Chapter 31
The King of Cups embodies the energy of compassion and empathy.
DANNY
Once a case is solved and a trial date is set, I don’t have anything to do with it until it is time for trial prep by the prosecution. In theory, I should not have the file for the Davis murder still on my desk.
I keep it hidden from Biz in my top desk drawer.
I have to use Eagle Finegan for any investigation and follow up I can’t do. Biz found out I had asked our IT department to put a trace on Juliet Morrison after she was discharged from the psych hospital. She was furious. She created such a ruckus in the squad room that the unit commander pulled me aside and asked what was going on.
“It’s just Biz being Biz, Captain. You know how she gets when she doesn’t get her way. Don’t mention it to her; I’ll smooth it over.”
I hated throwing Biz under the bus, but she was out of line reacting that way. We had never disagreed before now to this extent. There is a growing chasm between us. We stopped eating at Serendipity together or having a drink after shifts.
I still eat at Serendipity every day. Marci is not as friendly as she used to be. I understand. She and Cal have been best friends since childhood.
Today, I worked up the courage to ask her about Cal. I haven’t seen her since that day in May.
Marci pulls up a chair. “I’m worried about her. She’s become a recluse. Have you read some of the stuff about her in the newspaper and online?”
I have. There are some very sick people out there. “Did she tell you about the last time I saw her?”
Marci looks uncomfortable. “Yes.”
“Can I be honest with you, Marci? You’ve known me a long time and I think you know what kind of person I am.”
Marci didn’t say anything.
“This is confidential. I’m working with Eagle to locate Juliet. I have a plan to get Juliet to confess.”
