On the drive home I called Laura. She does not have any updates for me. “Be honest with me. What kind of chance do you have of winning this trial?”
“We’re going to do our best. Hang in there.”
That’s your best? Your best does not keep me out of jail.
We have the radio tuned to a news traffic channel as we sit at a dead stop on I-285. I make a mental note to research small towns without major interstates. I hate traffic. Maybe somewhere out west with wide open spaces like Wyoming. Or would New York City be a better place to disappear? I could hide in the midst of eight million people.
“Breaking News in the murder of Paul Davis in five minutes after Drive Time Traffic Report.”
Marci reaches to turn off the radio. I stop her. “I want to hear this.” The wait is interminable. All of a sudden, I don’t care about the traffic. Just give me the news.
“Shocking news today as another suspect has been identified in the murder of Real Estate Developer Paul Davis. Police sources confirm DNA found at the scene matches a former lover of Davis’s. The trial of Peachtree College psychology professor and author Caroline Cassidy was scheduled to begin September 5. Stay tuned as we bring you more updates.”
I burst into tears.
