THE ARBOR WAS WOUND through with Indian blanket and Texas paintbrush, and I'd been standing at the center of it long enough to have a considered opinion about the wedding-band situation.

The fiddle player had an issue. She'd been working through it for the last twenty minutes, running the same scale, stopping, running it again.

When a thing doesn't sound right, you work it until it does. I had some sympathy.

The ceremony meadow was full. Every chair.

The Hightower family on the right in their hats and their suits, Big Jim in the front row, a man who'd been ready to sign off on this for three years and was quietly satisfied to have arrived at it.

Everyone assembled in a Texas meadow on an early May Saturday afternoon, waiting for a bride.

Jules was at the far edge of the meadow, camera up, moving the way she moved when she'd spotted something: a particular stillness first, and then she'd adjust and the shutter would go.

I'd been tracking that pattern for the better part of two days.

I'd been tracking her specifically for about the last twenty minutes before the question of the pattern had even come up.

I wasn't going to look again.

I looked again.

The band worked through whatever it had been working through and landed somewhere it seemed satisfied with. The tempo shifted, slower, more intention in it, and the meadow went quiet the way it does when a crowd holds its breath.

Three bridesmaids first, each one in a shade of dusty rose that had probably taken six months to agree on.

The flower girl, who made her case seriously and at her own pace.

Then Cooper Ralls with the ring box held in both hands with the focused gravity of a man presenting evidence in a capital case.

He was six years old and he'd decided this mattered, and you could see it in every step.

The crowd made the sound crowds make at six-year-olds who are giving it everything.

I kept my eyes on the aisle.

Jules had moved from the far edge of the meadow to somewhere along the tree line. I clocked this without turning my head, and then I went back to watching Cooper, because Cooper had earned it and there were several hundred people watching the arbor.

The sound was hooves.

Not from the aisle. From the east side of the property—and then from the west simultaneously—and the crowd took a full second to make sense of this, which was the exact second Bobbie-Jean Hightower came around the live-oak tree line on Guinevere.

Her dappled grey mare, a wildflower garland woven through the bridle, moving at an easy collected walk with the calm of a horse who had done this a hundred times, which she hadn't, but she carried it like she had.

Stoney came in from the west on Lancelot—white gelding, white shirt—with the grin he got when a thing had gone exactly right, and they arrived at the arbor from opposite directions on exactly the same beat, and not a soul in the meadow had seen it coming.

Behind Bobbie-Jean, a string of nieces and nephews on show ponies filed in, glittering.

From somewhere off the east fence, Judge Judy offered her assessment: ''About damn time.''

The crowd went up. Complete and sustained, the kind of noise that has given up on decorum and become genuine.

I started laughing before I'd made any decision about it—out of my chest, real, because it was the most Bobbie-Jean thing that had ever happened and I'd been at this woman's Christmas parties for fifteen years and I should have seen it coming and I hadn't.

Across the meadow, Jules was moving—not toward the entrance, but ahead of it, working the angle where the arbor would frame both horses when they arrived. She'd read the shot from the far edge and was already in position. She wasn't posing it. She was getting it, and getting it clean.

There she is, I thought.

At the meadow's near edge, Brisket materialized with his ears at half-mast, regarding all of it with the flat expression of someone reserving judgment.

I took my hat off and held it at my side.

Stoney came to the arbor and I gave him his ring, which was my primary job and I'd been ready for it.

The officiant said the words, and Bobbie-Jean and Stoney said the words back, and the horses stood while the ranch hands held their bridles, and the meadow went quiet in the genuine way that means everyone has decided to pay attention.

I caught Jules in my peripheral vision three times during the vows.

Not looking for her—just tracking, the way you do when something is at the edge of your field and you don't look away from what's in front of you.

First time she was moving along the far row, camera up.

Second time she'd found the angle where the arbor framed the couple and she was in it, steady.

Third time she'd stopped moving. The camera was down. She was watching the vows.

Not working. Just watching.

I put my attention back on Stoney.

