “The Mac situation was a mess from the start. You should’ve seen Carter’s face when we pulled him in—guy still thinks the badge means something.”
I freeze. That voice. So smug. So sure he’s untouchable.
Until now.
A short laugh from the aide. “He was too close to Thompson. Should’ve cut her loose the second she showed up in Seaside Bluff.”
Cane: “He didn’t. So we did what we had to. I buried the drive Mac used. The one with the shell company link tied to the campaign funds. You’re welcome, by the way.”
My heart slams in my chest.
Aide: “That drive could’ve ended us. Carter finds it, follows the trail to Jameson… and we’re all toast.”
Cane: “He was getting too close. That’s why we moved fast. We turned his silence into complicity. Let the media spin do the rest.”
Aide: “And Thompson?”
Cane: “Collateral damage. No one’s going to believe her if Carter’s credibility goes up in flames. Especially not after that shootout. We frame it right, they both go down.”
My hands are trembling now.
There it is.
Not just lies. Not just corruption.
Proof.
Proof that they sabotaged an entire federal investigation to protect Jameson’s re-election campaign. That they framed Logan. That they would’ve taken me down too—just for being close to him.
I don’t wait.
I forward the full audio file to Frank, attach screenshots, and add one line:
“You asked for a smoking gun? I just handed you the whole damn armory.”
ME: It’s done. We got them.
And for the first time since Logan was taken, I feel like I can breathe.
Logan
They’ve left me in here too long.
No clock on the wall. No window. Just four concrete walls, a metal bench, and the lingering smell of bleach and sweat. Time doesn’t pass in a place like this—it grinds.
My wrists are raw where the cuffs bit in. My shoulder’s stiff from the warehouse injury, flaring every time I shift. There’s a cut on my lip that keeps bleeding just enough to taste copper.
They haven’t touched me physically—nothing they could get caught doing—but they’ve tried everything else. Questions laced with traps. Long silences. The smug looks. The “you’ve disappointed everyone” tone.
But I haven’t said a word. Not one.
They think I’m cracked.
Truth is, I’ve never been clearer.
I lean back against the wall, head tilted up, jaw clenched tight. I’ve faced worse. I’ve survived worse.
War zones. Betrayal. The day Julia left without a word.
The moment I found out Lily was mine and realized I’d missed six years of her life.
But none of it broke me.
And this won’t either.
Because there’s a fire in me now—a purpose I didn’t have before.
Her name is Julia Thompson.
And her laugh, her defiance, her goddamn stubborn light—that’s what’s keeping me upright. That, and the way Lily called me Daddy. Like it was the most natural thing in the world.
I’d crawl through hell before I let anyone take that away from me again.
So yeah, I’m beaten.
I’m bruised.
I’m exhausted.
But I am not done.
And I sure as hell am not broken.
Not now. Not ever.
I’d give anything to see them again.
The door clanks.
Bootsteps.
Frank.
He looks like he just ran through a storm, but he’s grinning. “Get up, Sheriff. You’re going home.”
I blink. “What?”
He tosses a manila folder onto the table. “We got the recording. Cane got sloppy. Julia got it on tape. You should’ve heard her voice when she called me—pure hellfire.
She handed us everything. You’re clear.”
My shoulders slump, the tension uncoiling like a spring that’s been wound too tight for too long.
“Where is he now?” I ask, my voice hoarse.
Frank’s smile fades into something harder. “District office. Tried to stall. But the DA’s got him by the throat. They’re not playing games.”
He doesn’t have to say it, but I already know—Cane’s done.
I follow Frank out, my boots hitting the tile with a heaviness I hadn’t noticed until it started to lift.
My hands drop to my sides. “Julia?”
Frank pulls out his phone, checks something, then looks up at me. “DA just issued a statement. It’s all over the wire. You’re reinstated, Logan. Name cleared. Cane’s being booked right now for tampering, obstruction, conspiracy. All of it.”
I don’t speak. Just stare out toward the road.
Because I don’t need a press release.
I don’t need a headline.
I just need her.
My hands drop to my sides. “Julia?”
And then —like I willed her into existence—Julia’s car turns the corner.
She parks fast and bolts out, eyes already searching. When she sees me, everything slows.
She runs.
I meet her halfway.
She throws her arms around me, and I pull her in like I’ve been drowning without her.
“I told you I wasn’t going to lose you,” she whispers.
I bury my face in her hair. “You never could.”
Julia
When we finally pull apart, I cup his face. “You okay?”
“I am now.”
I swallow hard. “They dropped everything?”
He nods. “Cane’s finished. Jameson’s scrambling. Frank’s with the DA now. It’s over.”
I exhale, sagging against him. “I was so scared.”
He brushes a thumb under my eye. “I know. But you didn’t run.”
“I would’ve burned the whole damn system down for you.”
He smiles, soft and proud. “I know.”
He kisses me again. Slower this time. Deeper. Like a promise.
Three Days Later
Laughter echoes through Carla’s backyard. The grill is sizzling, country music plays low from the speakers, and Lily is chasing bubbles across the lawn.
Logan’s beside me, beer in hand, his other arm wrapped around my waist.
Tonya’s here too with color in her cheeks and a glint in her eyes, laughing at Frank saying, “Well someone has to supervise the sheriff in civilian settings.”
Logan leans down. “She’s really mine, huh?”
I follow his gaze to Lily, who’s now climbing onto a lawn chair with chocolate on her face.
“She’s all yours,” I whisper. “Always was.”
He presses a kiss to my temple. “Thank you for giving her to me.”
“You earned her,” I say softly. “You earned both of us.”
He turns toward me, serious now. “You’re the only thing I’ve ever truly wanted, Julia. You and her. So what do you think about making it official?”
My brow arches. “Official how?”
“Mrs. Carter has a nice ring to it.”
I grin. “That depends. You gonna ask nice?”
He slides a hand into his pocket, pulls out a small velvet box.
My breath hitches.
He opens it slowly.
A simple, elegant ring.
Logan lowers his voice. “Julia Thompson… will you marry me?”
Tears blur my vision.
“Yes,” I whisper. “God, yes.”
He slips the ring on my finger and kisses me again.
Lily runs over. “What’s happening?”
“We’re getting married,” I tell her, scooping her into my arms.
She squeals. “Do I get to wear a dress too?”
Logan laughs, wrapping his arms around both of us. “The fanciest dress, kiddo.”
I rest my head on his shoulder, watching the sun dip low over Seaside Bluff.
It took everything to get here. Blood. Secrets. Pain.
But we survived it all.
Together.
