Chapter 41
The King of Swords is disciplined, using logic in matters of the heart.
DANNY
Screw this. The whole damn world is mad at me. Biz. Cal. Charlotte. I’m sure Marci will be as well once she gets the scoop from Cal.
Laura stopped by the precinct and asked me to grab lunch with her. She looked at me askance when I said, “Anywhere but Serendipity” but didn’t ask questions.
“Eagle said she’s located Juliet. Are you going to bring her in for questioning?”
“You know Biz is giving me a hard time about this, right?”
Laura pursed her lips. “Since when has a little opposition stopped you from doing what is right?”
“It’s more than a little opposition. There are complications.”
Laura raised her eyebrows. “Anything I should know about that pertains to my client?” She waited. I was trying to figure out what to say.
“Danny, tell me you didn’t.”
“Didn’t what?”
“Tell me you did not get romantically involved with my client. I saw the sparks fly between the two of you, but I figured you both had enough sense not to pursue it.”
She slams her fist on the table when I don’t answer. “What have you done? You know I can take this to Judge Carson and get the indictment nullified. Chain of evidence, tainted evidence, the whole nine yards. You’ll be ruined.”
I can tell she wants to punch me. “Are you going to say anything or just sit there looking like an idiot who is about to be involved in the biggest scandal to hit the Atlanta Police force in years?”
“I admit it. I screwed up.” It was harder to admit this to myself than to her.
“Yes. And you screwed my client, too. In more ways than one.”
She’s shaking her head and mumbling to herself. “I cannot believe this. How could you be so stupid?”
“Stop.” I grab hold of her shoulders. “Stop. Please.” I cannot deal with one more hysterical woman today.
“I am going to find Juliet. I will get her to confess. Cal will be exonerated.”
“And you and your girlfriend will ride off into the sunset together?”
“Not exactly. She ended it.”
“Why?”
“I told her about Charlotte.”
“She hasn’t signed the papers? You’re still married?”
“Yes.”
“Your life is a mess, Daniel.”
“You have no idea.”