The kiss got a sound out of the crowd that had years of relief in it. Stoney was a man who'd been working toward something for a long time and had arrived without ceremony at the thing itself, which was exactly what had happened.

I put my hat back on and stepped off the arbor.

THE COCKTAIL HOUR HAD set up along the near side of the reception tent: three bars, Smokestack Earl's team running a grazing table that had drawn a crowd before the ceremony had even cleared, string lights overhead that weren't lit yet but would be when the sun got lower.

I found a longneck and spent some time with Big Jim, who was in a good mood in the quiet way of a man who doesn't need confirmation from anyone around him to have one.

Jules was at the edge of the dance floor with her camera bag open on a chair beside her, switching out a lens.

I'd been aware of this for approximately forty-five seconds before I crossed the floor.

I stopped close enough to reach her. Not touching. Just close.

Her hands were working the lens mount—she had it half-seated, and then they stalled. Just for a moment. Color broke across her cheekbones before she'd made any decision about it.

She finished seating the lens. Didn't raise her eyes right away.

"You got the entrance," I said.

"I got the entrance." She zipped the camera bag. "I also got Judge Judy, off-camera, which is probably my favorite frame of the weekend."

"She has a gift for context."

"She doesn't know she's not the photographer.

" Jules raised her eyes to me. The flush had settled at her cheekbones and she'd decided not to do anything about it, which meant she'd decided I was going to see it.

I already was. "She's appeared in four frames today and she's not technically in any of them. "

"That's Judge Judy's whole career," I said. "Technically not in it. Completely in charge."

Jules laughed, and I stood there with a warm longneck in my hand not minding any of it.

THE RECEPTION DINNER was plated ribeye, roasted potatoes, asparagus, and a wedding cake engineered by someone with serious and specific opinions about buttercream. The champagne went around. The room was loud in the comfortable way of people who've been outside all day and are now fed and seated.

I'd written the speech two weeks ago and trimmed it three times. Stoney introduced me and I stood up, took my hat off, and gave it.

Two minutes. Maybe two and a half. I told the room about Stoney driving four hours in a sleet storm to pull my truck out of a ditch without being asked, and about the first time he'd mentioned Bobbie-Jean—four years ago, after a cutting horse trial outside Amarillo—and how the way he'd said her name had been enough to tell me the whole story.

I told them I'd never seen him be wrong about a horse, and he wasn't wrong about this one either.

The room laughed at the horse line, which was the right place to laugh.

I sat down.

Jules was at the edge of the tent to my left, camera at her side.

She'd had it up at some point in the last two minutes, I hadn't watched her raise it, only lower it, and she had her eyes on me now.

Not through the lens. Just watching, with the direct, clear attention she gave to things she'd decided to see properly.

I knew what it meant that she'd pointed her camera at me.

THE CAKE CUTTING WENT smoothly for approximately thirty seconds.

Then Princess FiFi, positioned at Bobbie-Jean's feet in a flower crown that matched the bridal bouquet, made a decision about the cake table that was swift, singular, and catastrophic in the specific way only possible when a hundred-and-fifty-pound Great Dane has a clear sight line and no one moving to stop her.

The sequence was: a lunge, a tablecloth, the second tier of the wedding cake, and a sound that could only be described as a community event.

FiFi sat in the resulting situation and surveyed the room with the expression of a dog who had accomplished what she'd set out to do and had no further remarks.

The room went silent.

From somewhere near the dance floor, without preamble: "She ain't the only one, bless her heart." MeeMaw. Full carrying volume. Not addressing anyone in particular.

The room decided this was exactly correct and went up.

I was watching Jules when it landed.

She laughed. Not the managed version—not the warm client-voice she'd been running all weekend—but the one that arrived before she'd gotten a hand on it.

Her face went completely open, the way it had over the Persian-cat story at the rehearsal dinner, and the dimples came in without asking, and she was laughing in front of a tent full of people she'd just met without doing a single thing about it.

I put my hand flat on the table.

I was done waiting. I wanted her, right now, and I'd been patient long enough.

She caught me looking.
