Chapter 11

The Seven of Cups signifies strife, indecision, and wishful thinking.

DANNY

Idid not agree with Biz’s decision to get a search warrant for Dr. Cassidy’s home. I thought it was premature. I was still working on the Russian mob angle. We had not yet received any DNA reports from the lab.

“Cassidy and Laura are coming to the precinct on Tuesday for questioning. What’s the hurry?”

“Yesterday you said, ‘Wrap it up.’” Biz twirled her finger in the air. “This is me. Wrapping.”

We agreed to meet at Serendipity after the search. Biz and I eat there a couple times every week. The owner’s husband, Jimmy King, was a fellow detective when he was killed in the line of duty several years ago. Marci was struggling to get their little restaurant in Decatur off the ground when Jimmy died. Our entire precinct supports Marci by eating frequently at Serendipity. I eat there more than most. Marci basically feeds me and a few other single detectives every day.

Biz and I had just been served when I saw Marci walk in with Dr. Cassidy and that guy from the lecture yesterday.

It occurs to me that’s why Cassidy seems familiar. She is obviously friends with Marci, and I’ve probably seen her around the restaurant.

Biz claims that when I saw Cassidy walk in, I smiled and blushed. Aside from the fact that I don’t “blush,” I told her she’s nuts.

I was going into the men’s room when Cassidy was coming out of the ladies’ room, and she bumped into me. It was actually kind of funny. A breath mint flew out of her mouth and landed on my shirt. She picked it off and apologized. Innocent enough, in my opinion.

Biz went postal on Cassidy. I was in the men’s room and heard an argument outside. Biz was yelling at someone and when I exited the men’s room, I heard, “Detective, I will have your badge if you ever step out of line with me again” and saw Cassidy stomping off to her table.

I told Biz she was way out of line, and she had the nerve to tell me I was one who had crossed the line.

“Dammit, you know me. I never cross a line with a suspect.”

Even if she makes me sweat.
