Chapter 36

The Five of Wands shows up when clashing egos create conflict and disagreement.

DANNY

I’m gathering up my wallet and keys in the bedroom when I hear the front door open.

“What the hell is going on here?”

I know that voice all too well.

Cal is standing in the open doorway.

Biz is on my front porch. She is madder than a nest of hornets.

“Unbelievable,” is all she says.

Cal starts to speak but I touch her arm. “I don’t mean to pull rank but let me handle this.”

“Biz, I am taking Cal home. I’ll meet you at the precinct in 30 minutes.”

Biz stomps off my porch, slams her car door, and slings gravel as she speeds out of my driveway.

On the drive to her house, Cal asks, “How bad is it?”

“If she reports me, it’s over. I’ll be fired. I’m hoping she will listen to reason and not interfere.”

Cal reaches over the console, placing her hand on my leg. “Maybe this isn’t the right time for us, or maybe it’s just not right.”

I pull off the road and into the first parking lot I see. I put the car in park and face Cal. “This is worth the risk. If I lose everything in my life, but still have you, then I’ve lost nothing.”

My words bring tears to her eyes. “It took me a long time to find you. I’m not letting you go.”

For the rest of the ride, we were silent.

I’ve been married twice and only now, with Cal, do I understand what love really means.
