Chapter 56
The Eight of Wands suggests new people or new opportunities are coming into your life.
CAL
Danny knocked on my door an hour later carrying a takeout box from Serendipity. “Peace offering. Sorry about all that.”
“That was quite entertaining. The best part of that whole scenario was watching you squirm between your first wife, your second wife, and me.
“When I look at Laura, who is beautiful and polished and elegant, and I look at Charlotte who… defies words. All I can think about is, if you fell in love with those two women, what do you possibly see in me? We three women are about as opposite as a pole cat, a gazelle, and a…”
“Circus monkey?”
“Exactly.”
“Did my marriages to the gazelle and to the monkey last?”
I shake my head.
“Do you want to know why?”
“Yes.”
“This is a horrible thing to admit, and I am not proud of it, but when I married both of those women, I was marrying what they could do for me. They are both from wealthy families.” He holds up his hand. “I know—I was a terrible human being. But I will never lie to you, Cal, and that’s the truth. And it took a hell of a lot of therapy for me to admit that about myself.
“I loved their status and their money more than I loved them. Obviously neither Laura nor I realized she was gay when we married. We divorced less than a year later.
“After Charlotte left and I read your book, everything came into focus. I learned to forgive myself, love myself, and hopefully, now I can love you the way you deserve to be loved.”
I take off my tee shirt. “I’m ready to be loved the way I deserve to be loved, mister. Gimme some sugar.”
The months we spent apart made us hungrier than ever for each other. We knew each other’s bodies well: where to kiss, where to stroke. It was late afternoon when we finally surfaced after the last round of lovemaking.
“I’m curious. Why is Charlotte acquiescing to the divorce now?”
Danny smiled. “I enlisted Laura’s help. They’ve always been friendly. I didn’t get all the details, but I think it has something to do with Laura introducing Charlotte to Senator Markham, whose wife just filed for divorce.”
