Chapter 23

The Two of Cups symbolizes mutual respect and attraction.

DANNY

Dammit. All that ‘impeccable integrity’ my therapist friend says I have just disintegrated.

Dear God, what a kiss.

The spell is broken when Cal pushes me away. “No! One minute you are trying to put me in jail and the next you’re making a move on me.”

I release the embrace and step back, mentally chastising myself. “Dr. Cassidy, I apologize. I don’t know what came over me. That was totally inappropriate.”

Cal is wiping her mouth like she is trying to erase the kiss.

“My life has been in turmoil since Paul’s death. The college put me on leave until the trial is over. People that I’ve known for decades are avoiding me. My reputation is in tatters and my life’s work is destroyed.

“Then I find out a client of mine, who is Paul’s crazy ex-girlfriend, killed him and framed me. I’m trying my damnedest to keep it together and stayed grounded.”

“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to complicate things for you.”

“You ‘complicated’ things for me the day I met you.”

“How did I do that? I am doing my job.”

“You kiss all your murder suspects?”

“I apologized for that. I was out of line.”

“Don’t beat yourself up. You didn’t get your signals crossed.”

What the hell is this woman trying to say?

“Neither of us need this kind of complication or distraction in our personal or our professional lives.”

“I’m not sure I understand your point.”

“My point is, Detective, the attraction is mutual.”

Everything in me is saying, “Leave now.”

“Would you like to come in for a cup a coffee, Detective?”

“I would love to, Doctor. Got any sugar?” So much for listening to the voice of reason.
